Hi, I am a veterinarian with 30 years of experience. I have owned my own multi-doctor practice and with the help of my business partner and team brought the practice to AAHA accreditation and Feline Friendly Certification. All this to say, that I have seen it and feel your pain. This is the first video of yours I watched. I don't know why I did today, but I'm glad I did. Your anger, sadness, frustration and feelings about being misunderstood are palpable. Is it any wonder that top level veterinarians who give it all, develop burn out, depression or worse, consider suicide. You take care of you. My dad use to say that there is a certain percentage of the population that is crazy. They are crazy at the doctors, they are crazy at the grocery store and they are crazy to their friends. You can't change crazy, but you can find ways to diminish their impact. I wish you only the best. Be well, stay well, and thank you for taking care of our cancer patients.

I have to say that the vets that are burned out are a problem in the industry, because they cause poor impressions with clients because of their maladaptive behavior. Theirs a time to say I've done my best, but for what ever reason I'm not cut out for this and quit practicing veterinarian medicine.

Thank you for all your work. I could tell you stories on all sides. There are unruly pet parents. There are also inconsiderate, incompetent vets. It's a struggle on both sides.
Dr. Sue is referring to personal attacks on her online. It's a perceptual matter.
Back to the accreditation you helped bring about, thank you very kindly. We need more like you. 🐾🏆

@@DrSueCancerVet I agree with Judith (must be something about the name!). You shouldn't have to change who you are to protect yourself from the faults and flaws of others. Stay engaged, stay passionate & get your 'comment assistant' to delete the rubbish so you won't get triggered by the negativity and can continue to interact with all the genuine people who do appreciate what you do. You could also add a disclaimer to your videos explaining that hateful comments will be deleted and commenters will be blocked so you've given fair warning (not that you should have to do that!)

Also goes into the other direction. If someone writes such a hateful comment, they probably had a pretty bad experience with euthanisation. I'd rather be sad for their grief than to feel insulted. And I also can see how chitchat before such an important topic can make people going through such a phase very upset. When they go low, you go high. Be strong in your truth, which social media audience may or may not be aware of. It does not matter, it does not change your truth, or diminish you.,It is so easy for folks to become fanatic, it seems like the lack of repercussions to a hateful, injuring post or comment fosters more emotional garbage coming out of those folks. If you need to rest, please do so. Care for yourself, allow yourself to breath for a bit, notice the beauty that is all around us. I have only just discovered you in the past 2 days. I really appreciate what you do. I have a 13 yr old dog who had a ping pong ball sized MCT pop up on his neck literally overnight. I see that you have a couple of videos on this type of tumor, and believe me I'm about to check them out. Thank you for being such a precious resource. You are one of the rare few who are both a human whisperer AND an animal whisperer.

I am in tears, literally. I thank God that you have taken time out of your busy schedule to share your knowledge with all of us. I started watching your videos trying to figure out what was going on with one of our cats. Our local vet and the vets at the University of Florida vet clinic were of no help in diagnosing his problem. We spent a lot of money from March through September and never got a diagnosis. We finally had our sweet boy euthanized since he was emaciated and going downhill. I suspect he had a GI lymphoma. I just wish I started watching your videos much sooner because he would have been able to be treated in time had he been properly diagnosed. Thank you so very much for teaching me about lymphomas and treatments.

What you do is an amazing help to pet parents (like me) with dogs with cancer. Please don’t let anyone change that... we cannot control others but we can control how they affect us. I found your channel the day after my dog was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and you brought peace to my heart and mind during a time I wasn’t able to talk to his oncologist yet (he needed amputation first and of course , covid). Your smile and demeanor made me less scared and I am SO THANKFUL for you doing what you do. I purchased the book you co- wrote and binge watched all of your videos on osteosarcoma. I follow you on every social media outlet and just love seeing your updates - especially right now when I can’t go into the office with my dog getting his treatments, it gives me a glimpse into what it’s like and again.. peace of mind. I commented on your Facebook the first weekend I found you, and I got a reply .. I was so amazed, I told everyone LOL, It felt so nice to have a connection to you as a “real person” - so THANK YOU for being you. Dr. Ettinger, as a fellow veterinarian (general practice) and mom (!), I hold you in such high esteem that it breaks my heart to see you as a target for this hateful negativity. I know how hard it is to produce good, reliable, up to date information for the general pet owning public and your videos are of the highest quality. I saw your lectures at the Fetch online conference in August and you have a wonderful presence and its easy to see how much you care about oncology and teaching!!
We deal with many, many negative comments as well in the general practice setting and they can be so disheartening. I can't figure out why veterinarians have become such targets in recent years for hateful online rants when we are work long hours, go to rigorous schooling and extend ourselves emotionally to our clients. I want to let you know that you are a bright, bright light in this muck and mire that has become "social media". I don't blame you one bit for taking a break - there is only so much verbal/online abuse you can absorb. Take care of yourself, the veterinary community (and sick pets) needs you!

My dog has just been diagnosed with a mast cell tumour (here in UK) and the internet was useful for information, but it was too technical for me. When I found your vlog on UA-cam I was so pleased because you explained it clearly and your ‘upbeat’ presentation was great because I’ve cried enough and didn’t need a somber lecture. So, thank you. PS....
    Hi again Dr. Sue,
Having been watching videos re: late stage cancer in dogs and how to treat/support them with diet, supplements etc. I came across a video where a 30-something man's female pitbull survived late-stage cancer 3 yrs beyond the time her doctor predicted - and he was singing the praises of "The Dog Cancer Survival Guide." He mentioned Dr. Demian Dressler (but not your name). I had watched a handful of your VLOGs when I came across his video recommending the book, so I bought the Kindle version last night and began reading it. That's when l learned that YOU and Dr. Dressler co-authored it! (Maybe there are NO coincidences! When the student is ready, etc etc.) WHAT A GREAT BOOK and a much needed resource... and I'm only on Ch. 4!
My dog, KoKo, is an 11 yr old yellow lab/husky mix who I adopted when she was 8 yrs old. She just went through months of blood work to discover that the crystals in her urine were the result of her body making too much calcium, likely due to a growth on a parathyroid gland. Ultimately, she had an ethanol ablation (performed at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, East Greenwich, RI) to cure her of her hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia, muscle wasting, increased metabolism, etc. Thankfully, the procedure was successful as evidenced by 5+ weeks of follow-up ionized calcium blood work within normal range. We were relieved feeling she was FINALLY on the mend.
Around the time of her procedure, KoKo developed a cough. Late at night she'd wake, sit up and pant, cough and walk around. I thought it was kennel cough, having been in and out of the vet's office 1x/week for almost 2 mos. A chest x-ray revealed that KoKo has a 186.6 mm (7.25 inches) tumor in her left lung and a 2 inch tumor in the right lung. Needless to say, we were devastated. (It was not explained to me that the "malignancy panel" that was run initially, was not for cancer, per se, only that it came back negative...so this news was a shock.) Since only 1% of dogs develop primary lung cancer, my guess is that she has some other form of cancer that spread to her lungs. She has several lumps and bumps that my vet (in another state, before moving to RI in 2021) insisted were benign fatty growths. Since reading your book, I realize that ALL of them should have been aspirated or we'd not likely be here. One growth is at the top of her left foot. We don't know what kind of cancer she has....sounds like it could be osteosarcoma or mast cell...no idea, but at this juncture we're going to spend on diet and supplements vs. discovering what's killing her. (Our primary vet and also the specialist didn't recommend radiation or chemo - she's too far along and they thought such treatments would do more harm than good).
I just got back from Whole Foods, shopping for my KoKo's NEW home-cooked diet ingredients...plus Krill and calcium citrate. G-d bless you and Dr. Dressler for putting it out into the world to help folks like me and my sweet, sassy, beloved KoKo, who were sent home with "cough tabs" and a "days to weeks," death sentence. We hope (and pray) to prove them wrong...but we're also employing the law of action!
Since her diagnosis I have her on B17, B15, (thanks to the book "World Without Cancer," by Griffin - a must read, especially for physicians, in my humble opinion as a Dr's daughter) Fenbenizole, Krill, Curcumin, doggie multi-vitamin and JUST learned from your book that the home-cooked diet she's been on (since I adopted her a 8 yrs old) needs to be modified. Since being on the B17, interestingly, she's instinctively avoiding the potato, peas and carrots. I plan to add cbd/thc tincture to the mix. We're "throwing the holistic kitchen sink" at her cancer, hoping it will prolong her life and comfort. The nights are bad - coughing and panting spells....but her days are GOOD...she's eating and walking and happy - though lower energy than usual. We want to make her nights more comfortable but the only thing prescribed by Dr. Block is on backorder EVERYWHERE (hydrocodone bitartrate extended release 10 mg) so I've been giving her 2.5 ccs of Delsym DM before bed.
I grew up in Westchester (Scarsdale) and learned in the book that you practice in Yonkers. I was born there (Cross County Hospital - no longer there, it was in the Cross County Shopping Center). I also learned that out of 50,000+ veterinarians in the US, there are only approximately 50 (FIFTY) board certified pet oncologists and YOU are one of the rare few! Not only that, but you're recognized nationwide (including Hawaii) as an invaluable and highly respected resource for general practice vets. It blows my mind that someone would put you down in that way....but remember, no one in their RIGHT MIND would do so. When a truly empathetic person is on the receiving end of that kind of behavior, it hits us at a level we can't control - and they (the disordered) know it. They target empaths. (I have an MA in psychology and am an author myself, on the topic of genetic genealogy, specifically finding birth family members with DNA testing, called "Living In The Know," totally unrelated topic).
My dad is a retired pediatrician (now 90) who practiced in Ardsley for over 40 yrs. He went to Bronx Science HS with Dr. Stanley Weissman, a dear friend of our family who ran Mamaroneck Animal Hospital on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck and also had a location in Washington Heights. Maybe you knew/heard of him? He passed several years ago. He had a heart of gold and a true love of animals, as you do. Anyway, I thought I'd reach out again as we seem to have some things in common and I'd love to be able to consult with your about my KoKo's care. You're a 2 hr car ride down I-95 from us - an easy trip. Please forgive the length of this message and I'm not offended if you delete it for that reason. I tried to find a contact form etc on your website to no avail. Thanks again for all you do! Wishing you and your family a sweet New Year. Kind regards, Gerri Berger (gerriberger@yahoo.com)

You are a rock star! Please don’t quit. Your euthanasia video helped me after I had to put my sweet 2 1/2 year Izzy with stage 5 lymphoma to rest. Her chemo wasn’t working any longer. I only wish I had found your blog sooner but that episode helped me cope with my decision. Thank you for what you do. There will always be haters but there are people that need you.

I am do thankful you kept going.
I never thought anyone would give free support and much less within hours.
I am trying to help my senior Rottweiler, my best friend, who is sick and has been “diagnosed “ with Cancer yet with no proof besides opinion. No option was provided besides “use this (prednisone) for the rest of his days.” I am trying not to fall apart. I was not given the information for an oncologist to actually diagnose. I was in shock , forgot to ask for an X-ray to eliminate the possibility of this being the 8 wire wraps that have been in his leg since he was 1 year old… or the pieces of bone the surgeon could not find that are still in him.
I could only wish to speak to someone as caring and knowledgeable as you.
    You are appreciated.

Dear Dr Sue, I have been to one of your inspiring lectures at WSAVA Congress in Copenhagen 2017 and have subscribed to your channel since. You make sense, you help us vetererinarians help our patients, globally. I heard everything you said on this video, and I get it. You have my full support. Our job is rewarding, but there is just so much negativity we have to balance out. Hang in there and take care of yourself as well as your family and loved ones!

Hi! DVM here: I just saw this video after forwarding the feline GI lymphoma link to family (my kitty "nephew" has it). I'm also snuggling my own 7.5 y.o. dog who has prostate cancer (just finished a month of radiation therapy & 1 week out from his first dose of Mitoxantrone at UW-Madison). I was lucky enough to train with Drs. MacEwen & Vail in my 4th year. Thanks to their collaborative OSA research, we even had "oncoloptimist" Dr. Withrow visit to lecture our class. I can see why you'd want to put information out there to demystify "the big C" & remind people they have options!
I began to follow you after you spoke at a Chicago VMA lecture a couple of years back. I have sent your videos to countless clients to help them understand the ins/outs of pet cancer. There's nothing else like them online & they're a great resource to both pet owners AND their vets. Thanks for the content. It's hard to battle all the misinformation out there: we are greatly outnumbered. Just wanted to send a message to express my appreciation. See ya on Facebook, Dr Sue! ☺️🐾♥️

Thank you for all you do!!!! Haters will hate and you can't fix stupid. I know it's hard to ignore the negative comments but please don't let them get to you. Your information and experience is far to valuable to not share with others. Blow off some steam now and then, maybe even point out a few of the haters but p*$$ on them! WE love you and we're here for you! Love you bunches!!! Keep up the great work!!!! ❤❤❤

I'm so sorry the haters have gotten to you Dr. Sue. Your videos were the first I watched. They are so helpful. Perhaps there are a couple of staff members or friends who could pre-screen comments for you? You're emotionally invested and the trolls and haters know it. Remember that. Protect yourself and don't allow those buttons to be pushed. If you don't have help with screening comments you may have yo give up viewing them and note in the video that responses to comments is mo longer available. There are nasty people out there full of ill will. They will attack anyon. Thank you for providing information I have been able to rely on.

Keep rocking your Vlogs Dr Sue. There are a ton of GP family veterinarians that have subscribed to your channel and well, and use them to help their clients too. Never take those “haters” personally!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all you and your colleagues do. I've recently learned just how much pets, particularly cats, are getting clobbered by the carcinogens resulting from nicotine-smokers, nicotine-vape-inhalers (secondhand smoke, thirdhand smoke). The word is getting out, and you and others are to be commended for your work.

Dr. Sue please don't stop making videos! The information you provide has helped me and my four time cancer survivor (almost 14 year old golden girl) get through a brain tumor, oral melanoma, liver cancer and now cutaneous lymphoma. Having this resource helped me prepare for my specialist appointments and know what to expect on this journey. I appreciate you. Thank you!
