I was an Aviation Electrician in VF-33. Snort was our commander. I was onboard for his famous fly by on the USS America and on the flight deck.

Going to airshows in the 90s was always fun, but it was even better when Dale Snodgrass was flying the F-14. Thank you Dale for providing patriotic good times for all us airshow lovers.

I'm a proud United States Navy veteran, an electrician who worked in the Flight Deck Lighting/Conveyors and Elevators shop. Snort was the... XO? CO? Anyway, top brass of his squadron, so he always got to fly the "show plane" that had the pretty paint job against the enemy, as well as flight demos. He was also just a good dude, and I was proud to have served under his expert command. Fair winds and following seas, Snort. We loved ya.

Holy cow! These Combustion Guys are the FIRST to realize and recognize that there IS/WAS a living person that personified the fictional "Maverick" of peerless Top Gun fame that walked and talked and flew Tomcats and aircraft "tops", walked and talked among us for a while and that was Captain Dale "Snort" Snodgrass. Further, this force/freak of nature told us all about how he did and does it and almost all of that was flying by the book NATOPS AND creatively/instinctually so much so that a corresponding higher consciousness and lifestyle emerges by necessity that is, I believe now, to be humanity at it's finest, rare for no other reason than extraordinary personal will to fly Navy the best and expand his capabilities beyond even imagination BECAUSE he was devoted to it, who wouldn't be, if they could? It is a matchless honor and privilege to live when he lived and see and hear for myself THE "Top Gun", USN. Thank you, Dale, for everything you did, are and stood for, . . .

I'm not sure but I think Capt. Snodgrass performed an F-14 demo at the Reno Air Races.
Yes it was 2000 he flew around the unlimited course and didn't cut a pylon
Was an honor serving under him in VF-33 Starfighters.

I never have read if it has been determined what locked his controls. Did he do it or did some loose gear get tangled in the stick? He lived a good life and any man would not mind going out as a legend. America still has the best.
