I remember him stopping by Nas Jax . He spoke to the young pilots and sailor's. He made a statement that I will never forget. " I miss flying my Tomcat with afterburners into the sky, " Too see the Face of God"!
I served with then Lt Commander Snodgrass ("Snort") during this time (mid 80's) in VF-143, Pukin' Dogs. Good Memories with all of the Dogs. So long ago.... RIP Captain!
He was my boss in VF-143, The World Famous Pukin' Dogs. He was the QAO when I ran QA. This is when he was selected as Fighter Pilot of the Year. He was a great person to work for and arguably the best F-14 Driver ever. Gone way too soon! RIP Captain!
Best of the best. Him and F-14 Tomcat together were pure magic. It was an otherworldly experience watching him with a Tomcat. 9 - 10 G radius turns in full afterburner at 45 degree/second whipping the nose around with a big cloud of vapes, was his signature move. R.I.P Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass.
It's true that, you don't know what you don't know. I'm know that I saw him fly several times back then. But I didn't know, at the time, who he was and what a privilege it was to see him fly.
I had the privilege to meet Snort on a few occasions. He was kind and a true professional. No one flew the Tomcat like he did! I was honored to do a tribute chat about Snort with another F-14 pilot who I greatly admire... you can find it on my channel. RIP Snort.
I saw him perform many times but my favorites where at the "high on Kalamazoo" air show where he always put on a great show. A highlight was always the flight of the Grumman "cats". A great aviator RIP.
I saw him put the F14 in a tail stand and sit almost motionless for a second in the middle of the runway at Pratt & Whitney. Fuel and vapors were spewing on the ground. We could feel the thrust on our faces. He continued vertical into a cloudless blue sky until we couldn’t see him anymore. I never knew if it was something wrong that he recovered from, or if it was all intentional. But he was dam impressive to say the least, and I remembered his name from that day. Years later when I opened the page of Air & Space showing him coming around the carrier with wing tip below deck, the hair on the back of my neck rose again and I knew it was him.
I served under snort in vf-33 as an aviation electrician. I got into the squadron just after they changed into the Starfighters. Sometimes his aircraft came back with missing panels and calfax screws because he stressed it so much pulling g’s.
Not picking on anyone but the interview questions by the TV reporter in this segment showed a pathetic level of preparation. Dale answered the questions in a professional manner though.
Racist and/or misogynist heard from. There are female aerobatic pilots who could have easily bested Snort in competition. There were many female fighter aces in the Soviet Air Force in WWII. The Black pilots of the Tuskegee Airmen were as good as any privileged white squadron. It is all about opportunity. Now go back to Fox News.
Just yesterday I watched a video that went over the NTSB final report on Snort's fatal accident, with the cause being his failure to disengage the flight control lock before takeoff. Just goes to show that even the greatest pilots can make a simple but fatal mistake if they lose their focus and get into a hurry.
RIP Captain. Don’t drink the O’club in the sky dry sir, some of your shipmates yet to depart would like to throw some back with you after we get the “Charlie” call!!!! Flight suits only!!!
I know what you mean but you also have to look at it from his perspective, there was nothing more in his life that he enjoyed more than flying. It's better than withering away from some disease/illness... He left us doing something he loved. RIP "Snort" 🇺🇸 Fly good don't suck!
What? The F-15 is not a carrier aircraft, it is flown by the US Air Force. The Tomcat was notoriously difficult to fly. Do you have any idea wtf you're talking about?

"my personal experience is that that there is not too many pilots around that are better than US Navy Pilots" - well stated. RIP Snort...

One of the best to have ever flown… legendary…
Rest easy Brother… we have the watch
A true gentleman, and a top knotch Navy "aviator", yes we call the aviators. RIP Snort.

Thanks for sharing.

that flying portion of the news story was at the Pratt and Whitney airport in East Hartford CT. I was there and watched it...was amazing
Yes it was

When reporters actually let the people being interviewed answer the questions...
He cut him off 5 times.
RIP Captain.
Rest in peace Captain Snodgrass
What great footage thanks

Not picking on anyone, but if you win a trophy, you need to show it.
Fair winds and following sea's skipper.
Legendary pilot Legendary plane both from Long Island New York and don't you forget it.
We miss Dale. I wonder what he would say today about quota pilots ??

Blue Skies Captain. No better F-14 pilot then Snort.
good stuff. nice that he talks about the work required.
Thank you for your service Snodgrass🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The TV man said thank you for protecting the country. 15 years before Northwoods -2.
Sierra Hotel Fighter guy. Kazoo 1987!!
RIP Snort. Best to ever do it.

All aboard.
The GOAT !
Ironic that his accident was a simple overlook of the control lock.
Doesn't matter how simple the mistake when it comes to crunch time
You keep throwing the dice your going to get snake eyes eventually.
Scott Cossfield, famous aviator and test pilot, died in a Cessna.
best of the best
iceman was better. He won the trophy.
@@maxsmith695 how dare u
Sporting the Pukin Dogs !!
RIP
Rushed a pre-flight and did remove the control lock and he paid for it dearly Rest in Peace.
didn't*
A lesson for all of us that even THE BEST are not immune.
The F-14 was an extension of this superior aviator , Rest east sir !
Legend!
Fly Navy ❤
Seems so pointless how he was lost..
He taught us all a lesson.

Collared shirts with blue flight suits.
Those were the days.
Undoubtedly a great pilot but a fairly major slip up to not check full and free movement of controls before take off
Preflight is important
Oh yeah, pre flight
Hi, Bob.
"Know your own limitations". I thought I'd thoght of everything.
And then he stupidly hurries to take off in a private plane and leaves a gust lock on, kills himself. After all that.
seems like some boyish character traits
Absolutely nothing wrong with that
What a terrible anchor.
He won the big trophy and did not bring it to show the audience.
Snort ... lol.
Good pilot don't kill themself
The F-14 as the easiest fighter jet to fly in the Navy. The biggest blunder the Navy made was replacing it with the F-15.

@@codyking4848 I was top gun pilot.
@maxsmith695 no your a Top Idiot
The Navy never operated the F-15. It didn't have the capability of carrier landings.
I'm calling BS on you being a top gun pilot.
