Don’t know if it’s the same down under, but here in the US we call a full set of nets/silks a “sandwich” since the frame color of the nets/silks are like the items in a sandwich (yellow for the cheese, green for the lettuce, red for the ketchup, etc). So if the gaffer on set says “get me a sandwich” they probably mean a full set of nets and silks like this. Great video Andrew, keep up the good work!
Andrew, I've lurked for a while, and as a result of watching your videos, last week I bit the bullet and bought a Kupo 546 Boom stand. For many years I have asked gaffers what nets did, but not until this point with this video, do I feel I truly understand their utility. This was brilliant teaching, and you are a brilliant teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, you are a pillar of goodness in an otherwise torrent of garbage. I'm in Sydney, so if you ever come this way there's a free couple of beers on offer for you 👍🏻
This was an INSANELY informative video on nets, I learned a lot and feel like I added a few extra tricks in my bag to further control lighting, thank you so much!
This is such good information. As someone without a formal film education, the depth that you went to here is it going to be very useful for me. Thank you so much!
Can you do a comparison video on 8x8 and 12x12 overhead scrims. I don't see any videos online doing a comparison between the big names like, Kupo, Matthews, Manfrotto, and Glide Gear. Thanks.
Ok I've been doing this 11 years and thought I knew everything. But that bit about the difference between diffusers and white nets was very informative!
that white net segment was mind blowing. never even seen one in a truck lol, now i want one handy. I have to test that out with interview setups. that could be a game changer
Truly top tier videos mate. I've never learned so much about lighting and gear from anyone on here. Even if I know most of what your are saying there always these hidden gems that are game changing. Your videos keep me sharp on set and always thinking bigger.
I never used net before. I understand how it works. But how net is compared to gels? Gels also could be natural and reduce light very good. Also we can use white diffusion fabric that reduce half or one ore two stops of light. I'm asking cause gels and diffusion fabric are more popular and could be found in many places.
Net are more if you don't want to diffuse and keep the beam shapes and shadows. ND can work, especially with soft boxes, and using it taped to C-Stand arms is what I did before I could afford a nets kit. A cheap alternative to net, that you can get at any hardware store is fly screen
Awesome stuff! Would love to see a video on how to light an interview with windows in the background. What would be the best way to reduce the exposure of the windows? Would love to see how you would do this. Thanks Andrew.
I'd also like to see a video from Andrew on how he'd do it, but this is a nice quick video to give an idea (from the Indy Mogul channel). They've a few other vids which are nice intros to lighting as well. ua-cam.com/video/lOosGSFU1Eo/v-deo.html
This is unreal! So clearly explains the differences. One question though: I don't quite understand when you mention you might use the silk when you can't get a blade frame in to position. Are you saying you can get an open end net into tighter spaces that a solid frame of the same size? Or Is this saying that you don't necessarily need to get the open end silk in to the perftct spot because you won't get a hard edged shadow anyway?
@@gaffergear That's what i figured. As i understood it, they're a bit smaller than the Skypanels. But that depends on cases. But you don't use the cases in your van either right?
@@MomentMediaSW problem for me is the skypanels pack super compact because I use them with the ball mounts. These only have a stirrup so they don't pack as small and won't fit on the same shelf
Just checked your van tour. Considering you'll loose the ballasts for the Skypanels it feels like you should be able to fit the Novas instead! Fingers crossed
I’ve never seen those 2x stop nets here in NYC and we rarely see white nets… you have to Special order. we do have lavender nets which are lighter than a single net. Might have to pick up a few white nets… my main vendor here doesn’t even make them have to order out of LA.
Hi Andrew! What makes the kit prevent you from having the flags stored the other way up? Is there a partition in that bag that stops it from being “upside down”?
If you were to choose between 18x24 and 24x36 - which ones would you buy first? bring with you? In what situations do you find yourself using either size?
With the nets folding at the open ends like you mentioned- whats a remedy for this? Im curious if theres potentailly a small folded plastic or cardboard we could use to clip on so they wouldnt bend over. Also, are there other options for a case that prevents this? Are the open ends possible to iron on low heat if they do bend and get stuck therefore causing shadows when using them?
In Australia sort of yes! A scrim is a metal version, usually in a ring shape to be dropped into the accessory slot behind barn doors. Some colour codes, green for 1/2 stop, red for full stop. The term scrim seems to have different meanings around the world, but for me a scrim reduces light without diffusing.
@@gaffergear Thank you kindly sir! I'm a student and I've finally been able to move on from PAing and onto G&E-ing as I get closer to graduation. Your channel has helped SO much!
Before watching this video: Nah....no way I'm gonna pay so much for such simple net. Dont think they will be useful anyway. After watching this video: Damn......I need those nets fast.
“I’m learning too much weird shit that I don’t need to know because of this guy” - my girlfriend
Keep up the great work Andrew.
The best introduction to nets I've ever seen! Brilliant.
So true. Have been using nets and flags a lot but never saw such a good breakdown!

Honestly more value in these videos for free than in 3 years of film school! Thank you dude!

The amount one learns from this channel is insane.
Oh great, something else I didn't know I needed to buy that I now need to buy.

This was great, I can't believe how much I didn't know about nets. Excellent Video thank you tons for this!
Searched the internet a while back for this information and found nothing. Thanks Andrew, this will help a lot of folks.
Brilliant, concise and illustrative demonstration of the precise qualities and differences between the nets. You really have a knack for explaining.
This is such good information. As someone without a formal film education, the depth that you went to here is it going to be very useful for me. Thank you so much!
Andrew, this is the best explanation of nets I have seen online. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
This is why I love this channel. Thanks Andrew!
Wow, I’ve never been introduced to these white full nets… they are absolutely AMAZING
Thanks for filling us in on why nets are still valuable with dimmable led lights.
Superb video. White net information and demonstration showing contrast adjustment with white net especially helpful. Thank you sir. 👍
Amazing lesson even for old hands, thanks!

My bad! I can't get a 4X4 or 3X3 into position. These are small enough and light enough that I can manoeuver them over and between things on a boom
Great episode! I like the mix of review and application.
Thanks for teaching about nets! first time I hear this in such a clear way! (and I do watch hundreds of tutorials!)
Thanks! I had no idea that white nets had that contrast-reduction property
Awesome - first class content!

Hi Andrew! What makes the kit prevent you from having the flags stored the other way up? Is there a partition in that bag that stops it from being “upside down”?
You can't grab the metal on the flag because the compartments are sealed at the top
I have this kit and put the nets in the other way around, seems to work. Should I not do this? What am I missing?
really nice . love your videos sir
Thanks man! 👍 I learned something here. 🙂
Outstanding video, this has helped so much! What budget nets would you recommend for someone starting out / a solo shooter?
Get the Kupo!! The price and value and quality is great.
If you were to choose between 18x24 and 24x36 - which ones would you buy first? bring with you? In what situations do you find yourself using either size?
24x36 that's what I use in interviews if someone has say a white t-shirt I need to reduce
Thanks for the information. 🙏🏾

Are nets safe to use with a Joker 400?
I used them with my bigger HMIs no problem, just be careful in spot.

thx!!!!
Now that LED lights with dimmers are everywhere, I'm seeing less of these nets.
