Great breakdown with fantastic detail of very fine looking footage! You are a credit to your profession. Thank you for taking the time to share. When I hear the murmurings of "you're giving away all the secrets" I think it comes from a lack of global awareness that this is actually the way mentoring is done now and when we share knowledge it makes us all better members of whatever crew we're on. Keep it up:)

Cheers Andrew! Your parting comment meant a lot. I worked in Hollywood for thirty years, mostly as a lighting tech and later gaffer. Because I was a member of the IA (a labor union) I often felt my contributions were discounted. You are lucky to be affiliated with a DP who values your work, instead of simply taking all the credit. Your lighting is beautiful and it is appropriate that people are made aware that this is a team effort -where all the members of a crew bring something special to the job. I am happy to see that you still use old school tech as well. This is the best time to be in the business, where the advantages of the new and the old can be blended together with amazing results! Thank you!

I absolutely agree with your comment about letting the upper people that lighting department have the knowledge that is required to carry out the shoots. I heavily cooperate with gaffers on shoots as a DOP for a reason - it is a leadership position and carries a heavy backload to make the shoot pop.

Thank you for sharing Andrew. I think your channel is gold, showing young people interested in the industry that there's more to the visual side than simply Director or DOP. Having worked under an experienced Gaffer for 4 years, the knowledge I've gained and respect for the Gaffer is unmeasurable for my long term goal as DOP of features. I still Gaff from time to time on smaller shoots in my home town, and can resonate that perception by many: Gaffers put lights on stands. Gaffers are at the tip of the spear of productions with knowledge and advise that is suuuuuper valuable.

This is great! Thank you for sharing. Something I feel would be valuable to talk about is the amount of time allotted/spent setting up these scenes. I feel that's one of the areas of least understanding for clients and agency professionals who don't work in production. Advocating for more setup time enough time when scheduling is taking place is always an enormous battle, at least in my experience working at places that don't want to pay for proper crews.

One of the most helpful videos I've seen this year. Thanks for this. I help with some UA-cam videos for my partner and my small business, I'm not doing anything this complex, but it really helps with ways to think about how I use my little Godox and all my cheap Neewer lights. I don't think anybody can "steal" years of experience with this sort of thing, I know myself I come into every project with a pre-conception of how it's going to look and never enough experience to make it look that way. But it does get better every time. Anyway thanks again for a great video.

Of course lovely work to all, the quality of the night vision goes without saying, but I also especially loooove the specular highlights, polish and texture in the daytime product shot!! I think that's my favourite.

What is that girl on??? LOL.. Thanks for putting this up. I learn so much from your videos. I used to be an actress, teacher and worked as a videographer on documentaries back in the 70's through the 90's. I didn't have the fantastic opportunities to learn about film making because being a mom of two, divorced and had a regular job on the side most of the time I couldn't afford film school. I did learn that lighting is the "other" actor. It's so important and like creating a character, it's complex. My daughter is starting a business on the internet and I have been helping her buy equipment. I'm knocked out with how you can now get amazing equipment for a relatively cheap price on the prosumer level. I am like a kid in a candy store! Thank you for all your work in putting these up and helping others. You are a wonderful teacher and one of the few who really knows their shit. Stay safe - vote (blue). LOL.

I've loved and learned from every video you have posted (the tip about orienting gels and diffusion on barn doors to allow heat to escape has never to my knowledge been offered anywhere else) since you began this outstanding channel, but this one was extra special as it made explicit the craft and care invested in what you - with typical understatement - describe as 'a very basic shoot'. If I could create something with one tenth the quality I would be made up! You sir are a born teacher and the wonderful largesse with which you and others (like Luke Serveld) share your incredible wealth of knowledge is quite simply marvellous. A thousand thanks - I will be making your channel required viewing for my students next academic year.
