@Bohbear we had him as a guest repeatedly at Anime Central from the convention launch and beyond (I think he'd been a guest 3 or 4 times by the time I had to bow out of con staffing due to health reasons, being ACen reg staff 1998-2007). The Chicago area fans LOVED him - and he apparently loved us as well for the support (and that the Con would take him to a firing range with gun rentals for a day of fun as part of his contract with the con). There was even a guy who'd cosplay as Bean Bandit every year, carrying a REAL CAR DOOR painted like one from a Chicago PD from the era that Riding Bean was set in (and of course, Sonoda signed it).
i don't consider it plagiarized, similar beat/rhythm structure yeah in some parts, but Konya wa Horricane's cadence, tonal layers, drum and guitar elements and lyrics (and it's more "kinectic" rock style) really make it it's own song that just a simple "oh it copied this other song". . .
The opening and verse of "hurricane" borrows from Akina's "Desire" but other parts of the song, like the chorus melody, are very different. So I wouldn't go so far as to call it plagiarized, but I agree it's a top anime song regardless
@@gilbertculloden87 It have nothing with Akina song... If Desire has that proto heavy rhythm and that's heavy metal, every band sound exactly the same...
@@MrEnsiferum77 Agree to disagree, the verse melody of both songs are very similar. Regardless, Konya wa Hurricane is an all-time great anime track and I'm very glad both songs exist

not new at all just the dubbed release of the 95-96 3 part OVA in 1080p: www.kickstarter.com/projects/madoverlord/gunsmith-cats-explosive-edition from the only done work of this: myanimelist.net/anime/650/Gunsmith_Cats It's how AnimEgo did many of the releases for BGCrisis before they did crowdfunding for the English releases so that detail was a bit misleading
There was also a tabletop RPG published by R Talsorian Games using the Fuzion system also used in Cyberpunk 2020. It's got a bunch of stuff in it that references concept art work or side story material for things like variant hard suit designs.
It does! I own a copy and it has a lot of detail on the hardsuits, ad police mecha and vehicles ( the firebee) , the griffon cybermonster in its various stages, and the highway star among others
I think a detail overlooked was the production and distribution of BGC for the Western Markets through The efforts of Robert Woodhead and Animeigo. That in itself is a pretty fascinating story, especially in that the dub voice talents performed the themes composed in English. Also the Kickstarter Blu-ray edition put together by Woodhead is fantastic and pretty lovingly done. But regardless, really nice video!
I'm glad you mentioned Animeigo. They were one of the first (if not the first) who put out faithfully translated subtitled anime commercially, just the way the fans wanted it, as opposed to 2nd or 3rd hand copies off of videotape, or waiting who knows how long for a copy from a fansub group. I think this was a big reason BGC is so popular in the US.
I saw a youtube short that featured some of the art and thankfully was able to find the whole series here on youtube. I had never heard of Bubblegum Crisis but on watching the first episode and seeing the date I can see the influence this must have been.

Man I love this series. I even own the tabletop RPG and have run it several times in the past. I would love to see it revived. Such memories. I think I need to give it a rewatch.
I first discovered Kenichi Sonoda works from "Riding Bean" and I absolutely love his artstyle, the characters, the car ,the guns all perfect. then I keep looking for his work, untill I found this series. sadly I still doesn't have a chance to buy it (since it's kinda expensive to buy a blu-ray in thailand) but from what I see I still think It's fabulous.
I've been a Bubblegum Crisis fan since 2000. Saved up allowances for months to import over a box set of the soundtrack CDs, which I still listen to (the ripped MP3s at least). Last year I watched Streets of Fire for the firs time, and nearly did a spit-take at the opening. It looked like Konya Wa Hurricane, but sounded just like Crisis. Now I have to look up these other songs...
BGC and 8th MS Team are my two favorite anime, simply for how well designed and executed they were. Incredible research and editing in this video. Thank you!!!!
Bubblegum Crisis is an amalgamation of rip offs from top to bottom...and damn I love it. I dunno, it has its own sort of charm despite all of its...clear inspiration.
Bubblegum Crash! music taking cues from a Joey Albert album makes perfect sense, as production of the series and AD Police Files was outsourced to the Philippines.
I still remember this was the first time I had ever heard of Japanese Anime, even though, technically I never knew it that Transformers in the 80's and G. I. Joe can be considered it, but I was hooked on Anime! The soundtrack is also what set this apart!!
I really really wanted a OST release of the English renditions of the songs too. I even contacted AnimEigo, but they told me a lot of the songs they recorded were not complete and just enough to dub into the show :(
Robert Woodhead told me that too years ago, I specifically asked if there was a full version of mad machine and he told me no, but there actually is, the composition is different from the japanese. I think he just meant in general most of the songs don't have full versions. Would still be great to get a clean version of Victory even if its just the first verse.
Remember: if someone ever says cartoons are just for kids tell them how a mans life was threatened by the yakuza over an anime with borderline copyright music.
Wow, excellent video. BGC was fantastic back in the day and Artmic/AIC had such a great team of animators/directors/designers too. Sonoda doesn't get enough recognition for his work on BGC or his other works. I had no idea about Suzuki's fate either. Don't undersell the actual BGM too. Yeah, it got high marks for the songs (ripped off or not), but the instrumental music is killer throughout that series.
I was into Bubble gum Crisis and Crash from the beginning and collect the music but knew none of this. Thank you for your diligent work in presenting this aspect of a beloved anime.
Streets of Fire, would later inspire the game Final Fight. Man I loved Bubblegum Crisis, one of my most favorite anime, of all time- and the music was insane! BGC along with Blade Runner, made me fall in love with cyberpunk, and inspired a little comic I did in school.. Which I think I will redo.. 80's, and 90's.. The golden era of anime
This was a pleasant surprise to find this video dropped on my birthday. The OAV that started my lifelong love of anime in general! Thanks for this, you just got a sub!
Bubblegum Crisis is amazing. One of the most stylish anime ever produced. The music, the animation, the designs: all top notch. It's a little light on story, but the style and action make up for that. It's also one of few cyberpunk works that is fun and not depressing. I agree that Crash is skippable. It just lacks the energy of the og series. Even the story sucks. I don't remember much of 2040. But I do remember it being just okay. Not groundbreaking like the OVA. It's crazy thinking that this franchise has been dormant for over 20 years at this point. I think there's a nostalgia boom going on in anime recently and I hope whoever still own Bubblegum Crisis gives it another chance. The cyberpunk genre is more relevant than ever now.
Very well done mini documentary! I'm a huge fan of the series as well as Robotech and Megazone 23. I didn't know there was a relation between them. Killer soundtrack in BGC too. Hearing those songs bring me back to my teen years in the 80s.
Much of that music was by Koji Makaino. He's got a lot of other music to his name and some of it is just amazing stuff. Seek out his other works. It's worth it!
I remember when Bubblegum Crisis was being released . First I got the series on VHS later I got them on laser disc. But it took me longer to get all 8 CD's and the two Vocal CD's. Even though they are now on my PC I still listen to them.
Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash are both really good and I love the cyberpunk vibe. They're definitely worth a watch, even if the music is mostly stolen and the animation begins to dip in quality with Crash.
This was a series that was worth buying one episode at a time on VHS. Fortunately, Animeigo was able to do quite a bit better in terms of pricing for the American release than the rental-pricing seen in Japan (although twenty-five to thirty dollars a tape still made anime seem like an expensive hobby back then).
Bubblegum Crisis was my first and still favorite anime, I've still got my tapes from AnimEgo and even a couple of the old mail order catalogs stuffed away somewhere. If I can put any one anime on a pedestal above all others, that's the one. I will defend it and sing it's praises to the end. ADPolice Files is fun for what it is. Crash is passable but hard to re-watch. I hated Tokyo 2040 and it's spinoffs. Kenichi Sonoda was a major influence on my own art style in my younger years, he is a wildly underrated artist.
Thanks for the hard work on this man. Always wondered why yhis IP fell by the wayside. I had half of the original run on VHS back in the day. Soundtrack was fire! Still listwning to Mr Dandy from time to time!
Wow, that's crazy. Owned the 2032-2033 OVA, complete vocal collection, and Crash, last was a let down. I need to get the sound track for for Crash tho.
Oh... Oh gosh, I had no idea what became of Toshimichi Suzuki or how come the remake was so off course from the original! I just remember being pissed it looked so different. I'm so sad! ;o; He didn't deserve to be treated that way. RIP
I watched this anime (and other notables) back in early 2020 for the first time, iirc. It was very good. I totally love the 80's style of anime, and I would definitely consider it to be a huge deal in terms of what they accomplished.
MAAAN, Thank you for this, I watched all of it religiously and always wonder what happened... "Now I know with all questions answered, great video, great breakdown, and I hope someone out there will revive this awesome anime." Thank you sooo much... :)
There hasn't been a year that I've NOT lamented this anime's demise! The ups and downs were stressful and disheartening! If they relaunched this it would have a HELL of an uphill battle to do it justice! NONE of the follow up stuff thus far can hold a candle to Crisis.
First we need a quality check department made of people who loved BGC OVA! Then we can organize all the jobs and licenses necessary to make a proper remake with all the original songs, designs and plot! Get sponsors or kickstarter etc. do it! After that AD police etc... It could be the revival of TRUE cyberpunk anime!👍
This was the anime that got me into anime.... after watching he-man, GI Joe, Jem, and Transformers I was introduced to Bubblegum Crisis episode 3 Blow-up... my young middle school brain exploded within the first 3 minutes of that show. It has spawned a life long love of anime and Japanese pop/rock music.

Thanks, I knew I couldn't be the only person who's had that singer shouting MA-CU-ROSS living rent free in my head for the past 20 years.
Man I love this series. I even own the tabletop RPG and have run it several times in the past. I would love to see it revived. Such memories. I think I need to give it a rewatch.
Tabletop RPG? Tell me more?
@@ShimodaNexus you might be able to find a copy on ebay
I first discovered Kenichi Sonoda works from "Riding Bean" and I absolutely love his artstyle, the characters, the car ,the guns all perfect. then I keep looking for his work, untill I found this series. sadly I still doesn't have a chance to buy it (since it's kinda expensive to buy a blu-ray in thailand) but from what I see I still think It's fabulous.
Bubblgum Crisis was and maybe still is one of my favorite animes. I remember getting it on vhs around the same time as GunBuster.
Been rewatching all Crisis and Crash episodes yesterday - music SLAPS like when I was 8!
I'll fight you on this Mercury, the Bubble Gum Crash opener is a banger.
Thank you for the video and research that went into it. I did not know all these shows were related. Brings back memories.
Hay Mr DANDY Hay Mr JOY. that song always will stick with me
I've been a Bubblegum Crisis fan since 2000.
I love Bubblegum Crisis, it had one of the best vocal soundtracks ever, I still listen to it today !!!
BGC and 8th MS Team are my two favorite anime, simply for how well designed and executed they were. Incredible research and editing in this video. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for this. This was my fav anime growing up.
Thanks for reviving some great memories!
Bubblegum Crisis is an amalgamation of rip offs from top to bottom...and damn I love it. I dunno, it has its own sort of charm despite all of its...clear inspiration.
This was a really great video. Keep up the great work man. I love your channel for the recaps of old niche shows - you find a lot of gems.
Thats a very long back story but Im glad one of my childhood fave shows got released
Bubblegum Crash! music taking cues from a Joey Albert album makes perfect sense, as production of the series and AD Police Files was outsourced to the Philippines.
God, I love this channel, the work and research you put into these videos is amazing.
Cops that investigate boomer crimes would be an interesting show nowadays.
Some Bubblegum Crisis love in 2021? Yes please!
Bubblegum Crisis is so iconic and cool. I love it
I still remember this was the first time I had ever heard of Japanese Anime, even though, technically I never knew it that Transformers in the 80's and G. I. Joe can be considered it, but I was hooked on Anime! The soundtrack is also what set this apart!!
One of the greatest!!! One of the best sound track!!!
Good video man gosh it’s been forever since I heard bubblegum crisis. Lol what that video “Rock Me “
One of my all time favorite series.......BGC still stands the test of time.......love it❤️❤️❤️
The Crash OP is sick. I think the fans just got attached to particular music too much, as someone coming in fresh, it's totally solid.
Bubblegum Crisis is still one of the most amazing anime out there and was one of the first OAV series I saw back in the 90’s.
I was into Bubble gum Crisis and Crash from the beginning and collect the music but knew none of this. Thank you for your diligent work in presenting this aspect of a beloved anime.
While 'Victory' was clearly inspired by 'Nowhere Fast', it also has the basic melody from 'He-Man'.
I actually had that in an early edit but it didn’t make the cut
@@MercuryFalcon Great minds think alike, I guess.
And yet, despite everything, the original OVA episodes are still leaps and bounds above the dumpster fire that the 2040 series was.
Megazone 23 part 1 and 2 are amazing. We don't talk about part 3
I remember the day I found this on laser disc.
I love Bubblegum Crisis, thank you for this video!!!!!!
I love Bubblegum Crisis and A.D Police. Some of the best anime ever produced.
BGC music is top notch and all of the CDs have some of the best music ever made.
This was a pleasant surprise to find this video dropped on my birthday. The OAV that started my lifelong love of anime in general! Thanks for this, you just got a sub!
Thanks you... This was awesome!
And thanks again for your work on that video and this channel
Bubblegum Crisis is what got me into anime in the 90's during my early 20's.
This youtube remind me of the voices of random army veterans, civie video game youtuber and kenny lauderdale. Great video
Very well done mini documentary! I'm a huge fan of the series as well as Robotech and Megazone 23. I didn't know there was a relation between them. Killer soundtrack in BGC too. Hearing those songs bring me back to my teen years in the 80s.
BGC is such a gem. Great music, animation and setting. The American comic was great, too (Grand Mal).
Man, tons of research to put this all together. Thanks so much for compiling all of this.
It has probably the best anime soundtrack ever made! Amazing 80s early 90s anime.
Much of that music was by Koji Makaino. He's got a lot of other music to his name and some of it is just amazing stuff. Seek out his other works. It's worth it!
These were the first anime soundtracks I ever bought... I had the music videos vhs too lol
I remember when Bubblegum Crisis was being released . First I got the series on VHS later I got them on laser disc. But it took me longer to get all 8 CD's and the two Vocal CD's. Even though they are now on my PC I still listen to them.
It's great but can't beat Yuji Ohno's work for Lupin
Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash are both really good and I love the cyberpunk vibe. They're definitely worth a watch, even if the music is mostly stolen and the animation begins to dip in quality with Crash.
happy 35th anniversary bubblegum crisis!!! :3
Still better than the pricing at Funimation. $70 a season!.
"Nowhere Fast" from the Streets of Fire soundtrack clearly inspired Bubblegum Crisis' "Konya wa Hurricane."
Maybe some influence, but clearly it was much more derivative of Akina Nakamori's "Desire."
Those inspired/plagiarized songs are better than the originals, like they have more energy.
Favorite Anime of all time. Cyberpunk to the max..
BGC has a lot of connections to Robotech
I've never stopped having the BGC vocal collection in my playlists!
Great video! I love BGC.
Thank you for this, BGC is one of my all time faves! Used to have the entire original VHS collection. ^_^
I listen to this clip too many times. Awesome making of.
