    This music used to be called soft rock. Then, years later it became known as yacht rock. You know what I call it? Music comfort food. Cracker Barrel for the ears. You can listen to this just to chill, when it’s a rainy day, you just got home after a long flight, or go out for a late night drive and it’s so soothing.

    • @daveowens9849

      I hate that term Yacht Rock. Too elitist for me. Most of us will never own a yacht, or be on a yacht, so why brand the music something it isn't and will never be? Hate that term.

      @Sweetish_Jeff_ Рік тому +3

      @@daveowens9849 I hate it, too. I put it up there with “blue-eyed soul”. Why can’t it just be soul music? Who cares what color somebody’s eyes or skin are colored?

I'll be danged if I understand why the term "yacht rock" is attached to music that was recorded twenty years before that elitists term was created. Sink the boat!

      I like your description of late-night-drive songs....much better than 'yacht rock'. The first time I heard this song, as well as George Benson's "Give me the Night", was the first time I came to the USA, and my family and I were on the way from the airport to our family friend's home to stay for a few days before catching our flight from PIT to JFK and then onward. Of course it was a night time drive. Up to that point I'd only heard pop and rock when someone played it at a friend's house or a party, but both of those songs were just past current, and it amazed me that you had many radio stations playing cool tunes at all times of the day! Like going to JFK and having a few-hour layover but never being far from a place to get something to eat, even back in 1980, haha.
      I'm a citizen of the USA now and I'll always associate what they used to call soft rock with the late night drive, but as a grown-up it's with a hot cup of coffee in the holder in case I need it to keep me rolling, my traveling companion breathing softly in her sleep in the passenger seat, only a few more hours to go before hotel or home, and that feeling of deep calm and peace. It's so hard to come by, but I know at least one place I can find it.

    I was 15, in the middle of teenage angst, when this song came out. The girl that I was infatuated with didn't feel the same. This song spoke into my pain and helped me deal with what I was feeling. Songs like this help so much by letting us know that we are not the only one having these intense romantic feelings.

    I met Ambrosia back in 2006. One of my friends was in charge of gong to the airport to pick up the band. He asked me if I wanted to meet them. I said yes! I said I wanted to sing with them as well. True to his word, he found me at the concert. He took me to meet the band. I went inside to their trailer. Met the entire band. Then the singer said: so, we heard that you want to sing with us? I was half joking when I told my friend. He told the band I wanted to sing with them. Less than 5 minutes of meeting them, they asked me to sing for them. This was the song I chose. I was harmonizing with the band. They told me that they'd call me on stage to sing with them you're the the biggest part of me. I'm like oh my gosh! We hung out and had wine and cheese and crackers. Then they had to get ready to perform. I took my seat and sat and waited watching the concert. True to their word, I was called on stage. I sang, rather did the harmonizing part of the song. After song I was trying to get off the stage. The singer said ANGIE!!!! I got back on stage. Everyone took hold of hands and we all did a bow. I will not EVER forget this. I went home after concert. The following Monday my friend said they asked where I went after concert. I didn't know I could've hung out with them after. I was just on a natural high from doing something amazing and special. These guys are absolutely amazing, kind and funny!

    Beautiful Mellow song. Always a listen when I'm in a mellow relaxing mood. As others have already said "Holdin' On To Yesterday" by Ambrosia is a wonderful early song by them that you will enjoy. David Pack also has a solo song that many forget to mention that is just wonderful "That Girl Is Gone". Some other soft rock or mellow songs by other artists that you will also enjoy would be "Goin' Down" by Greg Guidry (1982), "Is It You" by Lee Ritenour featuring Eric Tagg (1981), "You Belong To Me" by Carly Simon (1978), "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck (1976), "Cab Driver" by Daryl Hall (1996). You have not listened to Chris Isaak in a long long time and I suggest "Can't Do A Thing (To Stop Me)" (1993) by him. To get back to James Taylor at some point he has great songs like "Shower The People", "Handy Man" and "Her Town Too" that you will enjoy. For a real rare treat I would suggest "Love You Out of Your Mind" (1981) by Byrne & Barnes an American music duo consisting of Robert Byrne and Brandon Barnes. There are so many others but these I think you will enjoy for a start.

    Listening to this reminds me of another band that you have only done once and falls into the same lane. Pablo Cruise. And the song I would pick would be Love Will Find a Way. Definitely getting back to them for this is worth your time. You'll love it.

  • @StevesFunhouse
    @StevesFunhouse Рік тому +3

    The one you're missing the most is Holdin' On To Yesterday. It's a beautiful song bit a little sad. However, it's got great piano and guitarwork (well, everything, including violins ... no, not violence 🤣) in it, and was, in fact, their first hit.

    Pablo Cruise - Love Will Find A Way / Average White Band - A Love Of Your Own / Malo - Suavecito / Black Ivory - You And I / Hall & Oates - Me And Mrs. Jones (live) / Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - If This World Were Mine / Jackson 5 - All I Do Is Think Of You / Norman Connors feat. Michael Henderson & Phyllis Hyman - You Are My Starship / The O'Jays - Brandy / Teena Marie - Portuguese Love

    • @lreed1040
      @lreed1040 Рік тому

      That's a great list and some of them I have suggested long ago like "You Are My Starship", "If This World Were Mine" and "Love Will Find A Way". They also need to hear other classics like "Sweet Baby" by Stanley Clarke, "Misty Blue" by Dorothy Moore, "Never Too Much" by Luther, "Free" by Deniece Williams, "Love Won't Let Me Wait" by Major Harris. Musts that I can't believe that they have not listen to yet are "Love Ballad" by L.T.D., "That's The Way of the World" and "After The Love Is Gone" by Earth, Wind & Fire. They never have done a song by The Stylistics yet. There are so many others they need to hear.

    • @Musicvegan01
      @Musicvegan01 Рік тому +1

      @@lreed1040 Since Jay has said he likes falsetto, then there is "Queen Of My Heart" by DeBarge & "Shoe Shoe Shine" by The Dynamic Superiors. With the 2nd song, they should try to find the performance on "Soul Train". There used to be a good quality video on UA-cam, but now there's only one with poor video quality. For bass guitar - "Are You Single" by Aurra.

      There is a duality to Ambrosia...the Yacht Rock side & the Yes/Genesis-influenced Prog Rock side...unfortunately most don't know of their other side...their last full album, 1982's Road Island has more in common with the prog metal of Rush than the hit ballads most know...should be more balanced

    Finally, they did some really good music again with Ambrosia's You're the Only Woman. You should also consider Dan Fogelberg (Another Old Lang Syne), great story song, George Benson (Turn Your Love Around), Michael McDonald (You Belong to Me, No Looking Back Now) and Charlene (I've Never Been to Me--with lyrics, NOT the video), another great story song. Love it or hate it, there's no other song like that one

"Time ","Don't Answer Me"" I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" and more.. Parson helped produce Paul Mccartney,' Hollis , Al Stewart ,Pink Floyd and more .He started at EMI Abby Road. Allen Parsons Symphonic Project is were a full Colombian Symphony plays with the band it is fantastic..

    I'd never heard of this band before so I'm glad to have discovered them - thanks to you two and the ones who suggested it! I like that "middle of the road" kind of easy, cruising feeling. In the 90's, an artist called Jeff Buckley had amazing, unique and angelic vocals. You should check out "Grace", "Hallelujah" and "Last Goodbye" - to start with. ❣
