Chevy NV3500 5 speed manual transmission Tear-Down PART 1: Separating the halves

- This is not a how to video. I have never torn down one of these transmissions before. Considering these units are getting harder to find and more expensive I would rather tear this one open to see if shes worth saving. From what I can see.. All of the gears themselves are in serviceable condition. This unit will need a good cleaning, new bearings, synchros and seals..
UPDATE! I successfully did a partial rebuild of my NV3500 using this video and your reply to my message. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I only replaced the main input shaft bearing, but if I have any more issues i'll be back!!
I don't know if this is addressed in a later video - BUT the tiny "donut" bearings on the front of the shift rail stay in place fabulously with a dab of grease and a wrap of teflon tape.
ALSO - get that grease ICE COLD to hold the front case shaft support bearing in the case. BAM!!
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!
How did you removed the detent pin? it was damaged in that moment?
Excellent demonstration it's always good to learn something thanks
I figure ill take it apart the rest of the way tomorrow
@@beeterolds I'll be waiting👍
All bearings will wobble a "little bit" as long as they don't make any noise their good
@0:57 Can you get the front bearing out from underneath that sprung c-clip without disassembling the rest of the trans?
was wondering the same .been told you can take the bearing out without splitting..but also been told u have to split ..ugh
I watched the video just to see what one of those through bolt holds. never was able to see what it connects to.
Was curious wat chevy you found this in with the seperate bell housing great videos appreciate all the info
I have a 97 S10 4.3 rwd with this exact tranny in it.
Use a 10" extension and you don't have to keep clocking your impact
Remanufactured nv3500.. still has problems quickly shifting into third. I'm thinking it's the synchros.. any information on that. Just installed this month and it's super annoying
Do you have a video of removing the transmission from the vehicle?
How can you replace the tailshaft seal?
would like some quick advice opinions. I have a 2003 nv3500 from Silverado. it's 4x4. the 2-3 shift is horrible. sometime gets stuck, sometimes grinds a hair. then sometimes when pulling it out of 3 to neutral you can move the stick left or right in the shifter gate.. this happens with engine running or not and witch clutched pushed in or not.
if I super baby it it seems to be ok. do you think it needs replacement or the shift forks? I believe this is the single shifter rail style and not the 3 rail. I'll have to remove shift tower again and look....
Apart from the mtf synchromhes oil, the one that has what other can you put if there is not, what is the equivalence?
Any reason why you didn't show the hardest part? Getting out that detent without the "special tool" WTF? LOL
I drilled it and tapped it and pulled it out with a slide hammer
@@beeterolds Thank you very much kindly sir! I’m going to start beating on mine tomorrow and that part is key!
Nice video
my 3rd and 5th gear sound like shit and i have same transmission ,, anyone know what bearing kit i would need
Is that the unit that was on the s10 ? Did it not hold up well behind the 5.3?
Held up perfectly fine. I just finished tearing it apart. It had a lot of miles on it. Gears are good. Needs bearings and synchros and she will be as good as new
👏🤟
Anyone here rebuild these I just got my first truck and can’t find anything about these at one time people tried telling me 350’s didn’t come with 5 speeds, every gear clanks but 4th.
buying one of these for my 2002 v6 4.3L s10, need help first s10
Conversion or stock? I absolutely love the 4.3 5 speed s10s. I daily my 95. 230k about in the original trans.
They are beasts of a trans.
Can you tell me where the fill/ drain plugs are?
On the side they take an enormous Allen wrench
@@beeterolds ya my 97s10 transmission don't have any plugs at all. Took it off the truck (had to change the clutch plate)and looked everywhere and nothing.
@@Timthefamsmith they should on the right side or passenger side. Mine is a 95 and it has them. One to drain on bottom and one to fill on passenger. Takes both a 17mm Allen. Nv3500 s10.
@@ErrorlVlacro ya that is not the case for mine. Only way to drain my NV3500 is to remove it..
Is there a definitive parts list anywhere to pair a NV3500 to SBC? I have RWD gearbox out of a 2001 S10 and will be pairing it with a Gen I 350 to swap into a 1986 Jeep Cherokee.
They put that trans behind the 350. Its not hard to search rock auto or use all the parts from the S10
SBC flywheel with S10 clutch kit?
@@imarobotrocker its all the same bro. We just did the same thing to that 350 going into the old Malibu
Those r a pain without the jig to align everything
To put back together I mean
I know what i am building tomorrow
Miller 6747
Is the fixture it's called a transmission pallet I believe u can make your own though
Not for $200. Ill make mine
