This color footage is amazing! Highlights look much more bland in black and white. I feel like even a tan shading helps do old footage some justice, but color is a whole new world.
You are absolutely right. Larusso would be a good power forward today! A big hefty 6-7 with a good outside shot and monster on the boards- tenacious defender. If he hadn't been on the same team with West and Baylor, Larusso could have scored 22-25 ppg.
The NBA films of the 1960s were put together by the Winiks. They were the NBA's answer to the Sabols, who began NFL Films (originally known as Blair Motion Pictures) in 1962.
Jerry West and Elgin Baylor---as commentator said, no better offensive duo. too bad they were beaten by Boston Celtics every year in 1960s, and Knicks beat them in 1969-70 season. Lakers finally won it all in 71-72, but Baylor retired at beginning of season
Lakers never had a dominant center in the era of the dominant centers until they got Chamberlain. They should have won in 1969 -- they had the better team. But the Celtics had the better coach -- Russell.
As a Celtic fan I am really impressed by the defense, conditioning, passing and unselfishness of the Russell Celtics. John Havlicek had superhuman stamina
It was said that Havlicek's chest X-ray needed to be shot on two plates because his lungs were too big to fit in the frame. I don't know if I believe that, but that was a story in print before the Internet.
When the Lakers moved to Los Angeles their first homecourt was the Memorial Sports Arena, yet some games were occasionally played in the Shrine Auditorium. The only flaw was that when a player flew off the court, he'd end up in the orchestra pit. This is when the team had those white unis (blue for the road) with the script "Los Angeles" on the front. The Sports Arena was the Lakers home court from 1960-67.
This is the first time I've ever seen actual footage of Dick Barnett and Don Nelson as LA Lakers ....usually only see footage of them as Knicks and Celtics respectively
Such a shame that Elgin Baylor's knees had to give out on him in 1963-64 and 1964-65 causing him to miss out on the playoffs in 1965 and robbing him of his quickness, agility and jumping ability. I believe that if Baylor's knee injuries never happened the Lakers would've won the Finals in 1966, 1968, 1969, and 1970 and Baylor because he would've helped take much of the scoring load off of West and in 1969 and 1970 taking the rebounding load off of Chamberlain, and would've retired averaging 30ppg and 15rpg a game throughout his career with five championships to his name 1966, then a three-peat from 1968 to 1970, then 1972.
Elgin blames his knees on the segregated parks in Washington D.C. that didn’t allow him to him to access swimming pools as a youngster. He felt that if he learned to swim, he could have kept his knees in shape.
How cool to see Wilt and Nate Thurmond play together. This is the year the Warriors first played as San Francisco Warriors moving from Philadelphia. Don Nelson didn't stay long in LA. Gene Wiley was a better defender than Leroy Ellis. He was also a very talented artist.
This film has to be at the conclusion of the 1964-65 season. Chick says it's from the 1963-64 season & so do the graphics, but, Walt Hazzard was leading UCLA to its first title in 1964 - he was yet to be a Laker. Other roster comparisons & evidence place the film in the following season as well. Strange!!!
Leroy Ellis is wearing 25, which was later worn by future stars Gail Goodrich and Mitch Kupchak. The Lakers put away 25 to honor Goodrich. Center Jim Krebs is wearing 32, which later belonged to Magic Johnson and it was retired in his honor.
It’s definitely the 64 season Wilt is in San Francisco. In 65 he was traded after the all star game and the Warriors unis was different. Not to mention he was sporting a face mask that season too.

He had a facial tic. I think it was Jerry West who said it happened so suddenly and unexpectedly that Baylor used it like a move to freeze defensive players.
I didn't know Havlicek dunked? I saw him play quite a bit in the early seventies on TV,but I don't think he dunked past about 68' or so. There is footage of Don Nelson dunking in 1966 with the Celts, which was pretty unusual for those days. Is there footage of anybody besides Wilt,Russell,Mikan and Pettit dunking in the NBA in the fifties? I saw Gene Wiley Lakers Center dunk pretty good early in this video.
Havlicek's first NBA basket was a dunk! He wrote about it in his autobiography. He claimed that after the last 60s he dunked "once a year," just to show he still could, but it wasn't really part of his game or anything he cared about. I saw more than one game where he chose a layup on an open breakaway.

@@luke-mm4hs I don't know about "never" again (unless the NBA were to fold relatively soon) but as a life long New Englander I've always said even 2008 was a very lucky championship. Celtics won 16 in 29 years, and now it has been 1 in 35 years. Pretty brutal.
I am amazed at the quality and color of this video in 1964.

Rudy Larusso is extremely underrated.
