The 1972-73 season would mark Wilt Chamberlain's final NBA season. The ABA's San Diego Conquistadors wanted to bring Chamberlain out of retirement to play, but because the Lakers had his playing rights, he could not suit up to play, but he could coach. In his first and last season as head coach, he led the Q's to a 37-47 mark during the 1973-74 season.
Grew up in Inglewood; as a 10!yr old became an obsessed fan late season 1971, combing through NBA Factbook to discover all those years of finals heartbreak. Then spoilt to witness the greatest season ever in 71-72, watching practices at Loyola Marymount and the Forum, and a handful of games with my Pops. Sublime memories
The first game my Dad ever took me to was a Laker game. Jerry West had a big game, the Lakers won, and I was a Mr Clutch and Lakers fan. Those were great days.
Never saw this before, I was a huge Laker fan back in the 70's and 80's. No better announcer than Chick Hearn, used to listen to him on the radio all the time here in Arizona. RIP Chick

Happy Hairston was a wonderful guy. He ran a charitable foundation in Century City after his career ended. So sad; he went through hell for years before he died.
The rumor was that Happy Hairston was always the last guy out of the locker room. And guys would come back to find some personal stuff missing. The couldn’t prove that Hap stoled anything but people were suspicious 🤨 of him.

None of these Lakers were on the 79-80 Championship team. But former Sonic Spencer Haywood was. Unfortunately, he was suspended for the 1980 NBA Finals.
In his only season in Los Angeles, veteran Spencer Haywood was a member of the 1980 Lakers NBA Championship squad, which featured rookie sensation Magic Johnson. As a reserve, Haywood was suspended for showing up late for a practice session and sleeping thru a team meeting.

@@casualfandestroyer2503 Wilt had plenty of heart. Poor coaching on the Lakers in ‘69. Mediocre coaching in ‘70 and ‘71. Plus in ‘71 Wilt should not have come back late in the season.
