I've been a Beck fan since 1965 and Clapton fan since 1966. In the interview you mentioned, Clapton was asked if there was anything on the guitar that Beck can do that he can't and Clapton replied yes. Jeff was asked that same question is there anything Eric can do that he can't and Jeff replied "No." Thank you for the video.

There is no rivalry between Beck and Clapton. Beck is a far superior guitarist to the point where it’s ridiculous to even consider in my opinion.

You are insane my friend. Beck plays well and has good riffs but is nowhere near the song writer and singer Clapton. I can’t even sit and listen to a full record but Beck and enjoy it, whereas I can listen to all of Clapton.

@@robertjohnson3855Clapton obviously had more arrows in his quiver than Beck. He was a better writer and singer. But, when it comes to guitar.... Beck is indeed head and shoulders above Clapton. Eric never really strayed from standard "coffee table" blues. Beck was far more adventurous.....all the way up to his dying day.

@robertjohnson3855, why do you counter the opinion (actually fact) that Beck is the superior guitarist with the “song writing and singing” argument? Both Clapton and Page were head and shoulders above Beck in those two categories, but that wasn’t the topic.

Beck's superior chops are clearly demonstrated in the video "JEFF BECK & ERIC CLAPTON - Further On Up The Road" from 1981. Even Clapton seems to acknowledged at one point that he had been beat. But at the same time, you can see that they were both having fun with it.

Jeff Beck was a guitarist without any competitors in sight. One of his generation. Unique. When you hear Beck it always sounds almost impossible! Clapton is another guitarist in a long line and there is no end of a more or less uniform level that never soared to heights

From what I've read (and I'm really reading between the lines here) and surmised Clapton was hoping that the Yardbirds would disintegrate after his departure. When he discovered that he was replaced by the unknown (at that time) Jeff Beck He paid a visit to see his old band at the Marquee with the hopes that they would invite him up and he would proceed to wipe the floor with Beck. Well the first part went according to plan but for the second part not so much as Beck could stand with anyone and according to a young Brian May who was in the audience, Beck's performance that night made him a life long fan.
A pissed off Eric Clapton continually put down Beck to all his famous friends which is why Beck was never invited to the in-parties etc.Of all the Yardbirds Beck was the only out-going one and He was always trying to get invites to these Beatles held soirees at the Bag O'Nails with no luck. It wasn't till Beck won Best guitarist in Beat Instrumental's 1966 poll, that other musicians started to befriend him, Keith Moon being the first, then He finally got to mix with the other Rock royalty much to Clapton's chagrin. I think Beck always used this slight to become the greatest Rock Guitarist since Hendrix in the years to come. I don't think they got pal-ly till much later. Speaking of Hendrix. after he blew Clapton off the stage he later liked to
challenge other British players and one night he got the opportunity to jam with Jeff (sometime in late 66') trying to outdo Beck but apparently Jeff was up for the challenge and held his own against the late great Guitar-slinger. IMHO

I much prefer to listen to music by Jeff Beck over Eric Clapton. It's not that I don't like Eric Clapton's music. It's just that I much prefer to listen to Jeff Beck's music over almost all other musicians. It's the tone, and the groove, and a million other indefinables. Both were great musicians who helped define the culture of a generation.

Essentiaally, this stuff isn´t important. I grew up listening to those guys and at 70 maybe I am a grumpy old man, but I have heard various versions of this same story so many times it just leaves me cold. They were both very good guitar players. Full stop.

I was never really into the Yardbirds. I was too young. By the time I heard them, I’d already heard more modern bands like the Stones, John Mayall and free, so compared to them I felt that the Yardbirds were a bit tame. Hearing about the rivalry between Beck and Clapton, I can imagine how Clapton must have felt when Jimi Hendrix turned up! 😳

"Blues scene mostly confined to London". Does that statement need more careful examination? The famous Rosetta Tharpe clip is of her playing in Manchester in 1964 (when Muddy Waters and Sonny Terry also played). John Mayall, Macclesfield born and Manchester bred. Dylan's infamous electric gig - Free Trade Hall, Manchester. The Beatles (and notable others making up the Mersey Beat Sound) - Liverpool. Etc. etc. Basically, I think places like the North West were right up there (ahead even?) in appreciating blues music and its derivatives and in doing original creative stuff with it. But, just like Brits wanted to break the US market to make money, Northerners no doubt took themselves to London for better UK earning prospects. The big sucks in the small. But we shouldn't airbrush out where the golden geese lived and laid their eggs, be it the US Deep South, or North West UK.

To be a great guitarist you must be able to play all types of music. Eric Clapton plays The blues extremely well. But I have never seen him play anything but the blues. I'm sorry but blues is one of the easiest musics to play . This is why you see 10 year old kids playing the blues. If Clapton is as great as people say that he is, maybe show us some skills beside the blues. Honestly, Glen Campbell would make both of them look like amateurs.
