Madonna is known to imply different meanings in her songs. When she performed this live on the Who’s That Girl Tour in 1987, towards the end of the song she was singing to a projected image of Ronald Reagan, who was President at the time. Another father figure who shouldn’t preach. Great reaction. Oh, Father is another one you should check out.
She was talking about an actual baby. She got pregnant and was in a huge mess. Religious and conservative assholes flipped out about this song. They burned her records and called her a whore for "encouraging" their precious kids to get pregnant and keep the baby. She took a lot of flack for being pro-choice at a time when The Catholic Church condemned the use of condoms and contraceptives and teenage pregnancy was at an all time high. Biggest selling world wide hit song from 1986 taken from the biggest selling album from a female artist in the 80's, True Blue. Madonna always stood her ground no matter what she was up against and never backed down. This woman is a force of nature up to this very day and she has earned her place as the biggest selling female artist of all time(selling over 400 million records in her career).j
"She got pregnant and was in a huge mess..."? What? No. Just no. This song was a compeleted one when it was presented to her. She changed the lyrics a bit because she thought this song is about a girl who is actually making an important choice with her life. This song is not in any way about a personal experience of hers. The lyrics could be intrepreted also being about a lover, not an actual baby. For the video they chose this interpretation. And that was a good choice, in my personal opinion. But still, the lyrics are multi-dimensional, and left for intrepretation.
Love this video and song..she was so courageous and ballsy and still is ...she got so much flack for tackling a taboo subject ..she was pro choice and here decided to keep her baby despite her friends telling her she was too young and should give it up...she asked her father not to preach but to give advice and support..the Catholics church got it wrong in their condemnation as encouraging teenagers to get pregnant ..but all she was doing was saying it happens let's deal with it ..and they should have supported the pro life stance if anything ...instead they excommunicated her ..but the kids got it ..they celebrated it all the way to no 1 in over 30 or so countries ..nice reaction .try Like A Prayer ..she was never afraid to tackle a taboo subject
This song was no 1 in the uk for 4 weeks snd tsken from the album true blue the biggest selling akbum of 1986 about teensge pregnancy the slbum eas dedicated to her then husband sean Penn the coolest guy in the universe in the uk the album had 3 no1 hits thanks for the reaction video
It was very controversial at the time as the religious people clutched their pearls and huffed a lot, but as a whole lot of Madonna songs, the lyrics have a dual meaning. It could be a teenage pregnancy and also young lovers (or both at the same time). Not a movie, but a classic Madonna video with a story :)
Yeah, not from a movie, it was absolutely about teen pregnancy and the choice to keep the child. This was very controversial in 1986, and one of her many socially impactful videos, they’re always mini movies.
Papa Don't Preach, I'm in trouble deep.... She is not talking about a baby boyfriend, she's talking about a baby child... I don't exactly think she's "in trouble deep" if she just liked a guy, right?
It’s not from a movie. Just great Madonna storytelling.
Yes thank you I was about to comment the same thing cause when she said that I was talking out loud no no absolutely not can I let anyone think that.

Yeah it’s not auto biographical
@@sillywilly7887 I was thinking she meant the character in the song was pregnant and didnt know how to tell her Dad, not Madonna herself.
His name is Danny Aiello.
The line where she says My friends keep telling me to give it up . Good message either way.
the 1986 video Live to Tell by her is great. So is Like a Prayer, of course and so many more.
This is a fun reaction. Hoping you react to more Madonna. She is a legendary artist.💙
More Madonna reactions please

I used to jam out to this song in my teenage years.
That was Danny Aiello as her dad.

It’s about teenage pregnancy
Towards the end - the last chorus - when she’s leaning agains the pillar, she’s looking at a pregnancy test.
