Lord of the Rings a movie during it's time that was thought impossible to film and had every major Hollywood studio reject it until New Line Cinema but ended up being a masterpiece of a trilogy and with Return of the King being the last movie to have swept the Oscar with 11-0 win tying Ben Hur and Titanic for most win at the Oscar. Even after 20 years it still holds up today.
It taught us to never do violence even stealing that kind of money it didn’t belong to anyone. It has darker tone and won 4 Oscars including best picture and best supporting actor: Javier Bardem.
I’m glad The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe made it on here. Disney did a good job with their adaptation. I liked Love, Simon more than its source material, and there were quite a few differences between the book and movie.
Only book read to me at school that I paid attention to and enjoyed. Wish I watched the movie when it was released. Got around to watching recently on Disney+ and I guess I'm too old for it now. Still an okay movie and had some nostalgia to it.
It's been tried adapting the entirety of the series before. BBC did a TV miniseries in the 80s. They made it through Silver Chair (book 4 if counting release order). Disney tossed their money at it and made it through Voyage of the Dawn Treader (3). Their adaptation for Silver Chair has been stuck in development since 2011. Netflix is up next with it's attempt at adapting the whole thing. We'll see...
1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy 2. Harry Potter franchise 3. The Hunger Games franchise 4. Dune 5. Little Women 6. Atonement 7. Life of Pi 8. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009) 9. Bridget Jones' Diary 10. American Psycho.
Cinema Therapy did a really great analysis of why everything about the relationship in The Notebook is completely toxic. How is The Martian an honorable mention?! It was fantastic!
Fun fact about holes: in the book Stanley actually starts out overweight and loses weight as he spends time in the camp. When it came to the move Luis Sachar LOVED Shia LaBeouf and WANTED him for the role of Stanley. However LaBeouf was skinny. Sachar ended up rewriting Stanley’s character for the movie because he refused to make a young child rapidly gain weight and lose it just for the movie, and he felt a fat suit would not look realistic enough. Sachar truly was a good guy when it came to making that movie!
WatchMojo, you forgot to mentioned Goosebumps though. That is also the best book to movie adaptations. It's even has it's 2 chapters of it's movies that starred Jack Black as R.L Stine itself. Not to forget the reboot of the Goosebumps shows that was aired back in 1995.
To me, Harry Potter is number one, but I get why LotR is number one in this list. My top 3 would be Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Pride & Prejudice, but I would've included somewhere in this list "Me Before You" and I think Twilight should be here too, despite a lot of people hate this story, it was pretty succesful... Now, can we have a list of Top 20 WORST book to movie adaptations of the century and talk about the disaster they did with THE HOST (Stephenie Meyer)? They completely ruined that story that I love so much and I still hold a grudge with that lol.
No Dune, No Country For Old Men, Nic Cage’s/Orlean’s Adaptation or The Green Knight? You might as well call this list top century young adult/romance adaptions instead cause I barely see this list broke out of those two genre’s.
Whoever created this list really loves romance and "YA" material, as except for #1 (an obvious choice) that's all that's represented here. I would hope there are other adaptations over the past couple of decades that don't slide into the classic "chick flick" genres.
Yep no Dune, Casino Royals, No Country For Old Men despite winning best screenplay, The Green Knight, nor Orlean’s Adaptation which the fact they even attempted to adapt that film is an achievement itself…
"Best book to movie adaptations made in this century." She mistakenly then says "books released since 2000" when I believe she meant to say movies released since 2000 -because there's multiple books like Pride & Predudice, Lord of the Rings, etc. on this list that sure the heck weren't written in this century! You must of overlooked them eh? Or did you not watch it?
R u effin’ kidding me?! No Divergent?!?! The last two might’ve strayed a bit from the book but the 1st movie was a solid adaptation to the first book & many book fans can agree to that!!!😤
Am I missing something that Fight Club was not mentioned??? And Dune??? And agree with everyone -- none of the Steven King Novels were mentioned??? Green Mile? ShawShank Redemption?
unpopular opinion but I hated the hunger games. It's based on a flawed premise, the side characters like Roo are so underdeveloped that it's impossible to care about them and the villains are 2D cliches
DIvergent movies got canceled after the actors all walked after third one boomed and they where told the second part of the third book was going to be a TV Movie and none of the actors stayed to finsh it as a result
Each of the adaptations I've seen I saw the films first, my elder brother despised the first 4 Harry Potter films since he read the books first then that changed with the 5th book and he preferred the adaptation. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy well he was certainly a fan of the books so he didn't hate the trilogy he just wasn't pleased witn some changes. Obviously The Lord Of The Rings films were my childhood. I liked the books but it was a difficult processes because I was so used to the films. I've only read the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book all the way through. The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe out of nostalgia I like the BBC mini series that's how I became familiar with the Narnia world and I like the film version for different reasons. I actually prefer Gone Girl the film since I only read the book afterwards.
We are all every fortunate that Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were adapted into movies when they where. It was done in a period where they could be adapted and before Hollywood took a hard turn into what it is today.
Everytime I watch a movie or a tv show from before that turn you've mentioned, I think the same thing, how many movies, stories, tv shows, would be ruined, changed or completely overlooked because of that turn?
no, not LORD OF THE RINGS: It did away with character and plot for visuals, leaving out too much of the text while throwing in new stuff that wasn't worth much.

John Hurt in 1984 or Watership Down 🐇🐰also with John Hurt
At 19:50 kiera knightly looks like that viral cat meme glaring before attacking it's victim 🤣🤣🤣
Mine is Spielbergs “ready player one” which didn’t even get a mention in the video 😢
How did Shawshank Redemption not make the list? I know it was only a novella, but it's the #1 movie on IMBD and is loved by everyone
I’m so glad to see Holes mentioned. It’s not only a great book/ movie but one of the most underrated live action Disney movies ever made.
I first saw Holes in summer school as a kid, the best summer movie of my life.
“You bow to no one.” Still hits me in the feels
I cry every time
Lord of the Rings a movie during it's time that was thought impossible to film and had every major Hollywood studio reject it until New Line Cinema but ended up being a masterpiece of a trilogy and with Return of the King being the last movie to have swept the Oscar with 11-0 win tying Ben Hur and Titanic for most win at the Oscar. Even after 20 years it still holds up today.
@supratrd900 it was as an animated film in the late 70's before, obviously I would call it more experimental.
New Line Cinema the house Freddy Kruger built.
No Country For Old Men was a great adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel by the Coen Brothers.
I liked Love, Simon more than its source material, and there were quite a few differences between the book and movie.
sad that they couldnt make it work further :(
I read the book in 3rd grade and fell completely in love with it, then when the movie came out it blew my mind!
Only book read to me at school that I paid attention to and enjoyed.
Wish I watched the movie when it was released. Got around to watching recently on Disney+ and I guess I'm too old for it now. Still an okay movie and had some nostalgia to it.

Netflix is up next with it's attempt at adapting the whole thing.
We'll see...
There are a lot of great book to movie adaptations but it was obvious what the top 2 were going to be. They are both so iconic.
1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy
2. Harry Potter franchise
3. The Hunger Games franchise
4. Dune
5. Little Women
6. Atonement
7. Life of Pi
8. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
9. Bridget Jones' Diary
10. American Psycho.
Cinema Therapy did a really great analysis of why everything about the relationship in The Notebook is completely toxic. How is The Martian an honorable mention?! It was fantastic!
Another lover of the cinema dads i see
I’ve always thought the relationship was toxic and I hate the movie and I’m glad Cinema Therapy proved me right 😂
Oh man I love that channel!!!
So much great content and their review of that film was so spot on!!!
I'm going to go check that out, thanks. I saw the movie once and didn't care for it. I thought it was bloody awful.
Good list. But I’d add Little Children, The Social Network , BlackKklansman, The Wolf of Wall Street and Killers of the Flower Moon
Great additions
My top 5 book to movies
5.The Twilight Saga
4. Outsiders
3. Star Wars novel base on the prequals original trilogy
2. Harry Potter
1. The Hunger Games
Did you look at the title of this video?
Fun fact about holes: in the book Stanley actually starts out overweight and loses weight as he spends time in the camp. So glad “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” was so high on the list. One of my favs and think it’s underrated, especially for the acting.
Atonement was an excellent adaption as well.
Casino Royale should also be mentioned on the list!
Yeah, it has to be the best modernising adaptation ever.
Perks movie got released when I was a freshman in high school and we had just finished reading the book
One of the few times WatchMojo has absolutely nailed the top spot
You forgot 2 important adaptations, that made tons of money twilight and it
Did you guys just forget No Country for Old Men?
Harry Potter franchise is my favorite ❤️
I also love The hunger Games and The perks of being a Wallflower
My favorite book adaptations are “Room” and “The Glass Castle”.
Also seem to have forgotten the maze runner franchise too
They are only doing movies and the two movies aren't based on books and the movie is story with references from the books.

Fantastic list!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
At 19:50 kiera knightly looks like that viral cat meme glaring before attacking it's victim 🤣🤣🤣

Why’d you have to show THAT SCENE from the lord of the rings. I’m in tears!!
Most of this selection was aimed at the young adult genre. Sideways should have been on this list.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! K-Pax (2001) and Big Fish (2003) were also good movie adaptations. 🤣
@BlenderStudy I don't quite get K-Pax. I find Big Fish bittersweet yet still one of Tim Burton's best films.
Yes they are!
James Sallis' DRIVE directed by Nicolas Winding Refn!
Charles Portis' TRUE GRIT + Coen Brothers, multiple Academy Awards!
No Dune, No Country For Old Men, Nic Cage’s/Orlean’s Adaptation or The Green Knight? You might as well call this list top century young adult/romance adaptions instead cause I barely see this list broke out of those two genre’s.

Yep no Dune, Casino Royals, No Country For Old Men despite winning best screenplay, The Green Knight, nor Orlean’s Adaptation which the fact they even attempted to adapt that film is an achievement itself…
Yeah totally biased list. Should be retitled best YA book to movie adaptations
Holes was the first novel I read when I was a freshman in high school, and I loved it.
"Incredible source material." Then came The Rings of Power. Haha
Awesome list
Although not great literature, nor great films, the Twilight franchise had quite an impact at the time.
Bridge To Terabithia shocked those who did not read the book.
No Dune? Really? At least you guys got it right by putting LotR in first place
I know, right! Dune deserves to be up there!
Dune is so boring
@skylinksdev8858 It might be a bit early since the one from this century is a two parter maybe even 3.
Not in the time frame for the video but should be I'll think with the remake that it just needs to fully be completed which is soon
@@strwrbttlfrnt Exactly my point.
Amazing video watch mojo of favourite books that adaptation into movies, fantastic job. I love the hunger games franchises.
Blake Lively before her nose job looks so much different!
Interview with the Vampire w/ Brad Pitt and Tom Cruse was the best adaption of all time, in my opinnion. Hands down!
Hunger games is my favorite book series and movies!!!!!
You forgot"
Black Hawk Down
We Were soldiers
Not sure if these didn’t qualify for this list for some reason…but no “Game of Thrones”? No “Handmaid’s Tale”? No “No Country For Old Men”? Ouch…
Look at the title of this video.
Two of those aren't even movies.
The Fault in our Stars is my favorite by far. OK😢.
What about
" DOCTER SLEEP" !!!!
No Country For Old Men won multiple Academy Awards!
Cormac McCarthy + Coen Brothers?? Should've been #1.
wrong century
"Best book to movie adaptations made in this century." You did this one right WM!
Every author's dream. Including myself. Though, I haven't published yet, lol.
"Ron No!" you guys knew what you were doing by starting it with that scene.
you missed the most resent adaptation of Dune
Little Women 2019 not being on the list is ridiculous
Stand By Me should be on this list!
@gusfernanddes Last century.
@@josh72456 oh youre right, sorry, my mistake!
Not a single mention of Denis Villeneuve's DUNE. Ok...
@ethannaftalin2395 I kind of get it.
Highly agree with TLOTR being #1
R u effin’ kidding me?!
No Divergent?!?!
The last two might’ve strayed a bit from the book but the 1st movie was a solid adaptation to the first book & many book fans can agree to that!!!😤
Fight Club? The Book Thief? Winter’s Bone? No Country for Old Men? The Help? The Road? The Lovely Bones? Carol? The Talented Mr Ripley?
I feel like Speak should have been on this list.
Room is one of my favorite movies! It's soo good!
You forgot to notice Battle Royale.
Or in case you make another show about foreign movies with their books also
"Call me by your name" of course watchmojo would list a movie about child grooming on their best century list because it fits the lgbt narrative.
GOD I LOVE HOLES. It’s so freaking good.
Am I missing something that Fight Club was not mentioned???
And Dune???
And agree with everyone -- none of the Steven King Novels were mentioned??? Green Mile? ShawShank Redemption?
Fight Club, Green Mile, and Shawshank are from the 1900s. The list was talking about movies from this century.
@seanbarry4019 Too early for Dune I think.
now you need to do book to tv
I personally felt underwhelmed by the HP movie adaptations. Left out tons of details and messed up a lot of characters.
Twilight was not listed😢
Good. The movies are garbage
The Lord of The Rings always takes number 1.
@xaviercaatro6173 Obvious.
Where is Stephen Kings it
unpopular opinion but I hated the hunger games. It's based on a flawed premise, the side characters like Roo are so underdeveloped that it's impossible to care about them and the villains are 2D cliches
I would of loved the Divergent movies to have been here, plus i loved the Horns movie.
DIvergent movies got canceled after the actors all walked after third one boomed and they where told the second part of the third book was going to be a TV Movie and none of the actors stayed to finsh it as a result
#1: Holes needs to be higher.
#2: How did the Hunger Games miss the top 5??
Wow Amazing
Not including Adaptation, or Dune is WILD. Like not even mentioned lol
people are saying this should have been higher i wouldve put that lower im just happy percy jackson isnt on the list
Fight club? Virgin suicides?...
I remember I was an eighth grade I seen the adult film parody, lord of the G strings before I saw Lord of the rings
I wish and I hope they make a remake of the lord of the rings movie trilogy game on all consoles
legends of the Fall
No love for Casino Royale...
Not even an honorable mention to the Maze Runner series!?
No Twilight ????? 😅
I think IT parts 1 and 2 shouldn't be overlooked...
Jurassic Park!! Based on a book and still an incredible Movie
Wrong century 🙂

I love "Holes" the book!
You just HAD to use that clip for the end of the video didn't you? #CriesEveryDamnTime
No Bridget Jones Diary?!

Twilight
Ummm, Shawshank Redemption? Green Mile?
wrong century
LOTR better be #1 ❤
It's kind of a funny story and Ender's Game.....Redwall is also due
really? harry potter? the movies are only about 1/10th the quality of the books, and goblet of fire is a dumpster fire.
Me: Watches the video, doesn't recognize/care about anything except Narnia and Lord of the Rings
Also me: Writers have gotten much worse it seems.
I wrote a book.
no, not LORD OF THE RINGS: It did away with character and plot for visuals, leaving out too much of the text while throwing in new stuff that wasn't worth much.
Lord Of the rings❤
I was going to be very very annoyed but no, they did put to the Lord of the rings at the top. :-)
is maze runner not a book adaptation then
