      From what I've seen of the trailer and understand about the plot Artemis is a good guy, the Fey are evil and preparing to invade the human world, and Julius Root is being cast as a woman for some diversity points means that they basically ruined the character arcs for both of the lead characters and have turned Artemis Fowl into another generic YA fantasy hero's journey story.

    Percy jackson deserves better. How about a cgi or animated series. That way you can make the characters look younger without using child actors. You can also have greater effects and stick closer to the books.

      To say Hollywood is adverse to animation outside of kids films is an understatement. Like most things in tinsel-town, it comes down to actors and their cohorts being ill-fitted and out matched in the medium; in the voice acting department and adverse to media that doesn't visually capture the actor in question.

    The Princess Bride movie doesn’t simply remove the book’s framing device. It actually plays off of it to create a new framing device that compliments the book! In the movie the grandfather reads the book to the kid. In the book the kid is grown up and searches for the book only to find his grandfather only read him ‘the good parts’. It’s literally a book-movie combo that deals with adaptation! 😃

    • @MarchingGrrl

      The way I always saw it was the book involved a man who used to have his father read a heavily abridged version of TPB to him as a child. The book protagonist only realizes that the version he heard was abridged when he tries to give the original book to his own young son and the kid can’t make it past the first chapter.
      I always headcannon Ed that the movie version is what if the book protagonist’s father went directly to his grandkid and skipped the middleman.

With regards to fiction, it denoted a story 'written or recited, of the adventures of a knight, hero, etc.' Given that many of the chivalric romances of the Middle Ages included 'love conquers all' themes, that's what the term has come to mean in the modern age, but you *can* still have a 'romance' that doesn't include a love story.

Disney made an adaptation of it in the 60s that was also set in Canada, then made the reboots in the 90s/2000s. Biggest differences included changing the dog breeds and setting in the reboot and having the animals "talk." In the 60s film there is no animal talking, but there is a narrator. I grew up on the 60s film and still really like it, although some of the human acting is truly painful 😂 the music though is amazing!

    My personal favorite adaptation has got to be The Lord of the Rings, I adore all 3 movies and i am certainly fond of J.R.R Tolkiens books but they can be so hard to get through at times. I've always thought that his greatest strength was his immensely huge and interesting world building as opposed to his story telling. The movies made a lot of great decisions in what to cut out of the story while keeping a nice balance of interesting and coherent.

    • @brooksboy78
      @brooksboy78 3 роки тому +4

      Tolkien's storytelling intentionally mirrors classical epics like "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" and his characters emulate those found in medieval romances like "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "King Horn." It isn't written like a modern novel at all nor was it ever meant to be, which is why some readers find it hard to read. The movies are extremely modernized, which is why you probably find them a lot easier to digest. I think Tolkien achieves a level of ancientry and mythic power through his archaic writing style, but it's also nice that other people can experience the story who aren't satisfied by that method of storytelling.

    • @Cailus3542

      @@brooksboy78 Eh. I think that you're giving Tolkien a tad more praise than he deserves, at least for his prose. I enjoy his writing style for the most part, to be sure, but Tolkien did have a distinct tendency to ramble and little concept of pacing or moderation, often becoming so involved with his own world that he didn't account for the reader as much as he perhaps could've. It's one of the (slightly) weaker aspects of an extraordinary work of literature.

    Fun fact about the Coraline adaptation: the band They Might Be Giants was initially hired to make music for the film, wrote up a bunch of songs, and then the filmmakers decided to scrap all but the song that Other Father sings to Coraline, siting that the music wasn’t “creepy enough.” The band has since released one of the songs they’d initially written for the film. It’s called “Careful What You Pack” and can be found on the album titled The Else. It’s a pretty damn good song, though I can see how it wasn’t what the filmmakers were going for.

    I can’t believer how long I’ve been watching this channel and I still love it. Five years and going strong. What I would love to see is an LiA for a Holes because I think it’s one of the closest adaptations I’ve ever seen. And on the opposite side, my worst adaptation is The Spiderwick Chronicles. Thanks Dom!

    I was almost scared Howl's Moving Castle would be on here. But at this point I think an accurate book adaptation would need at least 2+ movies, plus a way to get all that inner monologue on screen. People might complain about the ghibli movie, but I think it got the basic idea down rather well and I love them both to bits.

Same with Vampire Academy. Those were books I l o v e d and the movie felt like a mean high school dramatization of what those books really were. As for Beautiful Creatures... they kinda just threw the book in the trash. One of my all-time favorite movies and books are the Divergent series. The first Divergent film was like someone reading the books to you. I would rank that one extremely high on the best list.
