  • In this video I'm going to try and fix this PlayStation 3
    Note on the the PS3
    First problem - When playing games it will freeze within 10 mins then make me rebuild database still plays DVDs fine but nothing else been doing this for about 1 month
    Second problem - PS3 no longer starts up. when switching on it beeps 3 time then switches itself off. DVD still wont eject
    ( Disc inside is Firefly Disc 1 )
    When I started it up it ran for about 5 minutes with the fan going then stop then had a flashing red light and the DVD was not in there when I started taking it apart
    I'm not sure what the other person did when trying to fix other than clean the side

      The PS3 in particular was ridiculously powerful for its time, there were articles talking about how it was like a supercomputer.

      @@calzonemaniacsvideocorner0804 actually it still is a supercomputer in its own regard. I dont see such big strides between 3 and 4 to 2 to 3, to be honest even ps5 games maybe still could play on the ps3 nowadays

    I'm definitely going to try this! Yesterday, my neighbor decided to throw away his old PS3, and 5 minutes later, I rescued it. When I tried to turn it on, I got the YLOD. I've done a lot of research, and this seems like the best option for me. Changing the capacitors is too complicated for me, and only 11% of the time the problem is actually there. And obviously, doing the Frankenstein mod or something similar is beyond my budget and skills.
    So, I'll try to save it this way, and if I manage to get it to boot up, I'll install a custom firmware as soon as possible to keep the fan running at 90-100% all the time and hope it lasts as long as possible. What hurts the most is that I'll be the first one to remove the warranty sticker 😫

    • @GGoblin1
      @GGoblin1 11 місяців тому +3

      YLOD can be caused by different issues. Read the syscon chip and retrieve the fault codes.

    • @medanyutu
      @medanyutu 11 місяців тому +1

      @@GGoblin1 I know, but the thing is I don't want to spend a single penny on this repair. Honestly, I have another perfectly functioning PS3 slim, and in the model I've obtained (CECHG04), 50% of the YLOD cause is attributed to the RSX. I know using syscon is the best way to detect the problem, but it doesn't even get past the self-check, which strongly suggests it's the RSX.

      Good luck my friend if the first time being open up the will find alot of dust in there my next step was to change the capacitors a good video for this is on TronicsFix if you decided to try it out and thank you for watching

      @medanyutu 10 місяців тому +4

      @@techrestoread After the entire afternoon and night, I can say with complete joy that the repair has been successful!
      The part that took the most time was extracting the information from the syscon, and it showed errors 3034 and 4412. No capacitor failure, just an issue with the main chips, so it's time for a reflow.
      Using a 2000W heat gun, I have slightly reduced the times. 3 minutes of heat, apply flux, 4 minutes of heat, 30 minutes of rest, and flipping it to finish with 5 minutes of heat on the backside, followed by another 30 minutes to cool down. IMPORTANT! Keep the board level by placing something underneath it. If it's uneven, the solder points could shift from their position.
      Now, reassemble it, and it's ready! Tomorrow, I'll open it up again for a more thorough cleaning and, finally, install a custom firmware to make sure it can handle whatever comes its way.
      Thank you very much for everything!

    Remember to replace the thermal paste between the heat spreaders and the dies as well...that's the main cause of overheating. People put MX5 on the CPU/GPU, reattach the heat sinks and think job done...but there's still 16 year old dry paste that's turned to powder underneath the heat spreaders.

    • @tco7pt
      @tco7pt 10 місяців тому +3

      The mx5 thermal paste is defective and it got recalled, mx6 replaced mx5. Not only that, reflowing the PS3 like he did there will only serve as a temporary fix, as the gpu should be completely replaced or otherwise, it will ylod once again

    I had a fat model PS3 that died on me in 2015 or 2016. I had the YLOD. It's a shame because I liked that console. It wasn't backwards compatible with PS2 games because it was a later model but I liked it. I ended up calling Playstation customer service and sent it in, and they gave me a super slim model which I still have

    I have the same problem with mine it has ylod the proper repair is to reball the PS3 and restore it by changing the thermal pads, CMOS battery and the problem is caused by
    The GPU so you should just change it to a 65 nm or a 40 nm GPU from a PS3 slim and upgrade to a ssd and delid it

    Without Frankenstein mod it is matter of time for YLOD to apear. It needs delid at least and extra preasure on cheramic on both rsx and cell. Then webman to set fan to 34% and keep it under 70C in games.

    Its not ylod the cpu is overheating you need to delid the cpu and the gpu if you want to ,that would fix that problem at the beginning and also the rsx on the console is good because if its bad the screnn would have artifacts,or the console would have glod or ylod

    That PlayStation 3 reminds me of arcade machines it keeps on breaking over and over I gave up on them I bought the fat and slim models instead that couldn’t play PS2 games who wants to play PS4 games on their PS5 so it will break I think the PS4 has taught me playing backwards compatible games breaks the consoles cause the PS4 never broke once but my Xbox one did break cause I was playing original Xbox and Xbox 360 games also but not the PS4 cause it doesn’t let me play anything but PS4 I’ll do the same to my PS5 never play anything but PS5 games had since the day it launched abd still not broken

      Bro what? If you broke an Xbox One in the first place, you have a serious problem of taking care of your stuff. The ratio of PS4 to repair vs Xbox One's to repair most repair shops are like 6 to 1. You can look around and you'll see for yourself that Microsoft made the Xbox One almost immortal.

      Unfortunately the main cause is the original gpu being defective out of the factory during that era of chips known as bumpgate. You will have to get a Frankenstein done as even getting it to startup again it will just get a ylod again
