From the very first note their timing was tight as hell. Men at the top of their game right there. Brings a smile to my face everytime I listen to it. Love it!!
As a bluegrass bassist this video speaks to me on a spiritual level. The guitarist whispering chord progressions to you between tunes, instinctively telling the band leader you know the song when asked, quite obviously shaking your head no when he turns back around, the face at 3:26 when a break is tossed on you, looking around frantically in the middle of the kickoff for someone to tell you the key, hoping to god nothing weird happens harmonically while you just pray that we stay on the I chord for awhile, watching the guitarists hand intently.... If you've ever wondered what it's like to play bass in a bluegrass band, this is it.
@@dobroanjo I mean, watch the beginning of the video -- Chris whispers some instructions to Paul -- presumably, key, chords, song structure -- Paul nods yes, and as soon as Chris turns back around, Paul shakes his head "no" at the audience. :) We've all been there. Of course Paul's fine, because you're absolutely right, it's a super simple song.
Tony. He should know the key and chords. It's what they just played only sped up. lol. You make a good point though. Sometimes ya just gotta hang on for dear life! ty
Sometimes, while listening to them masterliterally every style they play, you forget that at there core they are probably the greatest bluegrass band in the world!!!!
The Punch Brothers are even loved and adored by teenagers who do not realize that they are __BLUEGRASS. In fact, my granddaughter said on Twitter that all she wanted was all the Punch Brothers recordings to make her happy. She's a senior in high school. The person who told me about The Punch Brothers and The Sleepy Man Banjo Boys is a DJ and Producer in Denver, Colorado. Her husband is in Germany. Prayers would be appreciated for Ramona & Gerald.
Wow!!I don't think the grass gets much bluer than this!!!! Chris Thile has great vocal ability, to say the least. These dudes can really tear it up!!! Thank you so much for putting this up on UA-cam!😃
My guess is that he's gotten so good that the stuff he plays on stage is the stuff he's comfortable with. So what sounds like amazing stuff to us is just "Meh, no big" stuff to him. I'm pretty sure flies on the wall of his practice space drop dead when they hear some of the stuff he plays then.
Incredible performance. Love the fiddler on Train 45. Only gripe is the sound setup seems muffled/muted, it's not capturing the RING of the banjo, which to me is the soul of Bluegrass.
I can't read, never learned how to write, my whole life has been, one big fight. born under a bad sign... no coincidence that the blues and bluegrass share a color.
I picked with Noam Pikelny once at Beanblossom for a couple hours (before I knew WHO he was). I think he may have been hitting on me cuz he told me afterwards that...."I have a nice voice".....In my mind we're practically married. :-) bahahaha!
@corkeraustin24.. "Never seen a male vocalist brave enough to attempt the material he covers." ??? Hahaha! That's hilarious- and frankly one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. There's a lot of material out there buddy. Your comment is beyond invalid.
When Train 45 kicks in, it hits me harder than bourbon at 2am. That’s some insane musicianship right there!
Thanks my kind of music

He knows the chords fine this song is simple not sure what you mean every bluegrass player knows it especially paul

YES.
@@samuelbarham8483 I never noticed that before!
As a Bassist I think Paul Kowert is Unbelievable!

Love to see the guitar picker isn't right hand lazy, he's driving that down lick..

My husband drove me from Richmond to Raleigh to see them perform back in 2011. One of my best birthdays ever!
mandolin player doesn't miss a note what a BEAST!
he has never missed a note!
Still one of the best videos on youtube
The looks on the faces of the audience said it all. Incredible talent.
That bass solo is completely deadly.
I really appreciate the talent of these guys, but I especially love when they play bluegrass.
best mandolin player ever. bar none
I love a good double bass solo.. :)
Train 45 starts at 4:24 for those interested
thanks, why im here
I love the fact that Paul doesn't even know either of these songs. So funny. :)
It must have been filmed not too long after he'd joined PB. I can imagine it was quite a learning curve!
In the running for the best bluegrass video on UA-cam...
My favorite part is the glimpse of that girl's face at 5:10. Says it all.
That's actor Sigourney Weaver
dang that is some fantastic picking!.. and what a bass solo! Thanks for sharing!
The mandolin solo was so good he forgot his next verseXD
Just amazingly good!
Thanks for this .. sure makes for a smile and some instrument grabbing !! Who cannot grab up what ya play and pick along ??
I got 99 years is a classic bluegrass song . love it !!!
Sigourney Weaver at 05:11 ty for gr8 music.
Yup ...n that's it. World class playin and great entertainers.
the look on the girls face @5:10 is priceless
Outstanding. I'm hoping to see these guys live sometime.

Outstanding !🌟, In their natural prime!!💥
That mandolin player is Chris Thile and I do not believe he has ever missed a note. In. His. Life.
I heard him miss a note once, but he was playing guitar.
He was out of key for a bit...
sick effin stand up bass solo...
Fantastic band and Noam is unstoppable
Ya did good guys! Thanks for keepin' the faith...
I love this song!
Very very nice up close video.

Dat bass...holy crap!
Musicianship is crazy here.
This video summarizes pretty much everything I love about Chris Thile. XD
i literally cried this was so good
Great rendition of 99 Years and one dark day! I only wish I could have been there in person! Thanks soooo much for posting this awesome video!
So awesome.
With this much talent in one band and with the added aggravation of them being so young, I am of the opinion anti-trust laws possibly should apply!
Plus que magnifique ! Bravo a tous!
I can't read, never learned how to write, my whole life has been, one big fight. born under a bad sign... no coincidence that the blues and bluegrass share a color.
Great job
La grande classe !!!
Amazing!
Man, that's HOT.
The whole crowd goes falsetto with him... lol
Wonderfull
everyone in the crowd is just in complete shock of whats happening! Even on this side of the computer I was right there with them!
I picked with Noam Pikelny once at Beanblossom for a couple hours (before I knew WHO he was). I think he may have been hitting on me cuz he told me afterwards that...."I have a nice voice".....In my mind we're practically married. :-) bahahaha!
there is 7 people with no taste in music.. who could dislike this
Was it Utah Phillips who said of Chris "That boy can sang." True that. Love that boy's voice.
Brongaene Griffin Doc Watson I believe. There's a vid on here somewhere...
Brongaene Griffin it's Chris thiles "Bury me beneath the willow" & it was Doc Watson!
It's cute when Doc says that in the one video because I remember thinking that it was interesting how surprised he seemed....
5:10 says it all
Bass solo :)
great cover of a great song, timing perfect and not a duff note between them. check out a cover of the same song by Jamie Beale
@BlueBassBoss While I'm no fan of the Sherman Act, yours is perhaps the best argument in favor of it that I've ever seen!
chris eldridge has gotten so fucking good! hell yeah!
good job boys
My Oh My. What a performance...!(×n)
Wow!!
Noam Pikelny is my hero.
Yup. Me 2
Saw him play music with John C Reilly. Amazing day.
I love these guys none better they are all. Excellent players and Pickers !!!!!!!
@@steelmillwill ok
I saw pickles move his fingers at the beginning!!!
is that michael moore in the audience (4:02)?? awesome.
Yessirs! 🪕
If he did. he meant it.
Was that Lori Loughlin (Full House) at the 5:58 mark?
Woah
Nice tempo on Train 45
so.....fast.....
All the women in the crowd looked like they were nervous to sing about that 44….I kinda get it tho lol!
its refreshing to see hipsters play music I actually like. gives me a little faith in humanity.
Punch Brothers isn't really hipsters playing bluegrass, so much as it is bluegrass musicians playing hipster [music]
Those clean shaven folk, hipsters? Noam, Gabe, Paul, Chris E. and Chris Thile, hipsters? You're out of your mind.
Klaus Ebner Chris Thile is about as far from a conservative look as you can get
Super noam
is that michael moore @ 4:02? haha
Okay.....Umm....I've never seen anyone blow ham chunks out their nose till just now when my twisted (banjo playin') hubby read your comment.
@kyle0127 Instrumentally, yes. Vocally-not a chance.
michael moore at 4:02?
wow
that banjo sounds to hollow but i guess thats what everybody likes now really high tail piece i like em half an inch of the head
Heck.
Im not sure anybody realized what just happened at the end...
...that looks like Laurelyn Dossett in the front row...
Who's the dude on banjo?
Noam PIkelny
I remember this song from an old Hot Rize CD I had. Punch does it better
No Chris... its actually your kick
You mean "break".
yee haa yass umm
They aren't slouches in the vocal department- all their harmonies are very well done. But they're a long way from the best in bluegrass singing.
F ME SIDEWAYS!!!!?? 🥴👍
This looks and sounds like some psychedelic fungus is involved.
Audio is nice, but the camera person should really learn about zooming out and not focusing on nose hair...
@corkeraustin24.. "Never seen a male vocalist brave enough to attempt the material he covers." ??? Hahaha! That's hilarious- and frankly one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. There's a lot of material out there buddy. Your comment is beyond invalid.
Chris Thile's playing makes me sick
Watching feminist listen to this song with fake smiles plastered on their faces is PRICELESS.
a lot of notes but no soul -- just a joke from a home-schooled nose-picker
God, as an amazing picker Thile is- he should DEFINITELY not sing. just stop... now... So irritating and ball-less.
No. Just no. Most people enjoy listening to the man, so perhaps you should just stop listening.
Dude. You have no idea what you're talking about. The man can sing. His range is incredible. Perhaps you really should just stop listening.
+Brad Tucker yeah...no...
He's probably a better singer than you mate.
