I have always learned faster and better by watching the games being fought on the tabletop and watching the die roles used in addition to the unit cards being shown. I never fail to get interrupted while reading an article! Thank You for all your hard work and videos.
Very helpful and well put together video! One thing I think you have got wrong, self defence AA means that he can fire even if not fired upon, but only at rof1..
I wish there was more variety in the types of aircraft available. Having just one per faction is fairly repetitive. I was looking through my old first edition rulebook (I never played 1e) and it seems that you could buy fighters that would fight enemy attack aircraft (via a simple die roll). It was years ago, but I also remember the old Warhammer Epic 40K game had rules for interceptors that could intercept attacking bombers. That was a great game.
I agree more aircraft options would be cool but most of them would functionally be pretty similar. 1st edition was interesting, though I never played it either, but in that version there was a chance for friendly fire, nothing like your expensive plane blowing up your expensive tank! Fighters are think would be a mixed bag. They really only come into play if there are enemy aircraft otherwise you are just wasting points.
I second that opinion, being able to have a couple of FW-190s, Bf 109s, mustangs or spitfires would make for some interesting games. D-day Germany in particular has a lot of ground AA but no aircraft, and while it's true that the allies dominated the skies over Normandy, the Axis still flew their aircraft... also Me262s would be an interesting (and probably irritating for your opponent) addition to a late war list
Thanks for the nive how to play. I think the sturmoviks are really powerful with their 5 power rating on top armour. Where is stated that they don't have the penalty for being just 1-2 artillery battery? Thanks.
Great video series, very much appreciated as I'm about to get into playing Flames of War. A very noob question, can an army list, let's say from one of the D-Day books play against an army from another book/setting i.e, Bagration...
Sure, the only real limitation would be playing a Late War book versus a Mid War book as points are differently scaled. (i.e. the Tiger in Mid War is much more expensive then late war.)
A question we had that I don’t think was addressed was; some units are listed as “fighter/bomber” IIRC the P-47 for instance. If the allied unit has them in support, can they also contribute to defensive fire if the axis had stukas attacking?
Excellent video John, as I'm finally getting the hang of the rules for version 4, but the aircraft rules are somewhat vague even by the rule book standards (IMO). This video makes sense. I'm running 2 Spitfires IX to support my Allied force. Unit cards not readily available (did not come with the models), so would be interested if you have a source where I could review that detail. FOW site does have some basic hit and AT scores (when they first released the model) but no is hit on and save data. Welcome your views sir.
Just got bit by the Team Yankee bug again (thanks to you!) and wondering if a series like this for Team Yankee is something you could do? Maybe a much more streamlined series that highlights whats different from Flames of War?
Awesome video… I would assume that the rockets 🚀 work like the direct fire cannon just with a lesser ROF but a bigger punch… also I was wondering if you could explain the difference in FOW aircraft and Team Yankee Aircraft… if the rules are the same ??? And in Team Yankee Helicopters are they a in and out like the Jets or are they just deployed and stay on the field till end of the game or destroyed???
Rockets are typically treated as a type of bombardment like bombs, but sometimes they have a farther range. For example the rockets on the American P-47 have a 12" range and bombs are 6". Team yankee Helos are kind of a combo Aircraft/ tank unit. You don't have to roll for them like aircraft, they have unlimited movement and you can fly them off and on the board if you want or just leave them on the table from turn to turn.
@@AllMiniaturesGreatandSmall thanks… that clarifies quite a bit of my confusion.. I can see all my army lists for Team Yankee in the future containing helicopters…. As they can come and go and I don’t have to roll them in every turn… As for flames I’m currently without an opponent so my Sherman’s are kinda on hold… without paint jobs… But P-47s would be my aircraft… as soon as I find an opponent
So, in the case of dropping bombs, it's the same thing the models are hit with 1 plane or 2 planes, right? What matters is that the target will be under the template! If so, it's allway better to drop bombs than MG/ canon fire...
Bombs or guns really depend on the target and exactly how much you can get under the template. For example, you'd probably want to use a bomb with a high firepower against dug in infantry or gun teams. But if they are not dug in then it's better to go for guns.
As a British player (late war) its possible for me to have 2 aircraft units in my list. An Auster OP and 2x Typhoons. My question is, when I roll for aircraft do I roll for each unit or just once for both?
Can AA that fired in its turn, then conduct AA fire against the planes in the opponents turn? I’m thinking about 88s that fired at armour in the German turn could they then shoot at the planes in the Russian turn?
They sure can, they just can't fire on their subsequent turn. So German turn 1 the 88 fires at my tank, on Soviet turn 1 the 88 fires on my Stumovic. At that point the 88 can not fire on German turn 2. Hope this helps.
In previous versions of the game you only had one model aircraft and rolled a special Airplane die that would indicate if 1,2 or 3 planes arrived. You would put the die in the holder so your opponent could tell the number of planes.
@@AllMiniaturesGreatandSmall Jeez. The pettiness of some people! I ould understand it if you were using some really notable track from a band / musician but this......🤔
Aircraft can split when they come on to the table. As long as they are firing direct fire weapons (cannons, MG) they are free to choose different targets at different places. Same penalties apply for being out of command. The leader shoots normally while the other plane gets a +1 to hit (eg. 5+ instead of 4+). They can not use template weapons though since in order to bombard all teams must join in on the same bombardment.
Why is this video not in the How to play Flames of war-playlist? It’s really a great help that should be shared!

No Problem! Glad we can help!

Good catch! I'm still stuck on V3 for some things.
Nice. Keep doing this kind of good content !

Hi, I'm not sure what Forces book has Spitfires. Where are you seeing them? I know of Typhoons, Hurricanes and P-40s but don't recall Spits anywhere.

Yes, I do. A lot of the sam principals apply but I will eventually make some dedicated TY vids as well.
@@AllMiniaturesGreatandSmall This would be highly (!) appreciated :)
Guys any thoughts on my Spitfire question of 5 days ago?

Actually you can take 3 platoons of aircraft by using the p47 as your allied platoon

What is the dice hole for?

Was the intro supposed to be audioless?
Sorry, yes. I got hit with a spurious copywrite claim on that music and I haven't replaced it yet.

On my table if one chooses can split up air attacks rather than attack the same target. Home rule.

Only one plane attack? Sure? Thought I got 2 attacks one with each plane
Where is the rule about planes being or two or less for bombardments ?
It's a special rule regarding the bombs. Page 93 of the little rulebook
