    I’m a former Taiwanese army corporal, served in what you described as “worst conditioned” frontline infantry unit(2008~2010), and I can confirm the lack of men power was real. Our post had an amazing amount of weapons manned by pathetically few men. From memory, there were 30 rifles, 10 22 caliber machine guns, 6 30 caliber machine guns, 2 50 caliber Browning M2, 2 Mk19 grenade launchers, 3 artillery pieces and tons of food and bottled water, manned by 15 soldiers, NCOs, and one lieutenant.

    The career-orientated culture is also very real. TSMC and the semiconductor industry are both the best and the worst thing that could happen to Taiwan, as the entire country's industry and culture are warped due to how lucrative the semiconductor industry is. It actively discourages young men from entering other career paths, which includes military and other essential industries.

      Taiwan is facing a demographic CRISIS (South Korea's is apocalyptic too) with their 1.2 fertility rate which is compounded by about 20% of their men not registering for citizenship due to conscription fears (which is why they are getting rid of it to try to fool parents to register their sons back into their system) and it was a desperate move because conscription will NOT be enough. Current military ages have about 150,000 men per year while Taiwan is only having about 65,000 born per year. Taiwan delusionally thought it could get more soldiers in the longterm by trying to keep soldiers for 30 years as professional soldiers. Didn't work. Turns out westernization and feminism and emasculation destroys societies. Who woulda thought? Taiwan will go from 180,000 soldiers today and 2.3 million reserves to down to 100,000 or less soldiers and only 1 million old reservists in about 25 to 30 years time. In 50 years, it would be even worse, though Taiwan likely will have either turned into a dictatorship to reverse the trend or been conquered by then as Taiwan would basically have no defenders and be wide open.
      South Korea is facing an even worse cliff, with their 0.79 fertility rate that is totally apocalyptic. They will lose about 70% of their military age males in the next 25 years. Meanwhile North Korea is seeing this so they just launched efforts this month to force their unmarried women to get married and pump out babies (they even banned their biggest source of GDP, the remittances from China, by banning unmarried childless women from going to China to work, even though it will hurt their GDP, they are now laser focused on boosting fertility rate so they can take advantage of South Korea's demographic fall, i.e. if South Korea loses 70% of their military age males and North Korea can boost theirs by 50%, then a conventional war starts looking a lot rosier for Kim Jong Un).

    Taiwan military service used to be very tough. I’m from Singapore and in the 80s went to Taiwan for military exercise as a conscript. We rent facilities and land use in Taiwan but do not interact with ROC military. At the time their weaponry are outdated but their conscripts were training were a lot tougher, their facilities medieval and the food horrid. Most troops were still using M14, and we even passed a convoy of M42 AA tanks! Their infantry were not equipped with LMG, grenade launchers or LAW.

    • @Methyll
      @Methyll 2 роки тому +17

      that was back when the ROC military is still heavily influenced by the late Chiang Kei Shek's military asperation and doctrine. But as Taiwan democratized and lean more into an independent country rather than unification and defeating the PRC, the strict military doctrines in the ROC were quickly thrown out, as ROK under the new administrations looked strictly to just a defensive war with heavy reliance on US.

    • @therover65
      @therover65 2 роки тому +17

      @@Methyll there was also a degree of “giving up” as China greatly expanded its military capabilities from the 90s. In the 80s the Taiwanese still felt they could counter a PLA attack. But as the disparity grew, Taiwanese increasingly saw it as a lost cause and therefore saw military service a waste of time. This sentiment led to the government first saying they will scrap all conscription, and then keeping conscription but at a paltry 4 months.

    • @TexanIndependence
      @TexanIndependence Рік тому

      @@therover65 The real problem is that westernization and feminism have destroyed Taiwan's fertility rate, which is one of the lowest in the world at 1.2, which means they will go from their current 150,000 military age males per year, to 65,000 military age males per year which is their current rate being born this year if they don't turn dictatorial and beat down feminism (highly unlikely). South Korea's rate is even worse, they spent $200 billion to try to raise their fertility rate (equivalent GDP to if US govt spent $3 trillion) and yet it actually FELL further from 0.81 to 0.79 now, which is beyond apocalyptic. Taiwan will lose about 58% of it's military age males in the next 25 years, but South Korea will lose 70%+. It's so bad that North Korea suddenly perked up this month and started a new program of punishments for unmarried childless women (they just started banning them from working in China despite those remittances being a huge part of N.Korean GDP) all to try to get them to birth more kids (if they boost their rate, they could increase their army by like 50% while South Korea shrinks 70% so then North Korea could even win a conventional invasion in a few decades).
      Point is, there is no need for a war now if China and North Korea can boost their fertility rates, then they can win likely without a fight in 25 to 35 years. China just woke up to it too, they went from 1 child to 2 child to unlimited child policy and now they've started rolling out test programs to force unmarried spinsters to get married. One province was trying to force spinsters to marry rural farmers but the feminist backlash caused them to relent, and still too many chinese simps who think there isn't a problem yet or others who think mass importing brides from southeast asia is the solution (the problem with that is there aren't 300 million females for them to import or even take via conquest, people talk about the 50 million lack of females but don't realize it's really a 300 million gap problem because of feminism in China similar to S.Korea/Taiwan means another 250 million females will either produce 0 or at most 1 kid which is not enough unless they take "extreme" measures that will make feminists screech).
      To be fair, much of the West has this problem too. The USA thinks immigration will solve it's fertility issues too but foreign-born naturalized citizens are 4x less likely to serve in the army which is actually a big part of why the US is failing to hit it's recruitment numbers aside from too many being obese and going woke discouraging others. The problem is even worse for Europe. Some hilarious leftists have tried to say Japan and South Korea can solve their demographic problems by mass importing third world immigrants which is so hilariously stupid but they have to suggest it rather than admit feminism is causing the downfall of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. It's so idiotic though, it's not like South Korea can import 10 million Somalians to solve it's demographic crisis and then expect those Somalians to fight and die fighting North Koreans. They would just flee elsewhere or return home instead. Besides at that point it wouldn't even be South Korea anymore, it'd be New Somalia and might become an ally of the commies rather than fight them.

    Currently Taiwanese wealth is dependent on a productive workforce. Wealth can arm their military. Militaries are a deficit, and the only indirect positive they have is that they provide stability to keep wealth generating, but there comes a point of diminishing returns. The Taiwanese method of conscription and training needs to be reformed to keep up with modern expectations, but Taiwan's position on manpower of the professional army is not necessarily lacking for its needs. Just needs reform.

There is sizeable part of society that is pro-unification with China. So US might not want to sell most modern military tech to country in which there are people wanting to unite with China and might actually unite with China in fear of war in which the US tech would end up in Chinese hands. Also it's worth to look up Taiwan's microchip industry like TSMC. China's been buying out all the top engineers from TSMS to relocate to mainland China and work on Chinese chip industry.

      China will not set foot on Taiwanese Islands unless the US provokes them into it. Neither does China see this as viable, China sees it as a last resort if every other effort is exhausted to reclaim their rightful sovereignty, there are other options for China to reunify with Taiwan as well, I mean look at how China regained Hong Kong, it wasn't via war or military invasion, it was simply purging the old relics or legacy of British colonialism in Hong Kong, such as getting rid of rubbish liberal studies in education which was one of the root causes of why the youth in 2019 HK were so brainwashed. It was through rubbish whitewashed history textbooks, other rubbish idiologies introduced with liberal studies. Its the exact same thing in Taiwan as well. Whitewashing of history, going as far as trying to warp the youths minds about their own identity & where they came from.
      The DPP in Taiwan, is less democratic than people think. You go to Taiwan & ask the local people there, a lot of them do NOT like Tsai Ing Wen & her party, all they want is peace, better living standards, but the DPP doesn't care about the people in Taiwan, so this idea of Taiwan as a democracy, freedom, is a smokescreen, many local Taiwanese even say this as well.
      Some do want to actually have reunification with China, then there are those who do not. Those who do, cannot be dismissed either, its the exact same thing that happened in Hong Kong, everyone outside HK completely ignored the other side of the argument, the people who supported HK police & HK government & China, those voices were all ignored by all western rubbish msm, now for Twiwan, its the same thing, those people who do want reunification & do identify with China's ambitions & development do NOT get heard on any rubbish biased western msm. Only Tsai Ing Wen & her clique get their voices heard in west, this is extremely dangerous, because Taiwan is NOT like Ukraine, or Iraq, or Libya, Taiwan is China's sovereign territory, this DPP has always had intentions for full out independence which is unnacceptable to China & the Chinese people also do NOT accept this, even the Taiwanese people don't want to provoke this . But the US, the Taiwanese DPP & their allies keep pushing for this to come to fruition, despite what they talk & claim that they do NOT wish to incite, encourqge any kind of independence of Taiwan from China, but their actions speak for themselves, then why does the US, sell weapons to Taiwan, why do certain European countries continue to antagonise China over Taiwan issue? It seems that the US, EU have a double standard on their Taiwan policy.
      Imagine for example if China, or Russia were to incite, encourage full out independence of certain regions in the states or in UK, how would either governments of those countries react to that. Yet i find it bizarre that western pundits, act surprised whenever they see a knee jerk reaction from China whenever these types of things happen, its strange for me to see others react like that, like as if they didn't expect this to happen. Its crazy, dangerous, reckless & based on pure ignorance of Taiwans history.
      Who was it that supported the Nationalists aka KMT, it was America who supported them against Mao & the communists. Well, the Maoists, took over China 🇨🇳, & is the recognised entity that represents the Chinese people, today Taiwan is largely seen as the American attack dog to be used against China, we see this with TSMC, with US trying to prevent this company being in the hands of China, we all know the future markets now is microchips. Whoever controls TSMC has a handle on future development for AI tech, AI driven vehicles. It just so happens that the US, doesn't want China getting their hands on this Tech before the US does, what does this remind of????
      This is akin to what happened with Japan in their economic bubble in the 199p's or late '80's, with US, swooping in, & taking over their technology to crush their economic competitors in Japan, its the exact same thing happening with China.
      And the 🇺🇸 can only manipulate their stock market to a point until, it all comes crashing down on themselves. Their idiotic policies, throughout the years, have overstretched their own military, have devastated their own domestic economy, its not how, if, but WHEN it will come crashing down on them.
      🇺🇸 Is playing with fire 🔥 here. And they're trying to fight fire 🔥 with 🔥

Missiles are going to be a lot more important here due to Taiwan being an island over almost any other war. You can just look at the battle of Okinawa or the Falklands islands and see that the a lot of if not the majority of casualties came from ships being hit. If china isn’t able to gain air superiority, then there’s no way they’ll be able to take over the island. If china is able to land troops, it doesn’t matter how many people the defenders have. Putting "leadership" on your resume doesn't mean a thing to employers.

    1. Have a 2nd amendment/strong gun culture and follow the Swiss in all men must have guns and equipment ready in their home.
    2. Have a conscript training system comparable to South Korea, Israel, and Switzerland.
    3. Be like the Swiss in their prior years with defense systems around the country and always ready for war.
    4. Have a realistic strategy to counter China. The current president strategy if a great deal example.
    5. “The wise warrior avoids the battle.” - Sun Tzu (Have peaceful relations with China and stop always following US foreign policy. Avoid any conflict, but be ready to give China hell if you have to go to war.)

    We mustn't exclude the rather progressive & pacifist mainstream media as a factor of issues with manpower, this has caused less of a nationalistic ideology to be seen amongst the Taiwanese people, and funnily enough the same could be said for America, which also has a military that is declining faster than initially anticipated.

    Taiwan is rich unlike ukraine, that is the very big difference and a great disadvantage in terms of conflict. The more poorer people you have the more manpower is willing to join an army, because they have nothing to lose and have no choice. Lack of manpower is also a problem in the US because there are more better opportunity elsewhere.

    • @WangMingGe

      And the people will generally be physically tougher. Someone who, at age 18-20 (or older, if they are reservists being called up), who makes a living as a farmer, factory worker, construction labourer, etc. is going to simply be more physically capable than someone who spends excessively long hours studying and playing video games, as young men tend to do in Taiwan, and whose jobs, if they have any, are computer or service jobs with very little physical exertion. So, not only is there a small manpower pool, but the contents of that pool are mostly going to be inherently unfit for physically demanding and dangerous activities.

Being college educated is the norm there and once you become college educated nobody in their right mind would join the military since the pay is low and you have everything to lose. People seem to believe that removing conscription for a volunteer force is overwhelming superior; it is not. Volunteer soldiers join for many reasons, money, patriotism, benefits, duty ect. That means that many volunteer soldiers can turn tail and run or have low discipline just as conscripts, the Ukrainians have conscripts and some of them have performed good, conscripts just means you MUST be part of the military if they ever need it, and the same issues that effect the volunteer forces are found in the conscripts. The main difference is this, one is a whole time STANDING army while the other takes time to gather and retrain In the case of a war, like in the case of Russia.

    • @randomclick2826

    • @louditalian1962

      @@randomclick2826 That too. But there are several kinds of conscripts, Russian conscription means all MEN have to do service unless they have a legit reason, while African conscription just means “here is a gun and some ammo, go fight” ; Conscription is a 2 year contract in Russia and after it you are released. The men who have volunteered were all conscripts and are doing retraining to keep their skills sharp, it is useless to send untrained men into combat.
