Boosted Stealth Speed Hack: Disappointing

  • I put 100mm red Boa wheels on the Boosted Stealth and thought it would go faster.
My V2 with the same wheels goes from 22MPH to 28MPH. I thought with the Stealth's base 24MPH, surely I'd be able to hit at least 30. There was a lot of wind though. And it definitely feels faster than my V2 but...
    Need to do more testing.

The Boosted Apple Watch app usually gives me the most accurate MPH while riding. Maybe check that out!

Honestly, this is really science why it isn't working if you think about the physics of the board. The boosted v2 has 80mm wheels and does 22, however the stealth has 85mm wheels and if you compare the speed differences with the baseline (28/22*24=30.5MPH) when you're looking at just the speed factor. However, you also have to account for the difference in RPM to maintain that speed which is (80/85=0.09411764706) so (30.5*0.09411764706=28.7486631016MPH) so this can only really do 28.7mph.

Boosted says it gives you speed based on the motor so it assumes you have stock wheels. “Ride” is probably better for speed test.

Also, is there a gear, bearing hack for the Stealth to increase speed? I can only go 23.6MPH, would like to hit 30 plus. Thank you Sam! -Jake, Olympia Wa. You videos are great! I've been using the stealth for about two weeks now and I just upgraded to the 100mm boas. Here are my results:
I weigh 152 Ib, Riding on hyper mode, with stock wheels, I normally get 23.4 mph on a good day.. 24 if theres little wind and a slight downhill.
I also get about 6.2 miles of range in that configuration, shredding for the majority of the ride.
With the 100mm boas, on hyper mode, I top out at about 28.3 mph on a good day with the optimal conditions. The range decreases significantly dropping to 4.4 miles. That's assuming the motors/battery dont overheat making the trip a lot shorter.
Do I think it's worth it? Eh...
Sam was definitely right about the the acceleration and braking; about a 30% difference.
Here in Tampa where I live most of the main roads that I take (that aren't highways) have speed limits ranging between 25-30 mph. Speaking from experience, you definitely feel like a hindrance when there are cars behind you and you're only able to go 24 in a 30. If you're in that similar situation and you can still make your commute with that decreased range, then sure it's worth it. Just Be aware of that decrease in acceleration and especially braking. The ride will also feel like a dream!
Otherwise if you can get away with taking backroads, sidewalks, or you live in a city like NYC where you dont need to go as fast, dont bother, save yourself the range!
PS: if you cruise behind cars, you can slip stream and increase your range slightly, about a mile difference!

love the vid! You should try measuring the speed using the Boosted app, if you start a ride recording on the app it tells you what the top speed of the ride was. You could probably do short ride recordings to do multiple takes

Def could be the wind - but I'm surprised you didn't try to get a more accurate reading or comparison for the video - just know that you are looking for those extra 1 or 2 mph, and waze not being super accurate - using a radar gun or something could be a great tool? -- i wonder if you can rent one or ask a NYC police to help - that'd be rad.

Assuming that the wheels reach the same rpm with both types, should only really expect to get top speed boost proportional to the size difference in the wheel. So 100mm/85mm = 1.17 and 1.17*24mph = 28mph

*V2 goes from baseline 22mph to 28mph, and as you see Stealth baseline goes from 24mph to again 28mph... completely normal.... you forgot that the V2 baseline is Based on 80mm stock wheels, the Stealth's baseline is Based on 85mm stock wheels... therefore you will see EXACTLY the same top speed on V2 and Stealth when you use the Same wheel size and stock pulley. Stealth has increased Torque from the ESC, the Speed boost comes from the 5mm increase from 80mm on V2 to 85mm on Stealth*
