Mark, I just received a SBDC089 from Japan today (along with a SARX073 101/1964 😉) and the strap is smooth, black and of good quality. Not the crappy strap on the older Alpinist. I've purchased a modded Seiko from you this year and couldn't be happier. I switch from purchasing watches from Japanese websites and domestic ones like yours.
Does any one know if there is a difference between Seiko SBDC093 and Seiko SPB123J1 Why does Seiko use different model numbers for the same watch since it seams both are made in Japan
Hi Mark, beautiful watches and they almost identical but I like the older version much better, you forgot to point out something important for me and possibly a few others and that’s the date magnifier, it’s purely subjective but that has kept me from purchasing some watches that I like, I don’t like them, to me it’s like a pimple on the crystal, the drop of water that never goes away, I know lots of watches have them including Rolex but they are not my cup of tea...nice review
I think most watches look nicer without a cyclops but I can’t see the date without it so its a big plus to me. Most of them are easily removed if you do not prefer to have it on there though.
I love the look of the older model, especially the white one. The cyclops on the newer model bugs my OCD for reasons I can't quite express. That being said, I would love to have any of these, but for the price. I just can't justify it. Of course, that is probably because I have blown so much on my collection lately.

Compared to the Presage line the Alpinist is steeper in price by a few hundred here in the UK. Is there any specific reason for that? For example is there a significant difference in quality or is the movement better etc.

Good on you Marc. I have the Sarb017. I like the new white dial somewhat I like the new movement for the power reserve, the deployant clasp is a good upgrade, the see through case back is really very cool too. However the Cyclops over the date, which is not difficult to read at all on the old model seriously reduces my enjoyment and gives me no desire at all. It makes the dial look too busy and it was perfectly balanced before this addition this is too much and tries to make this something its not or shouldn't try to be, they also changed the font on the 20 bar so too many different fonts look unbalanced and add to the new busy look. However, the two tone bracelet will look amazing in the sun, it is a must have for me. A strap video for these would be welcomed I put mine on a NATO and on real croc leather strap with gold buckle to match the numerals and do get positive comments. Thanks again Marc well done!
I like the new models much more than the sarb017. The colors are much better (more rich) than the flat and basic looking sarb017. The cyclops is also a next level in design
Thanks for that clarification video. I got told the other day that the SARB017 was only 38mm, not 39.5 like I stated for the normal Alpinists. I ended up not responding, rather than argue over it.
Hopefully the 6R35 movement has less childhood diseases than the 6R15. Also it is very reassuring to see Seiko still offers their traditionally sub-par straps even with increased price.

Anywho a couple Q’s- I bought an SARB017 and an after-market butterfly deployant for the stock leather strap from you a few year’s back- Would the Seiko deployant that now ships with the new watch fit the original strap and if so is it available for purchase? I know people don’t like the original strap but I like my watches like my cars- OEM mostly. Second, dumber Q- would the new display case back screw onto the SARB017 case? if so could that be done while keeping the 20 Bar rating? I’m curious if the 6R15 in my 017 Alpinist looks the same as the 6R15Ds in my 033 and 065, or is it even more undecorated? I didn’t say I was curious enough to unscrew the case back. The different shade of green on the dial is due to the AR-coating. I replaced the flat, no AR OEM crystal on my SARB017 with a domed crystal with AR, and it changed the color completely. Looks much better, deeper. Take a look at the dials side-by-side from 0:30 on. It really is that dramatic in real life too.
@@Awkwardfruitfly Honestly: not really:) The switch from flat to domed makes more of a difference. It's not like I had legibility-issues with the original, just found the flatness a little boring. One(under)-sided tinted AR diminishes a lot of reflections from most angles, but also adds some (in my case nicely hued) 'artefacts' from others. Omega coats their crystals on both sides, and that virtually eliminates all reflections, but the coating on the outside will scratch over time. I replaced the Hardlex on my Samurai and Turtle (both 2018 STO) with a flat Clearcoat-AR sapphire, and that is amazing. No hue, and when viewed straight on, it's like you can touch the dial.
I know this is an older video, but perhaps someone can still answer my question: since the cases may be the same architecture between the old and new model, can the case backs be swapped? I all because I don’t care about the display case back and would like a slightly thinner watch even if it’s only 1-2mm.

I have a seiko premier ssa027 that came with a calfskin leather band, the band is torn down now. I think that if possible I will like to replace the band for a seiko jubilee bracelet its 20mm. This watch has a compass on its face. It appears (I wouldnt know for sure despite watching numerous reviews solely dedicated to this watch) it has a seperate button solely for the compass. No other analog watch I know of has a compass. Obviously being a field watch and a person who does light hiking a compass is nice, in fact it is the sole reason I am interested on this watch. Why is this feature always ignored?
Great vid, i own the earlier green 6R15, and wear it on a black nato with gold hardware which looks great,... but managed to ding the bezel which is easy to do. Anyways, you forgot to mention the dial on the last black face one is quite different to the other three. no arabics. no reference to the rolex explorer, which is essentially alpinist. I am afraid Seiko messed up that black dial.

@@cdb5001 J is for Jubilee bracelet. Rolex doesnt like when you say oyster bracelet and jubilee bracelet. All the strapcode bracelet names on Marc's site had to be changed at one time.
I can see the date on the left. That is a larger consideration to the reading glasses crowd than the under 40's realize. It's certainly more practical than adding compass roses to the bezel. Seriously that is useless. You find south with the hour hand and the 12. Then what? Do you turn the bezel to align all the other bearings, and then walk around holding the watch in while trying not to turn it. In the alps you're going to be stuck on trails anyway and only needing general directions. I'd rather have the St. Bernard with the brandy. They do look great though, maybe someday.
Seiko's MSRP price never hold true forever. This is what they always do. For example the SKX when launched I believed MSRP for around $500 and (before discontinuation) you could easily get them for $230ish. Same with the new 5 Sports line (a.k.a the 5KX, people were outraged at the fact that it's inferior to the SKX, but MSRP for $300, but now you can find them frequently on sale for around $200, and I foresee it coming down a bit more in a few months soon. Give it a couple of months or even a year or so, and I promise you these new Alpinist will drop in price.
After years and years, someone finally measures the watch.

Which crystal did you go with?
I believe you missed the movements difference. The SBDC091 / SPB121 have a 6R35 caliber and the 6R15 caliber in the SARB017 (AKA: the old one).

Screw down crowns are to aide water resistance. So my guess is that water getting into the compass dial won't hurt this watch.

You have to align it with north/south first, using the sun.
The owners manual tells you how to use it but it is only “accurate “ in the northern hemisphere at higher latitudes.

Same with the new 5 Sports line (a.k.a the 5KX, people were outraged at the fact that it's inferior to the SKX, but MSRP for $300, but now you can find them frequently on sale for around $200, and I foresee it coming down a bit more in a few months soon.
Give it a couple of months or even a year or so, and I promise you these new Alpinist will drop in price.
