So happy I watched this review because I was thinking of getting this but now that you pointed out all these flaws I dont think it's worth it! For anyone wanting a similar style watch, I'd go with the Ball Watch Co. Engineer 2 Ohio... I was tossed between these two watches and was going to save s and me money and go with the seiko but not anymore! The Ball seems to be much higher quality...
Glass case back is pointless and nowhere does it display any logo or text mentioning Alpinist. The white date wheel because of a Cyclops kills off any chance of me trading up (down) for this. I'm happy to keep my SARB017. Thanks for showing it to us though 👍
I am pulling the trigger on one and buying this week. I convinced a big jeweler chain to pick up the Prospex line here in Greater Boston. He wants to wack me for the full $750 US list price. Can you send me some store links for the $500 price you mentioned? Thanks, Jeff
Thank you for the video well done for giving a realistic appraisal. For real world people where 3 or 400 is not insignificant it is very hard to justify this. I own way too many watches including the SARB017 so I am not the avg consumer and a Seiko fanboy and I would not buy one of these new “Alpinists”.
@@justinbowe38 No ; it's because I have good taste. A green watch with golden indices .Bleahhh No wonder they are still everywhere in stock after they've been discontinued since 2018 ; it's hard to get rid of such abomination.
You must be the only person who prefers male end links. Unless you pay thousands, Seiko won't give you a top notch bracelet. I just bought the European addition in glacial blue. Of course, there are better watches for a lot less, but mine is a bit of an investment. Technically speaking, the Relio Solstice or Phoibos Nebula are better watches. I own the same Steinhart as you featured, no idea where you bought it for 250 euro, more like 450 now.
All the ones that come with the leather strap I would purchase if they came with a bracelet. Pity the one I dont like comes on a bracelet, what a silly decision by seiko as they should all have bracelet options. I do like the cyclops on these.
I like it but agree with you..its not worth the steep retail price increase I would have liked it more if they put "Alpinist" on the dial instead of automatic It just seems lazy
The leather does not take weeks to soften, it can be done in 5 or 10 Minutes by hand, can be done on the watch or off, bend and work the leather, result......perfect.
@UptickWatchReviews Great vid, I know this is a late comment, but it would be awesome to see a "redo" of the rooftop shot at the beginning to see the state of HK air quality during this lockdown. Anyway, keep up the great work!
Awaiting the cream/gold hands (SBDC093)- will be putting it on a Barton’s coffee brown alligator band with gold buckle. Agreed that Steinhart rocks!! BTW, Great views from your high rise!👌Spot on review too!
I have a 39mm double red steinhart from gnomon which shipped fast 2 Australia, the 4hz has really made my seikos feel lacking now. I dunno if I'll buy anymore watches that aren't hi beat. I bought this black alpinist recently, got a pretty good deal but other than the compass bezel which is unique for me it is as boring as my 5KX now.
the printed seiko on the display caseback is totally unnecessary and an irritation, similar to what omega has done to some of their display casebacks ...
@@therichardchannel Yes, but it pushes this version more towards a sports watch. The even numerals keep the other executions "dressed" up. This is the one I have, btw. I wanted the black dial and silver markers. I would have preferred the numeral dial.
This watch looks great. I think Steinhart is great too but this watch is it's own beast rather than a homage so I'd rather go with this.
I have this watch and it’s awesome. I’m very happy with my decision. I gave my 017 to my wife, so I’ll also get the new green one too.
In the future, maybe 10 or 20 years , the black/grey version will hold up better than the other variations of this watch.
nice to see you back doing seiko ..
Thanks for sharing your comments.. much prefer the earlier green dial. As you say they are now overpriced.
I love the black dial

I will check it out. I was ready to buy the Seiko.

Why does it need alpinist written on it? Yes traditional but big deal, some people are hard to please😂

I was gonna buy the original one, but I’ll get this black dial one instead. Will wait for the prices to drop though.

I have the green alpinist and I wouldn't trade it for either of these.
Everyone in universe owns a green alpinist. Your green alpinist is nowhere near as beautiful as this back alpinist.
@@Ge0rGi. it sure is

Is the cyclops lens removable?
That model needs some clean up for the money. Good reveiw . Thanx. P.S. Tx.

Nice video
Would you purchase the sarb17 again?
Craig Sekowski Yes, but not over $400, it has to be good value for $.

I now have the black and I love it
Does the compass bezel still wobble out of alignment? It’s a total fail for me I’m afraid.
Love the beginning 😂😂😂😂😂😂😭

Is this still a JDM release from Seiko or is it an international release? Great video, really enjoyed it.
Hi, like the older version much better including the older price!!!
Green is not for everyone 🤢🤮
The Steinhart Ocean one 39 is a better watch. Better deal .
It's a diver AND homage LOL. Apples and oranges...
Homage = 🤢🤮
You would be happier if you bought yourself a 3rd Gen Monster. Trust me....
Dang, I thought Jody and you doing a collaboration... haha

I echo the previous comment, the new ones lack soul compared to the older green ones. That is my pick for my next backpacking trip 😀⌚️
How?
Pity they dont all come on bracelets.
The new alpinists are an abomination lol so glad i got the older model.
Prospex logo kills it for me
Seriously ?🤔
The older one is so much better . This one cost to much . What is going on at Seiko . They are going to mess this up.

The small triangle markers, on the black dial version, make it a non-Alpinist to my eyes.
The original black alpinist had triangles
