DooM is timeless. The gameplay loop is addictive, the difficulty is set right, and the search for new secrets keeps you coming back. While the game is simple and archaic compared to modern FPS title, that actually works in its favor. I'd wager modern gamers that never played DooM would find the game very challenging. I fire it up on UV about once a year and it's still challenging to get through even when you know what's coming. The lack of quality AI isn't a problem when you can pack more monsters in. Darkness and tight corridors make it hard to dodge enemy attacks. But the beauty of this game is that it's the same today as it was in 1993. It's quick to pick up and play, you can drop in at any time, and it's going to deliver. There are no lulls in the story or dead moments if you are just playing. The game remains one of the most casual friendly shooters ever produced and still offers a lot for hardcore fans. And with more maps coming out every year from the excellent modding/mapping community, you are guaranteed to never run out of new content to play.
I just started this month and I am so glad I did. It is so addictive. I don't have much money so I just pay the ps premium monthly fee instead of buying games. They have SO MANY games that come with it including practically the entire Doom catalogue. There are even add ons for OG doom. Sigil, Anomaly, Scientist. They have custom weapons like lightning gloves and bows and arrows. So fun.
Welcome to playing Doom! Its never too late to start playing and glad to see you enjoyed your time with Doom 1. Also don't worry about the first 2 maps of Thy Flesh Consumed, everyone has gotten wrecked by them at some point, especially if you try them on Ultra Violence, the Shotgunner trap at the beginning of Hell Beneath especially is an absolute nightmare to deal with if you're not prepared for it!

My PlayStation copy just showed up about two weeks ago. It’s the first time I played DOOM since the 90s. I played it every day. It’s actually an awesome port really creepy with the soundtrack.
community maps/mods are the best thing about doom, not just the official episodes. the community is the only thing that kept this game alive despite its age
Gotta agree, it is truly amazing that so much stuff still comes out, the question is how would it be if Doom 2016 never happened, still alive, but would it be 50% as active? I feel like that is hard to say, the appeal for me was simply how easy it is to create stuff, but also enough depth so if you want, you can really spend months on one map.
@@DinnerForkTongue you'd be extremely surprised. Classic Doom content shows up when searching for nu doom. And there's some really hook-y classic Doom mods and channels.
Literally is 90% of my channel's content. As long as we keep supporting our amazing Community's Map Makers and encouraging new Mappers to flurish the community will continue to go strong as long as they have the will! Rip & Tear my friend you've got my sub to help you're progress ;)

I'm a firm believer that everything that was done for doom2 was more than just an upgrade, it was doom times 2
Just played the original 3 episodes last week. My last time before was in 1994 when i was not even near old enough to play it 😂 I think even the original games rock hard 👍
great video, only complaint is the usage of the reverb-smeared "DooM Music" uploads for the bgm instead of the clearer sc-55 versions, but i can't blame you at all for it because the former have more views on youtube and therefore get pushed to the top of search
ID software in the 90s and 2000s: 'DOOM is an action and horror game' ID software now: 'DOOM is an intense combat game nothing else... oh yeah and it's like corn without the corn' (if anyone is confused switch the C with a P in corn)
i noticed you been using the BFG wrong, so here's a guide on how to properly use it when you launch a BFG projectile, after the projectile coliding with something, it will scan whatever is in your fov and deal damage to everything that's there so the best way to use the bfg is to shoot a near by wall and then walk a bit to the left or right to look at the enemies and deal damage
@@bacalhau_seco Yeah, i Mean the wall trick is great if you needa instatib a bunch of hitscanners, but for everything else you should just make sure the projectile hits your main target, I mean 800 damage is a good chunk, even the lowest roll of 100 is not insignificant.
Why would it be "too late" to play DOOM? I just played E1 today, and downloaded a new WAD a few minutes ago. Been playing since the Shareware. Played Jaguar DOOM, DOOM 64, Mac DOOM2, DOOM3, iPod DOOM, Master Levels, and Final DOOM, and countless WADS and Mods.
I stand with John Carmack about the game story. For me it is an excuse to play the game, not the reason. If I wanted a purely story drive thing I'd just go watch a movie or show. My only exception are visual novels, which are basically interactible novels.
I mean, there's a way to learn play FPS games if you never played FPS games ;) In modern standards - original Doom is super easy even on Ultria Violence difficulty. However, brutal clones - not so. I cannot play not "brutalized" versions anymore. It's too boring for me. Fun fact - in modern games medium difficulty is often too hard for me. I mean - I could theoretically beat those games even on "hard" setting, but it's not fun. It's too much stress and effort involved. Doom started with this thing right - the game is to be FUN. Not the world-wide competition, life-style, like a pro sport when you train at least 8 hours a day, but just fun activity. Not too easy, because it would be boring, but not too hard, to make it just fun for people who didn't at the time have much experience at playing that genre. I'm glad they still make such games - see Selaco.
I started playing Doom 1 on PS4 after finally getting around to try it out from knowing about it most of my life. It was the best $5 I've spent in a while.
As someone whos been playing doom since 2005 and the very recent development of the modding scene of newdoom, probably not worth going out of your way to play classics anymore. With official mod support now and the release of IDStudio they have paved the way to hopefully bring the expansive modding community the classic dooms had over to the modern dooms. Official mod support + doom eternal being very well optimized and able to run on less than ideal setups with lower settings and the help of dlss, this basically puts classic dooms into the ground. The classics have been around for 30 years. Its time for them to retire, and let us enter a new era of doom. They have kept true to the identity of doom with eternal and hopefully DA, doom itself is not going anywhere. I personally was pleasantly suprised to see how close to doom 2 its philosophy and visuals were, its just how my little kid mind imagined it 20 years ago. Its just evolving, catching up to modern times. You fight mostly the same demons with basically the same behavior, using the same weapons and targetting priority you would have in the classics, but now with more stuff that *doesnt get in the way of the original visions*. Its even built from an updated version of the very engine used to make previous dooms aka idtech. Newdoom IS classic doom, they just never stopped updating it.
It's all about preference, not everybody likes the new doom and would prefer to play Project Brutality or brutal doom. I've heard many eternal players prefer Project Brutality or brutal Doom. Classic doom doesn't need to retire just because there are new versions coming out. Your comment is full of bad advice.
Doom is great, but going back to the maps atleast for doom 2 is always painful, they kinda really suck compared to custom maps released even a couple years later, but I won't complain because doom 1 was bland in terms of enemies, Doom 2 enemies are amazing!
Classic Doom will always have a bigger modding community because it is relatively easy to make entire total conversions that match the quality of the original game. Matching the quality of an AAA game is just too much work.
