Its kinda sad that when Moorlish idols go to spawn five out of a thousand survive due to the rest being hunted and eaten by blacktip sharks. Sounds familiar? Sea turtle hatchlings that race to the sea and escape hungry seagulls and ghost crabs that want to eat them.
@@IndriidaeNTAt least in the turtle's case, hundreds at least still manage to make it to the water. Here, the handful is so small that you can count them within seconds.
Wow ! What an amazing footage! I don't know how long you were looking for this footage but the moment this happened your camera man must have been the happiest person ever!
Well, this is BBC, but an unusually amazing footage, revealing a stunning behavior never seen before. Coral residents tend to be poor swimmers, but they outlast sharks! Risk they take appears huge ... Benefit? As they're commonly seen in the coral, their brave behavior is rewarded obviously. Why they do that remains mystery.
I would assume that, by breeding in the open ocean, the Moorish idols reduce the risk of their developing young getting swept directly into the reef, where many filter-feeders and stinging corals are waiting to feast on them.
@ So where do you draw the line when it’s ok for one species to feed on another species? What’s the criteria? If it’s cute, or if it’s a pest, or if it feels pain? So if a species feeds on another that feels pain that’s not ok? Guess those cute lion cubs will have to starve.
@ You made it your business when you gave an opinion. Yes actually, all of nature is equal. It’s only narcissistic humans that seem to think that they should be the ones to decide what species is more deserving of life than another.

hundreds of years ago they would know it's a feeding behaviour. they were in tune with their world, unlike us.

It's unsettling to realize just how quickly they move in reality, especially compared to most footage where they appear to swim more slowly.
Ever seen Chinese tourists at a hotel buffet line? Those are even faster, and more aggressive

Not ruthless, just nature. It’s like saying the Moorish Idol ruthlessly feed on sponges and coral.
exactly, sponges and coral bleed and feel pain just like any other fish. hang on a minute ...
