Thanks mate! Yeah, quite so. It is different from things just purely generated inside the computer. I don't think Orchestral Movements In The Dark wrote their song "Electricity" about analog synths. But it might as well have been because it is so apt. In all seriousness, the rawness of the sound is one thing. But the hands one approach is another huge factor. That breaths a lot of life into the pieces as well. And that's something you can achieve with a midi controller and some VSTs.

Really nice and hypnotic!. Layering the two instances tuned to each other and your live tweaks really came together very well. Also the edge does receive midi note data but it is relative to the tuning of your oscillators. Also working with something like the Korg SQ-1 you can break out of the limitations of the built-in sequencer…

Really digging this channel since it popped up on my feed. Hope it gets more views/subscribers 👍🏻 think something that would help, is showing how you make sounds and patch the semi modular kit. Just got a kobol myself so would be interesting to see you do videos on patch creation. Even better would be to do without a specific sound that you’d already made. This is cool! I don't like VST's all that much. I'm old school. I like being able to turn knobs, and have a machine I can turn on, and use. I just got a wasp..I sold my CRAVE, and I didn't know what this was, until I watched a video, out of curiosity. I have the Arturia Drumbrute, and while I like it, and it's fairly easy to use, it takes up too much space. I'm not really a synth player, but I like having fun with these machines. I'm a guitar player who has always been synth curious. Thanks for a very good Demo!

How you getting on with the wasp I was thinking of getting one , think the original one was probably what got me into synths , then I borrowed a sh101 from a mate that was in the RAF had it for ages , I was addicted then
@@0z33y I don't have a Wasp, I'm afraid. It's been in my shopping basket numerous times. As has been the Doepfer Wasp filter module. But I never bit the bullet. Not sure why. That filter is oh so tasty! As is the sh101 filter. I can totally see them being a gateway drug indeed. It's a nice thing though, you taking care of your mates synth while he was away. Did he want his synth(s) back after his stint the RAF?

And for me that's a feeling of joy. I've had couple friends play with mine. And they all ended up wanting one. Not all of them bought one. But they did consider it. Cause it's just fun to jam with. And lose yourself in the sound for a while.
@@electronictiger Thanks! I took the name from the William Gibson book. I spent some time with the DFAM in stores when it first came out, but never got around to picking one up. I think Edge has a bit of a different character, not in a bad way, just different. I don't know if it would feel redundant for me, I get a lot of rhythmic pitched type stuff with Pam's and Manis so there would probably be some overlap...but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to try crosspatching an Edge with my eurorack stuff.

Yeah, the Edge and DFAM are different beasts. The filter design is different, I think And I do prefer the knobs on the Edge. With what you've already got it's hard to say you need an Edge. But they are so much fun! And portable / stand alone units. I find myself doing that more and more. Just having a play with it. As a way to unwind. But I'm sure cross patching it with your modular would be inspiring. :)

And OF COURSE it is possible to play the Edge via MIDI. What are you even talking about? You just have to set it to the right MIDI channel on the backside. Just read the manual!
Cool . I use my edge very similar , and try to start out more synth sound like pads ect , but it just leads you into chill out rave , it’s filters are designed that way, after all it is a percussion instrument, and I find it very hands on , great for live performance, if that’s your thing , I try to stay away from its midi , it is annoying , but control voltage works ok , I have it links to its brother the crave , and a Drumbrute impact , via a Microfreak , a zoom multi effect and a sq-1 …

KORG sq1 all going to a mixer and out to a zoom MS70cdr , all soon to be joined up to a modular that I am in the process of building ….. you will have a lot fun with whatever setup you choose , and making sounds is what’s it’s all about …..

Or are you going for more effect / processing modules? They're is some amazing stuff out there in Eurorackland. The other day I learned about 4MS' Metamodule. Expensive, but it allows you to run code from VCV rack in your physical modular. With CV patch points. Which is wild!

@@0z33yWelcome to the rabbit hole 0z33y! Yeah, the costs are a serious barrier to entry. I'm so happy that something like Behringer exists. Because it does drastically reduce the price. Still, it's very far from cheap. The neat thing is indeed you can sell it on. And recoup quite a bit of your funds. Spring reverbs are fun! As I'm sure you know, they have a peculiar flavor based on the length of the spring. I don't really like the spring reverb in the 2600. I think the springs are just too short for my tastes. But I have a longer spring bank. And that's just a gnarly sound, in a good way! No plugin can match that. It's not always useful. But when I want that specific sound there is no substitute. A lot of old (practice) guitar amps have a spring reverb built in. And you can sometimes get those for basically free at thrift stores. Just go into the instrument in and out of the headphone out. And you could also experiment with mic'ing up the cabinet for a different sound. But it's cheap way to experiment with the sound and see how you like it.
How did you do the layering? Did you record the first one as an audio track in your DAW and then played over it on a different track? I don’t think you can play both tracks with the sounds coming out from the edge right?
Yes, exactly that. I recorded the second take while listening to the first. So I'm responding to what is already there. And indeed, the Edge is a monosynth so it can only output a single sound.
Thanks BPEMETO! What Behringer synths I would recommend really depend on what music you want to make. But the 2600 is extremely versatile and just generally awesome. And I also love the Kobol Expander. Which has a very different sound. I adore the Pro-1, you can't go wrong with that one. I'm considering its polyphonic brother, the Pro-800. Hope this helps!

I was thinking something more like The Cave and The Edge or TD-3-MO and RD-6. The type of music I want to create is more like in your video. No external keyboard ... just knobs and sound and rhythm : )

@@BPEMETO An audio interface for sure. Get one with more inputs than you think you'll need. And something to record into, a DAW. Can be anything really. I like Reaper and its inexpensive. And some cables to connect it all. If you've got more money to spend, buy some effect pedals. Delays are your freinds. Can be cheap guitar pedal. Keep your setup small, play, experiment and see what you need next.
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 The Edge is a drum/percussion synth. The Grind is just a monophonic synth with a sequencer. The grind has digital oscillators and the Edge has analog ones. So you can get very different tones out of them. So if you want to do something melodic, the Grind is the more obvious choice. If you want crunchy analog beats, the Edge would be the logical choice. Though you can squeeze out all manner of cool sounds out of the Grind, too.
Hypnotic indeed. I like the double layering idea. Did you have anything in mind when you did the second layer or just went for it with the hope it would fit in, which it did with the base G and D notes and similar, gradual modulations? Did you have a stopwatch going as well to get both layers closing out at the same time? Just curious how you approached it. I have a Crave and a TD-3, you could say an Edge is an obvious next addition when the next round of GAS hits.
Thanks Jon! I listened to the G performance whilst recording the D performance. So it's me responding to what's already there. I chose G and D because they are a perfect 4th apart. So they are consonant together. This would have allowed me to add an additional melody. But I didn't really feel I could fit anything in, so I abandoned that idea. Anyway, I'm sure the Edge would be a lovely accompaniment for your TD-3 and Crave.

@@jonmaddison Sorry, my bad. Indeed, a perfect 5th as the D is higher than the G. I originally started on a lower D but that sounded messy. Too many low frequencies. So I went an octave up. But I didn't change my way of thinking about it. Thanks for pointing it out! I mean that sincerely.
I'm really saddened that it has no way to reset the cycle. thus there's no way to do a pattern that's anything other than 8 steps. Been wanting to do some 6/8 and 5/4 stuff lately and it would be awesome for what I'm doing, but the only way is to sample it and chop it up. Which is what I might end up doing but it's not nearly as fun that way
Yeah, a CV controlled reset would have been brilliant! Chopping things up is super useful...but also very boring, indeed. The Edge demands to be played with. I'm going to do a video with this some day soon. There are some things you can try to side step the problem, at least a little bit. An external sequencer being the obvious one. And you definitely can get different timing feelings out of the Edge by routing the either the pitch or velocity out into the tempo in. Just run it through a multiple, like the Black Market Monomult or through a splitter cable. So you can route it back into the appropriate CV input. Now you can make all kinds of crazy rhythms. But it's going to be hard to sync up. Unless you make The Edge the master clock.
I like the edge more than my TD3, it can make comparable sounds and much more. The result is a often by random. If I had an idea what I want, I better use my Neutron. But for bass lines or a background Melody I like the edge. For kicks it is nice, but not my favourite synth. I wished it has sawtooth waveform. Yeah, compared to the Edge the TD3 can be a bit underwhelming indeed. The Neutron is a monster of a synth. Truly a beast. Yes, it would have been cool if the Edge had a saw wave. If you're really desperate for a saw wave you can run all of the control outs like the envelopes and pitches to the appropriate CV-ins of the Neutron. That opens a whole new dimension to the Edge. Especially if you use the Neutron's multiple to clone the signal to control something like the waveshape. Anyway, thanks for stopping by! And sorry for the late reply!!
Thanks Tomax! By modern standards there is definitely too much reverb on the kick. Go back 30 years, and it's a lot more common to have reverb drenched kicks. That's the stuff I grew up on / like and the style I was going for with this jam. So I'm happy with how it sounds. Nonetheless I sincerely appreciate your feedback. A lot of my other jams have way drier sounding kicks.Anyway, thanks again!

That's exactly what it is. Software is great and has its uses, but you can't beat the harmonics from an analog synth

@@electronictiger I have the crave out to the Microfreak in at the moment, the crave is also cv linked to the edge , and that’s got midi out to the. KORG sq1 all going to a mixer and out to a zoom MS70cdr , all soon to be joined up to a modular that I am in the process of building ….. you will have a lot fun with whatever setup you choose , and making sounds is what’s it’s all about …..

What kind of direction are you taking with your modular? More sound sources? Or are you going for more effect / processing modules?
They're is some amazing stuff out there in Eurorackland. The other day I learned about 4MS' Metamodule. Expensive, but it allows you to run code from VCV rack in your physical modular. With CV patch points. Which is wild!
@@electronictiger i am starting small never ventured this way before , so just starting with a create audio kit , hopefully trying to keep in budget , I want to try out a spring reverb , other than that the direction is a mind blowing experience, trial and error at a cost , and if it goes horribly wrong , well it will end up on eBay …lol
@@0z33yWelcome to the rabbit hole 0z33y! Yeah, the costs are a serious barrier to entry. I'm so happy that something like Behringer exists. Because it does drastically reduce the price. Still, it's very far from cheap. The neat thing is indeed you can sell it on. And recoup quite a bit of your funds.
Spring reverbs are fun! As I'm sure you know, they have a peculiar flavor based on the length of the spring. I don't really like the spring reverb in the 2600. I think the springs are just too short for my tastes. But I have a longer spring bank. And that's just a gnarly sound, in a good way! No plugin can match that. It's not always useful. But when I want that specific sound there is no substitute.
A lot of old (practice) guitar amps have a spring reverb built in. And you can sometimes get those for basically free at thrift stores.
Just go into the instrument in and out of the headphone out. And you could also experiment with mic'ing up the cabinet for a different sound. But it's cheap way to experiment with the sound and see how you like it.
How did you do the layering? Did you record the first one as an audio track in your DAW and then played over it on a different track? I don’t think you can play both tracks with the sounds coming out from the edge right?
Yes, exactly that. I recorded the second take while listening to the first. So I'm responding to what is already there. And indeed, the Edge is a monosynth so it can only output a single sound.

Thanks BPEMETO! What Behringer synths I would recommend really depend on what music you want to make. But the 2600 is extremely versatile and just generally awesome. And I also love the Kobol Expander. Which has a very different sound. I adore the Pro-1, you can't go wrong with that one. I'm considering its polyphonic brother, the Pro-800. Hope this helps!
@@electronictiger Thanls! : ) For sure I would get some of these one day, but right now I'm an absolute beginner with analog synths ... I was thinking something more like The Cave and The Edge or TD-3-MO and RD-6. The type of music I want to create is more like in your video. No external keyboard ... just knobs and sound and rhythm : )

@@BPEMETO An audio interface for sure. Get one with more inputs than you think you'll need. And something to record into, a DAW. Can be anything really. I like Reaper and its inexpensive. And some cables to connect it all. If you've got more money to spend, buy some effect pedals. Delays are your freinds. Can be cheap guitar pedal. Keep your setup small, play, experiment and see what you need next.
I’m trying to wrap my head around the differences between the Edge and the Grind. Can anyone explain the similarities and differences?
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 The Edge and the Grind are very different beasts.
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 The Edge is a drum/percussion synth. The Grind is just a monophonic synth with a sequencer. The grind has digital oscillators and the Edge has analog ones. So you can get very different tones out of them. So if you want to do something melodic, the Grind is the more obvious choice. If you want crunchy analog beats, the Edge would be the logical choice. Though you can squeeze out all manner of cool sounds out of the Grind, too.

Hypnotic indeed. I like the double layering idea. Did you have anything in mind when you did the second layer or just went for it with the hope it would fit in, which it did with the base G and D notes and similar, gradual modulations? Did you have a stopwatch going as well to get both layers closing out at the same time? Just curious how you approached it. I have a Crave and a TD-3, you could say an Edge is an obvious next addition when the next round of GAS hits.
Thanks Jon! I listened to the G performance whilst recording the D performance. So it's me responding to what's already there. I chose G and D because they are a perfect 4th apart. So they are consonant together. This would have allowed me to add an additional melody. But I didn't really feel I could fit anything in, so I abandoned that idea.
Anyway, I'm sure the Edge would be a lovely accompaniment for your TD-3 and Crave.

@@jonmaddison Sorry, my bad. Indeed, a perfect 5th as the D is higher than the G. I originally started on a lower D but that sounded messy. Too many low frequencies. So I went an octave up. But I didn't change my way of thinking about it. Thanks for pointing it out! I mean that sincerely.

I'm really saddened that it has no way to reset the cycle. thus there's no way to do a pattern that's anything other than 8 steps. Been wanting to do some 6/8 and 5/4 stuff lately and it would be awesome for what I'm doing, but the only way is to sample it and chop it up. Which is what I might end up doing but it's not nearly as fun that way
Yeah, a CV controlled reset would have been brilliant! Chopping things up is super useful...but also very boring, indeed. The Edge demands to be played with.
I'm going to do a video with this some day soon. There are some things you can try to side step the problem, at least a little bit. An external sequencer being the obvious one. And you definitely can get different timing feelings out of the Edge by routing the either the pitch or velocity out into the tempo in. Just run it through a multiple, like the Black Market Monomult or through a splitter cable. So you can route it back into the appropriate CV input. Now you can make all kinds of crazy rhythms. But it's going to be hard to sync up. Unless you make The Edge the master clock.

I like the edge more than my TD3, it can make comparable sounds and much more. The result is a often by random. If I had an idea what I want, I better use my Neutron. But for bass lines or a background Melody I like the edge. For kicks it is nice, but not my favourite synth. I wished it has sawtooth waveform.

Yeah, compared to the Edge the TD3 can be a bit underwhelming indeed. The Neutron is a monster of a synth. Truly a beast. Yes, it would have been cool if the Edge had a saw wave. If you're really desperate for a saw wave you can run all of the control outs like the envelopes and pitches to the appropriate CV-ins of the Neutron. That opens a whole new dimension to the Edge. Especially if you use the Neutron's multiple to clone the signal to control something like the waveshape. Anyway, thanks for stopping by! And sorry for the late reply!!

Thanks Tomax! By modern standards there is definitely too much reverb on the kick. Go back 30 years, and it's a lot more common to have reverb drenched kicks. That's the stuff I grew up on / like and the style I was going for with this jam. So I'm happy with how it sounds. Nonetheless I sincerely appreciate your feedback. A lot of my other jams have way drier sounding kicks.Anyway, thanks again!
