Great project, Chuck. I’m needing to make a hatband for my Indiana Jones leather hat.
Btw, many months ago you suggested thrift stores as a source for belt hardware. I took that suggestion to the next level. I’ve made friends with the owners of the local thrift store. I small leather gift once in a while goes a long way. These folks get a lot of junk donated that they cannot and will not pass on to others. So they save the purses for me. It is a great source of zippers, rings, buckles, magnet closures, etc. not to mention ideas for more projects.

Hi Chuck, long time subscriber and love the videos, watched every one. Question: is curing leather in the oven safe? This is in regards to an older video concerning hardening leather. My wife doesn't want an unsafe oven to cook in that's all. I'm pretty sure it's safe but if you can reply to this that would be great. Thanks in advance 👍🏻

OLD LEATHER SMITH here. Suggestion, try a toaster oven it works great and you can use it 4 a lot of other things in the shop, that is what I do, and my wife is a lot happier. Any more questions please feel free 2 ask. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾️🙃

Just stumbled across this video and the timing couldn't have been better. I'm a beginner and just finished my first major project and was looking for my next one. Several months ago, I found a black Stetson cowboy hat in my size in excellent condition at a thrift store for $5.00. All it needed was a bit of steaming to reshape the brim. A nice hatband will be just the thing to get it ready to wear out and about. I learn a lot from your videos, so keep 'em coming!

Beautiful colors!!! I'm not a fan of dying leather, had a rough time with it when I first started leather, and now 9 years later it still intimidates me but this looks so lovely I feel I need to try it again.

I'm new to this and started it simply as a way to cope with leftovers from army time. I have found that the process is very helpful. The stuff I make, not so nice. Thanks for all your work. I'm hooked on this hobby but doubt I'll ever make anything this nice.

OLD LEATHER SMITH here. Great Job Chuck. I have a use 4 your holes, when I carve I usually do 3d, especially if it's a Flower, Leaf, even a picture of a Dragon. I lift the leather and push the holes I have behind the lift, makes it more real and when John Q public likes 2 press said lift it's solid. When I punch holes in any leather especially a belt the client Always asks how much, I tell them $2.00 a hole unless you let me keep the hole, and then I show some of the different holes I have saved. I also have kept a practice flower 2 show when asked. Sorry 4 so loooong. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

For how much leather to add, it's the thickness of the leather x 3.14.

    Hey Chuck:
One other comment about that billet??? If you suddenly buy a new (bigger) hat, you can cut the center of that band and rivet in the billet, like an expandable waist band in pants. No one will ever know?:~)))
    Y'all stay warm and safe.
    God bless:

OLD Leather Smith here, excellent job Chuck. I use all holes when I carve 3d. I place the holes behind the 3d such as a flower peddle because people like 2 push, I always tell the client 2 push or feel the petal they are usually amazed. I have used this on all my carving 4 years and have never had a complaint from a client.
When I punch a hole in a project 4 a client they always ask how much and I say $2.00 unless you let me keep the hole and then I show them what I use them 4.
    Sorry 4 so loooong. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

Thanks very much for this video. Question: The couple of times I tried punching holes in dry leather and it plugged up my hole punches. It goes through wet leather like butter but I don’t always want to wet the piece. Is that typical? Do you think yours went smoothly because you used a rotary punch?

Another great project Chuck!!! Also, I've been suggesting and collaborating with other makers here on UA-cam and one salutation we have for those little hole punch nubs is different border and spatter designs for acrylic resin pouring. Different color dyes sporadically sprinkled in and around the resin castings make for beautiful paper weights and picture frames!!! ❤
