    Located on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, Pine Flat Lodge emerges from the environment as a place of retreat and immersion. The off grid cabin is proposed as a minimal insertion within the landscape, a simple gesture that holds the space between the pines and the expansive view beyond the site.
    Imbued with a sense of belonging and placemaking, the off grid cabin was approached in a deliberate manner, with focus placed on the conservation and rehabilitation of the land. As a response, the architecture and interior design of the off grid cabin accentuates an outward perspective, blurring the lines between indoors and out. The off grid cabin is comprised of a series of modules within a continuous envelope, which in turn opens out to the landscape. The communal spaces are separated by decks and continue the structure’s discourse with the external environment, while the sleeping quarters represent an intended moment of quiet and retreat. The off grid cabin tour also highlights Pine Flat Lodge’s solar power and rainwater collection, a physical reminder to visitors to be mindful when experiencing the space and landscape.
    When designing a cabin, especially one that operates off grid, sustainability must inform each component. The material of the cabin is motivated by the surrounding context - sustainably sourced timber is used throughout the off grid cabin. The structure utilises resources in an accountable way by pursuing efficient use of materials and minimising carbon footprint while supporting local craftsman. Bespoke details feature throughout the cabin, celebrating craft and the natural environment in an authentic and sustainable manner.

    I have been a fan of your channel for about 6 months. I live in Houston, Texas USA where the environment is not even a word. Nothing but a concrete jungle here. I'd give anything to travel between Australia and New Zealand. I dream of building a home for my wife and my two dogs there. Some of my personal favorite videos are The Point, The Witta Circle, and Five Acres just to name a couple. I miss mostly seeing the nighttime sky (stars). What a Splendid channel.

    This is quite an amazing home, with such an unusual footprint, a long continuous horizontal plane. I have been watching this channel for several months, and I don't recall ever seeing a project like this one that focused on sustainability and preservation of the environment. I see that the homeowners are living off the grid, understandable, given the location. I would have wanted a bit more information about the use of solar panels on the roof as well as the rainwater collection tanks, and even the nitty gritty of whether they utilize composting toilets. In regard to sustainability, it would be nice to see more urban projects with renovation of existing spaces. I can think of the Cairo Flats in Melbourne, which have historical significance, and are modernized for the current homeowners.

      I feel it's mostly out of necessity rather than sustainability. Australia is almost as large as mainland US, but inhabits only 26 million people. The low density makes it cost prohibitive to hook anyone up to the grid outside of populous areas. Where I live now, it's 35km from the centre of Melbourne and we're only connected to the electric grid. The house itself functions like a normal house with the exception that rain water is collected from the roof into a 30,000l tank. An electric water pump supplies water to the house. Waste ends up in a septic tank. It's not entirely self sustaining and needs to be cleaned out from time to time. But overall, it does make you aware of your water usage.
      The biggest issue however is that most houses here aren't that energy efficient. And because it's not that common, building one can get very expensive if you want to do it right. You'll notice that most of these cabins in these videos rely on wood fire stoves to keep them warm, because of the large single glazed windows. You can get double glazing here, but it's usually not up to the standards you'll find in Europe. So to heat up a home and keep it warm, you would need an excessive amount of solar panels to compensate in the winter months.
      These cabins look great as a get away in summer, but I can't imagine them being that comfortable in winter. Especially in places like Victoria and Tasmania where it does get cold.

I also liked listening to the designers talk about their work. None of this over embellished theoretical nonsense or design snobbery that often ruins so many uploads. Well done on every front!

      @Terry Wrist what the fuck are you on about lmao? Do you think flat boxes are supposed to be more climate friendly or something? It's just a design trend, love it or hate it.

    • @marcus_b1
      @marcus_b1 2 роки тому +5

      Having a flat roof actually improves the temperature regulation of the inside of a structure like this. The space crated by a traditional roof creates a large air gap storing heat in the summer and cold in he winter causing the need for either additional ventilation or cooling or heating therefore increasing the occupants cost even with good insulation. A strong flat roof dispatch heat mainly pretty quickly.... it's why computer heat sinks are NOT made in a pyramid shape.
      Also the traditional roof creates a lot of material waste solely based on it's design along with losing an easier ability for a structure to adapt over time to requirement changes.
      The "box" shape structure also cuts way down on material waste as well because its easier to make a square from straight line than to make circles and triangles etc. You would be surprised at the amount of material waste ( money waste ) goes into the traditional structure.
      That is the short answer to your question and not the excrement brain fart answer above about "woke....etc".

    • @ramonburchell6366
      @ramonburchell6366 2 роки тому

    The house may be all that you claim, but it is also essentially a privately owned, single-family, detached, second home on a remote, (presumably) formerly indigenously tended site, designed for the delectation (and moral absolution) of a few affluent, leisured people. As Theodor Adorno once said, wrong life can't be lived right.

    I'd make a couple of points: the first and most obvious one is that the music is WAY too loud, at one point I couldn't hear the narration whatsoever - dial it down a bit, please.
    Secondly, this extruded, linear plan is about as inefficient a footprint as it's possible to create. So spare me the continuous spiel about it being "an efficient building", it's not. You'd use much less material and have less structure the closer you got to a square footprint. Having said that, I do like the building but it's not that great, maybe a 7/10 IMO.
