Inside a Modern Ranch Built Into the Surrounding Landscape (House Tour)

  • Situated in a frequently cold, wet and windy location, Ramirez Residence by Norman Millar Architects and Judith Sheine Architect is a sea ranch home that is built to complement the rugged landscape. Placed north of San Francisco, and positioned along miles of ocean coastline, Ramirez Residence possesses an interesting history that goes back to the community’s conception by Alfred Boeke. Transforming a sheep ranch on a degrading landscape into an ideal utopian community, Alfred Boeke implemented strict design guidelines for the architecture of the buildings and the way they sat in the landscape. As such, each of the surrounding homes were inspired by weathered barns, designed out of local timber and made to withstand the harsh climate over a long period of time.
Built into the landscape, Ramirez Residence was specifically designed to preserve local views and communal open spaces. Based on the design principles and ideas of the weathered barns with the slopping roof of a ranch, Ramirez Residence appears fairly simple in its exterior form. With no overhangs to prevent uplift from the strong winds, the house tour shows an almost box-like home clad in local timbers but, once inside, a complex and articulated interior design reveals itself. Following the house tour inside, the reveal of built-in furniture continues the idea of a home nestled into the landscape. Emphasising this idea in the bathrooms and kitchen, the architects encourage the idea that the rooms and kitchen are objects within the home.
Working closely with the client, the architects came to understand his inclinations, which then helped them to lean into creating a home that complemented his character. As such, the sea ranch home leans into big open spaces. Furthermore, the primary bedroom remains open to maintain the views of the garden, cliffs and ocean from the comfort of bed. For the interior design and décor of Ramirez Residence, the use of timber was emphasised to create a warm environment that again relates to nature and the outdoors. Douglas fir is used on the furniture veneer plywood, while the walls are a marine grade Douglas fir plywood and outside contains Ipe wood. Additionally, the use of cement is applied to further extend the idea of the ranch being connected and built into the landscape. Though being a challenge to both Norman Millar Architects and Judith Sheine Architect, Ramirez Residence strikes a balance between their styles of architecture and the guidelines of Alfred Boeke and the landscape.

Beautiful ruggedness, reflective of the nature that surrounds it. I've ridden my motorcycle through that area, it is not only what you see, it is how it feels and smell. The sea, the trees, the flowers, the rain, the mist, the wind, the sun- all of it. There is honesty in ruggedness. The house is the same. Honest materials, makes the connection with the building effortless. Love the design. Kudos to the architects.

I recognize this lady architect from a documentary called Coast Modern years ago and I really like the style she described things. Glad to see her again years later talking things about designs.

This is a beautiful house, but the view is even better. Being built on top of a cliff is to me pretty much perfection when it comes to a having a house on the beach. A big bonus is all those gorgeous trees. It's really an impressive view.

the way she speaks of the land is exactly the type of person you want building /designing things. if someone doesn't respect a community, nature and their surroundings everything will be lost over time.

I like the architect, and how she articulates her own principles and those she is working within, very much. I had difficultly following the logic of the space through the videos. Half the time I didn't know if I was in the main house or the guest house, the front wall of the bedroom or the back wall. The idea that you look at the view from the bed seemed to apply only to the guest house -- unless I was turned around?

The architect says how it's a "simple box" on the outside but it is not! I love those protruding windows with window seats built in, I like the timber wall on the 2n floor and the large windows facing the ocean - it's not that simple and in a good, aesthetically pleasing way. The interiors were great as well except for one thing that just ruined it for me. I hate those wood panels on the ceiling - they look cheap. They are too busy for the space. Had it been something similar to the timber cladding of the walls, I would've loved it. It would've been more uniform and not as busy and distracting. Those panels make ceilings look lower and distract from the rest of the space, which is just gorgeous! I loved all the build-ins and the use of open spaces with a bedroom without walls and that open style kitchen.

photos can deceive. the warm clg brings attention to the view. but with all the walls and built ins being wood, you're right. and the walls are not timber, just more of the same plywood. she praises the natural while the home destroys it. great house but. i learned about the sea ranch development in college mid 70's and saw pics of a few examples. i'm an architect. i visited mid 90's. it was so depressed seeing the place in person. home owners there even have to pass a committee review of their curtains! the place was so drab and boring. and early HOA gone berserk.great house. i learned about the sea ranch development in college mid 70's and saw pics of a few examples. i'm an architect. i visited mid 90's. it was so depressed seeing the place in person. home owners there even have to pass a committee review of their curtains! the place was so drab and boring. and early HOA gone berserk.

@@justthink5854 thanks! this color is great on this house! It's cool to see how it was improved since the 1990s! Maybe it's not timber - it just looks like it is and the look is far better than those panels on the ceiling - i guess that is what I was trying to say.

I thought they said the house was built on a former sheep ranch that had degraded the environment. I think the reason the place looks so beautiful is because of the architects who planned the master community.

I don't think anyone should be banned from anywhere, we are part of the world as much as the world is part of us. What we construct is part of the world, as much as the mountains, dunes, rivers etc are part of the earth. No one complains when water flaws and erodes the earth into streams, rivers and lakes. No one complains when the wind blows and together with the rain form the earth into rock and plains. What of earthquakes making mountains? Or trees makikg forests? We are part of nature and this is how we leave our mark on our world. Even animals teraform the earth by grazing, wondering and living. We should not be exempt from that beautiful way of life.

Pretentious mess of a house. Filmography of this site is equally off point, most of the video is waxing poetically about trees and grass while the house is not being shown at all. Did I say pretentious mess? Oh yea, worth repeating. Unsubscribed.
