Some basic tips for your play through:
- Stick to using either spells or attacks for damage, don't try to improve both at the same time
- Spells are easier to play the campaign with because they gain significant damage increases from levels. Attacks don't increase quite as much and are much more reliant on how good your weapons are
- Your biggest source of damage increase throughout the campaign is going to be support gems linked to your primary skill, pay attention to items that have 2,3,4 linked sockets as you go through your play through so you can upgrade your skills with more support gems

Try to check item shop after you complete the quest that has skill gem as reward. They would add new gem into the list.
some useful skill:
Steelskin - basic guard skill can use before you take damage and cure bleeding
Vitality, Clarity, Precision - Aura skill that reserve your mana for buff. needs more mana at higher level. just choose some or all of them as you like
About passive tree, you should check some big node. The bigger it is, the more it affects the gameplay. Most builds usually have at least one.
Also, if you look at Trickery node and go upper a little. You will see Dagger Mastery in the middle of some small node. When you hit biggest node in that area then, you could put a passive skill point into the middle and choose one choice you need.

If you don't want to backtrack so much, don't log off until you find a waypoint/town.
You talked about support gems then didn't actually /do/ anything about it. Generally speaking, supports add ~30% more damage. Seriously, look through what supports Nessa is selling, get some 3-linked items from Tarkleigh, actually get some supports on your skills /then/ start playing the game.
That Trial of Ascendancy that you only half finished isn't a puzzle, it's a gauntlet. Also, it (and a few others you'll come across later in the campaign) you will need to do at some point.
There's no lockpicking in this game. There are locked doors, they just require you to find keys. And as you found out, need to kill all the Strongbox monsters (they have a white ring under them) before the box opens. "Artisan's" means it drops currency that affects quality.
There were two things that were chunking your life: 1. Bleed. 2. Shock. The former is physical DoT damage that increases when you move. The latter increases the amount of damage you take. Start paying attention to the buff/debuff icons in the upper left corner.
That Strongbox you couldn't get to required you to find a switch on the wall to open the path.
You did set the item filter. The chat box even said "Item filter loaded successfully".
Iron Ring vs. Coral/Paua - Well, do you want to do attacks or spells (Viper Strike is not a spell and Ethereal Knives is not an attack)? Attack: Iron + Coral. Spells: Coral + Paua.
Start ID'ing boots, looking for movement speed. MS in this game makes a /huge/ difference.
