"Keep the clock ticking until HE TURNS THE HOB OFF!" Jamie letting the stern parent show :P
That kind of plays into my suggestion, not only Jamie's "request" but also, instead of just Ben judging, have the boys do 3 meals across 3 days, so each cook each day, but also their family judges. I believe all of them have kids, but if Mike doesn't then even just having Mrs Huttlestorm would be fun to hear her feedback on his cooking, and on the entertainment of his cooking.
6:43 Barry starts chopping
6:49 the chopping is done, but Barry has gained a suspicious plaster…nice edit! 🤣
Yup….. he managed to cut himself while cleaning the knife 🙈
@@SortedFood Classic Barry
@@swissfoodie3542 well… of course there’s editing on the challenges because the video isn’t an hour long…
@@swissfoodie3542 should this be 1.5 hour show? Ofc they edit it but i guess they do keep the time they are alotet to cook in real. We just don't see it all
@@SortedFood love the added detail that he cut himself while cleaning it :D
Request! Can we have the same series, but with chefs? So maybe... Ben, Kush and James coming back as a guest? (Let's be honest too, we'll gladly welcome James back anytime) 😁
That would be fun! And I’m curious to find out where they would take it.
Seconded
I'm throwing my name behind this excellent suggestion
I agree, but maybe add Poppy in there too.
James went back to his mountain for training.
Letting Barry cook in his preferred style, with full control of the activities, and not being subject to any interference we got to truly see the range of qualities and skills he has but rarely has the opportunity to demonstrate in other videos. He planned well, shopped intelligently and cooked calmly and got everything right following a personally devised plan rather than experimenting and putting himself at jeopardy
The order wasn't just about disguising the "left-overs salad" though, doing the salad first while everything was super fresh was absolutely right. But I'm surprised Baz couldn't buy a small quantity of block cheese!
I thought doing the salad first was a good idea too because the lettuce would be freshest and the pickled slaw is going to get stronger and better as each day goes by
Depending on the place he shopped at, the grated stuff may be less expensive _per unit_, which sometimes is the make or break on a budget-limited challenge.
@Finwolven the boys said it was the most expensive way to buy it and Barry said he'd chosen it only to avoid a wastage penalty because it was the smallest amount available
Sometimes it's better budget wise to use the smaller quantity if it means there is nothing going into the trash can.
@@mfowl777 Cheese doesn't feel like an ingredient that should get a wastage penalty though, because you wouldn't actually waste it. You have plenty of options to use up whatever cheese you're left with.
I’m a college student who really appreciates this series. I live in a tiny studio and really don’t have the room/money for a store cupboard. This has given me lots of ideas for buying my weekly groceries
And it's not like you're strictly limited to a $24 budget like they were, so if you see something missing or something the boys in the video think would improve the dish, you can always add that to your own personal version.
I don't have a pantry either. I use the fridge. As a side note have heard this makes the fridge run more efficiently as well.
The way Jamie perked up as soon as Barry said “slaw” is everything
Yeah
I think Barry knocked it out of the park, TBH. It's not a Michelin Star challenge, it's a planning/shopping cooking realistic midweek meals challenge. And he should be congratulated for sticking to the brief and not trying to be too clever by half (for a change).
Bravo, Barry!
(and yes, all of them looked delicious, though I think the burger was begging for a Korean BBQ sauce)
you guys are my absolute comfort channel, everytime i feel down i watch/rewatch some of your videos and it always cheers me up! thank you guys ❤
I could not agree more.

Oh yes. A sorted video works well as a nightcap.
Same, I can't tell you how many times I have rewatch Pass it on lol,
I've got to say, Barry is great at these, it feels like this is his niche. And he's right, making the use out of ingredients across the week doesn't just mean the ingredient, but the "leftovers". I often roast a whole chicken, shred the meat after then use that already cooked meat into curries, sandwiches, pies etc throughout the week and it's great that he did that with the salad and the bacon here. Well done Baz.
I do the same, I’ll use one breast with some creamy pasta, another in a salad, the legs in a curry and then any leftover meat on the carcass plus the wings I’ll make a chicken and sweet corn soup for 4 different meals from one chicken then use the bones to make a stock in my slow cooker with any vegetable trimmings etc
@@NJTRAF Love it! Smart cooking right there. My usual go to, roast dinner, chicken and leek pie, chicken curry and coronation chicken, then the same as you make the stock from the bones. You've got me wanting to try the chicken and sweetcorn soup now, maybe some noodles.
Baz is a weekday king!
They all should be able to cook in their sleep. They've been cooking together for over ten years. Ten years getting paid to cook makes them all professional chefs. Dont be silly.
Last week, after Easter, we had lamb Mediterranean wraps, lamb tikka masala, and lamb/veggie stew
Pausing in 11.48 to write these: Barry is so mature and calm and collected in this episode, it actually scares me a little. Well done Baz! 😯😯
I really feel like being a Dad has really suited him!!
In the words of Mike: "I don't know this man."
He annihilated this challenge. I think his cooking deserved the badge because of the efficiency. Midweek meals you want to cook quick if you're tired after work. I'm impressed.
Let the chaos reign over the realm of the Prince of pointless pretenciousness!
Pretentiousness. Sorry.
Baz is in his element in these challenges! He has an idea and executes it with a minimum of fuss. I feel these were pretty safe recipes, but when you're doing midweek meals then that's what you want! Nice work, Baz!
You could really see how much it pained Ebbers to give Barry all three badges 🤣
As much as it clearly annoyed Ebbers that there was not a great deal of “cooking” in the dishes, it hit the quick, easy and low waste brief perfectly, well done!
Thank you for including stuff kids will like!
You are right Barry, we Italians born in Italy, do not agree or will ever put mozzarella or any kind of soft cheese on a pasta dish unless it is cooked in the oven, like lasagna, pasta al forno, etc.. You do you.
Barry has a great planning and is such a calm and collected presence when he puts the effort in, and such a wonderful chaotic disaster when he tries to adjust on the fly 🤣
Cooking for toddlers really does change how and what you cook (reference to seasoning later in a dish, I totally don't use enough salt in my kids pasta water) . Would be interesting to see them try and make healthy kid approved meals on a budget.
Baz comparing his performance last time he did this, to the birth of his child caught me so off guard I cackled
Honestly, I would be more than happy do dig into this menu, all looks and sounds intriguing to me
Love to hear it!
These challenges are an inspiration. I really, really need to get on top of my planning for my own food stuffs.
I wished they got to pick one unique ingredient for eachother. Like a "sabatoge" but in a fun way.
I'd rather the content focused more on food than entertainment value, because for me it's the cooking and the food and the thinking about what we eat which is entertaining. I'm glad their videos have less gimmicks than they used to, sometimes it was fun, but sometimes it just felt frustrating because it got in the way of the food.
@@fabe61 But sometimes you do get sabotaged. Example: you're planning to make a specific dish. You checked your pantry to make sure you have certain ingredients and then you shop for the rest. You come home to start cooking only to find either a) the pantry item is "expired" or b) another person in the house ate said item.
Sometimes the best invention of food is because of substitution.
It's amazing how calm the person gets when making something you are familiar with, instead of curve balls! Really inspiring
Love seeing Barry cooking with style! Keep up the incredible work guys! Love you all!
More to come 😁
That was impressive planning, cooking. I always let the lettuce wilt in the fridge it’s great reminder to start the week with the salad and finish with the dry. Honestly, Barry is the most improved since I started watching this channel 😊
Really well done - I don’t think I can do that. Hat off to your commitment on no food waste - obviously in real life, we buy bulk for economy of scale and freeze/pickle/preserve things we could not eat in a week ❤
This si realistic midweek cooking, I love it!
6:31 looks like Barry sliced his finger along the lid and it took a little bit of time to show as it would've been a thin cut.
Calling leftover shredded cheese waste tells me a lot about how weirdly myopic the mindset is at Sorted. As if having extra cheese were a bad thing🤨
Yes that is odd . Mostly you want to use up all your fresh veg. Other stuff good couple weeks. And even when veg start wilt little could be used as stock or frozen used for stock later.
We always eat our leftover shredded or sliced cheese. It never goes bad because if the humans don't eat it the dog does. He loves dairy.
14:07 Barry getting possessed by the oven demon lol. loved the recipes! The pasta looked amazing and the slaw to go with the burgers sounds like a great option when you wanna have something other than fries to go with a burger. Super impressed.
edit: also, people who don't reason their food until they're done cooking rise up!! I gotta do that because otherwise my food ends up being too salty.
I did wonder why no seasoning, but Barry does make a good point about toddlers and fussy eaters in general. Plus, all that cheese means there's not much need for salt any way.
And the olives and the anchovies and the bacon -enough sources of salt :)
@@Snowshowslow My thoughts exactly.
This is basically the same kind of stuff that I like to make - not super complicated, but full of my preferred flavors.
From “Do rocks burn?” to “And can you peel a sweet corn?”, we all grew up.
It is a joy to read your comments here and under TISS lmao
@@manasi.deshmukh Omg that’s so sweet! Thank you!
@@manasi.deshmukh what is TISS?
a true OG reference 😂
It's a good question though, with a positive answer - coal is a rock, and it burns!
Let the chaos ensue 😮
This was fantastic. And I like that one meal was more meatcentric, one carby and one very healthy. Three heavy meals would have been too much. But, normals like me who don't want to increase their waistline can benefit from this cooking here. Thank you!
Barry did well, but overall Mike's dishes seemed a lot more interesting/appealing. Great job on the calm and lack of panic, though! I think this series should come with a sort of post-game podcast where everyone discusses how they got on and their thoughts watching the others and the end result (after all the episodes are out, obviously.) So much of what goes on during gets (understandably) cut for the vids, it would be great to get a deeper insight.
I’m with you. Other than the salad, they weren’t what I’d personally want to eat. Too much pork for my taste
@@Emcobb2 Jamie will read that and wonder: there's something as too much pork?
@@christinebenson518 so, so true!
@@christinebenson518 to be fair, _I_ read that and thought "There's something as too.much pork?" XD
Ebbers you dony want fancy cooking midweek. This was great midweek cutting.
Me sneaking out at work to watch Sorted...
Watching it again later in comfort so I can laugh as loud as ever 😂😂😂
Great job Baz🎉
JAMIE SPAF...STEP UP TO THE STOVE PLEASE 😂😂
Seeing that Barry has shopped at waitrose (despite just saying 'A more expensive supermarket'), makes this *really* relatable, as my only nearby supermarket is Waitrose so everything I get comes from there.
American here. Is Waitrose as posh as Michael McIntyre jokes about, such as the “Waitrose push”?
Hi person checking comments today! Have a lovely day!
Based on Jamie's suggestion, Barry was in fact 3 days over time as he never turned off the hob :D I still wouldn't turn down any of the dishes here, just waiting to see the next step.
Plus supporting a comment suggestion from a previous week - have them do a shop then switch the bags on them to see how it turns out. Delicious chaos I hope!
How can Barry possibly be pretentious with this budget? Can’t wait to find out…
He usually manages to find a way 😂
Finally a sorted video I can watch, missed barry last two episodes
Barry has gotten so good at these battles. And his badge game has improved dramatically.
I love these challenges more than the ones on other channels. They have to buy their own dry ingredients and everything where other channels will buy like 2 things for 10 dollars and pull out hundreds of dollars of ingredients and specialized equipment from the kitchen to make their "simple" dishes.
"I don't season till after. I'm cooking for a toddler". I respect the heck out of that statement. I took cook for toddlers. There's only so far you can go unless you want to cook 2 different meals every night. Or worse yet. Get takeaway.
I never understood why my mom didn't make my brother try more foods as a toddler. To this day the only vegetables he'll eat are : carrots, corn, peas and the occasional sprinkle of lettuce on a taco. Fruit is worse: he'll only eat apple sauce or drink apple juice. He's 22 and he only eats vegetables if I cook for him.
@@christinebenson518 We put something "new" on every plate. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Trying something new means being Brave! We have good days and not so good days. Toddlers are a fickle bunch.
Barry is always the standout in these. Let’s go Barry!
He’s been having a winning streak recently 🔥
@@SortedFood Relaxed Barry is a problem, Panic'd Barry is 3rd place.
So far the best one! This is more realistic. I love that Barry was cooking like he does at home. This is something I can do! No weird ingredients that would have to be ordered online or drive into the city to get because the one little grocery store in our rural area stocks everything he used! More of this kind of cooking, please!!!
I agree!
People make jokes about Baz always leaving the hob on, but nobody talks about the fact, that he always hits the cutting board with the blade of the knife, before he starts chopping:D
Be more Barry! You've inspired me to bake a loaf later for a charity bake sale at work - thanks for the great content boys!!
Best of luck with the bake…. You’ll smash it 🙌
While I'd prefer to be SERVED Mike's, I like Barry's the best so far, because he's cooking like I do midweek. Like 10 minutes cooking a familiar meal with maybe a new ingredient, using cooked leftovers as parts of other dishes, doing most of the seasoning at the end because not everyone likes the same thing.
And of course the sudden knowledge that he used the wrong bottle of oil is just too accurate, I will never live down the day I mixed up my Soy Sauce and Vanilla Extract. I buy vanilla in bulk, so the bottles were the same size...
Before I started watching, I was thinking "Can Berry do this again? In my heart, yes he can." After watching, "Berry didn't let us down!!!!" Awesome job Berry!!!!
Barry gets a cooking badge even though he served raw bacon in every dish? That is not food safe.
And he made a salad with whole leaves of lettuce? And he burnt stuff? I also question that the "burgers" had any flavor. Why not use sausage instead of plain pork? Sausage mince is cheaper and has way more flavor, it would be great in bolognese.
this one was great, however, as barry said, very fatty, colesterol heavy... i think that the nutritional balance is something to prize them with too, its hard to achieve in a budget
Ben looks quite at ease with his top button on his chef jacket undone.
power move shopping at Waitrose too, that's really a £14 budget in any other store
Poor Mike looks like he hasn't slept for weeks!!!!
Has Jaime lost weight, or is that just me? Well done, Jaime!
He’s lost a few pounds indeed.
I think Barry typically kills it in these types of challeneges. He really thinks like a midweek home cook. The fact he started with the salad and moved components down the line is upcycling 101. Well done. Never even thought to start with the salad and work down. Learned a tactic today.
I have never seen Baz so calm and collected, I'm impressed!
Rooting for Barry! Go on lad 😂
He can do it! 🙌
Something you have talked about before is limiting wastage, cleanliness, etc. I think it would be a great idea to do a One Pot/One Pan Pass it On, where you can only use one pot, one baking dish, one pan, maybe even one serving/stirring utensil. That would limit cleaning at the end (hopefully) and I think really fits with the midweek, easy cooking/cleaning theme.
A pinch of bicarbonate soda and water in with the onions will make them cook down and go brown in 5-7 minutes. It’s not as good as properly done onions, they turn slightly to mush, but it can be an incredible time saver when you’re putting onions in something like a blended pasta sauce (I know the challenge wouldn’t let him use bicarb, this is just a tip)
nice, i'm trying this, Love Bacon. Bet Tom Scott would also try this. Also loving the tidy kitchen. LOL 😂
Am I the only person in the world who takes of my wedding band when I cook ?
A little baking soda would have quickened up those onions.
This is the earliest I’ve ever got here 😭
Welcome to the early club! 🙌
@@SortedFood I love you guys 😭👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent video! Just curious as to how you keep the dishes warm while waiting for them all to be done? Or do you just eat it lukewarm in the end?
They’re usually lukewarm, but we’re used to it now 😂
@@SortedFood yeah, I was wondering about that too. And it probably makes judging more difficult as well, some dishes just have to be eaten warm to be tasty...
Barry's comments about not seasoning until the end because of their toddler got me to thinking. Sorted started with trying to teach uni students how to cook; now that everyone is all, ahem, "grown up" ("You're 35!) and now that all the normals are dads, how about some more family-style cooking? I can see a couple of tacks: 1, just general "good food that kids will like too" and 2, ways of keeping the adults sane with flavors or ingredients that are more bold but being able to incorporate bringing along the kids without having to make completely separate meals for them. The "Leveled Up" series you guys used to do is an excellent version of that. Simple for the kids, but elevate it for the adults without a lot of extra work.
Buying cathedral city in a budget challenge? Typical Barry. Fair shout on the treacle tho, I do something similar when I make BBQ sauce. I use golden syrup instead of brown sugar
Not sure I'd have given a Cooking badge for this. Just nothing particularly innovative, plus the chewy bacon and burnt breadcrumbs
12:29 Add a pinch of baking soda. It will raise the pH, softening the cell walls quicker and get jammy faster. Too much though makes it mush.
Compared to last time, I'm slightly disappointed in how, I guess, simple the dishes were. And very little seasoning. Overall, tho, I'd definitely eat all three happily. Baz just set a very high standard last time
Why are you buying "pasta straws" Bas? Are you making pastitsio? lol Not gonna lie, it's one of my favourites. I had to get creative as a vegetarian cos you can't rely on fake mince alone, so I added courgette and aubergine, like it seemed appropriate. Edit: YES IT NEEDS BAY LEAVES. :P
Nice episode but I don't agree with the badge for shopping - he used things that were on the table that he didn't buy, unlike Mike and this grated cheese was a waste in my opinion - more plastic, it also spoils faster than a large block of cheese and if you buy a large block of cheese you can grate the amount who want and have leftovers for the rest of the week instead of buying cheese every week or every few days.
And pasta is pasta, there's no reason to buy the one he bought because the sauce doesn't really go into the whole pasta and you can just buy any shape, just like Ben did in the Christmas special against Jamie of a budget versus an unlimited budget, so it's also a waste.
I also don't know how much cooking was really done here, but that can still be debated, but in my opinion there is no reason for a shopping badge here.
I don't understand not seasoning the pasta water. A little salt makes all the difference, and seasoning afterwards will never give you the same result. Still, the ragu looks lovely!
All the dishes needed seasoning as the salad could have done with something like sumac or something and the burgers could have done with something, as having 3 bland meals rather than 3 well seasoned and designed meals as it reminds me of cheap cafe food rather than restaurant quality food
As there was no herbs or spices that went into the meals at all. The burger mince could have had seasoning and the spag Bol could have had seasoning.
The salad has good flavours but there was no design into how things looked , as with knife skills the way that you chop up lettuce, carrots and onions. That stood out as a chef.
Mike in the previous episode used lemon in an interesting way across the dishes and thought more like a chef. If the coleslaw was more like an apple slaw or something more interesting
Mike was more adventurous in the previous episode and should have been awarded for it
Well done, Baz! I would just suggest taking your rings off when hand mixing food 😅
You should let them have leftover things that are obviously reusable - a half block of cheese has great use in a fridge for weeks. Obviously a half avacado, not so useful.
Barry got called out 😂😂😂😂
The plan to do salad first was smart, he just tried to sound smart'er
What's with the colors in this video? They have red spots on their faces and Ben's hands look like he bathed in beetroot juice.
I like this format - simple and instructive. While this is based around mid-week, should also do a week food prep. I find with a few kids hard to do interesting food for the week (e.g. lunches) when rushing out the door.
Bucatini is my favorite pasta shape.
Mike looks absolutely amazed at 6:07 🤣
I think he left the hob on so it'd be hot for his next meal prep... lol! In pass it on, he always keeps it on to heat up for the next guy...
Make this a sidekick recipe! Only the treacle used looks like a more expensive brand.
Swap for brown caster sugar, palm sugar, pannenkoekenstroop or maybe marmalade since that is cheaper in the UK.
haha looking at the left over veg I would use sweet peppers over hot and one Guinea pig would eat the "leftover" vegs no waste :)
Things I will never understand:
- Jamie being in charge of food colouring
- Mike descending into full Mike
- Things being thrown at Barry that makes me concerned
Weird seeing non panicking Barry :D
To be fair he didn't really panic last Grocery Shop battle.
The meals all looked delicious and, as Barry said, something you would realistically cook midweek.
Could these recipes be put on the sidekick app? I would love to try these!
So English muffins in England are just called muffins.
Oh wow, the sticky bacon is definitely a thing I'm gonna try! Looks so delicious 🤤
It's so good!
Please more casual fun cooking and less super polished content
I'm a big fan of preparing several components that go well together in advance, and then using those components in different ways across several meals during the week, just like Barry has done here. One example that I do fairly often is that I'll make some kind of pulled pork (sometimes carnitas, sometimes al pastor, sometimes bbq), pickled red onions, and a creamy slaw of some kind. Those are all components that go well together, keep well in the fridge for days, and that you can quickly and easily combine with other ingredients/components to make a variety of different meals.
I miss the poker face challenges would love to see them come back. Great content always thank you.
Barry played it super safe and I think he could have challenged himself a bit more like he did last time round. All good mid-week dishes though
Speaking of peeling corn, does it not come in a husk in the UK?
I don't know how you would do it, but how about an episode about how to recover various dishes once they have already been messed up? I.e., potatoes au gratin that has gone soupy, lasagna that won't set solid, too much salt/pepper/vinegar/chili, overcooked noodles, etc. For those who are as incompetent as I am in the kitchen, how to walk-back our disasters would be nice. Thanks!
