Please invite Paul Gulacy for an interview.
There is a lot of action in this and I love Gulacy, but it is interesting to think about how movement and action is being portrayed now by such artists as James Harren or Daniel Warren Johnson. The photo realism so prevalent in older comics has given way to so much impressionistic dynamism. I love them both for different reasons.
Batman: Prey. The art of this guy rules.
This was a low point for Batman. New Teen Titans was DC's biggest seller at the time, and Legion of Superheroes was one of their top 3. (I would guess Crisis might actually be the top seller for this year.)
“Gene Day was a cautionary tale”. What happened to him? I thought he died of heart disease? Did the job wear him down?
Paul Gulacy is one of those dudes I'd want to sit down for at least half an hour and just prod his brain, JUST to see what techniques he was using because holy damn, you can spot his stuff a mile away.
I share in the sentiment with Jim that I could have SWORN this was 70s Batman from the Denny O'Neill era. That being said, it's Gulacy. Dudes going to bring his A game.

Gulacy is very talented. Loved his work on Batman and later on Catwoman books.
That is Literally the first comic I ever bought, # 393 six years old lol
I remember not being mature enough to appreciate Gulacy back in... maybe it was some X-Men reboot or something? Will have to look at those again with fresh eyes
I've been reading the original Ditko "Hawk and Dove" issues, and the characters in their costumes are first introduced by kicking a door open. And Ditko draws these quite unsual poses, like they're running and kicking at the same time. You can see that panel in the H&D Wikipedia page, but that whole issue (Showcase #70, I think) is really interesting.
Loved the video, I just reread Terminator secondary objectives . Great Gulacy work.

Thanks. Some of America's greatest artists have started in advertising or illustration - Homer had made lithographs for the Civil War newspapers, Edward Hopper had begun with commercial illustration. I think the Parisians had like the Nouveau and Nabi styles and other artistic expressions more integrated in their social order than perhaps we did before commercial illustration faded in the light of photographic power. Gulacy integrated his commercial advertising work with a "realist" expressionism that bends the rules now and then in his work for this Batman comic.
9:35 - aside - I suppose this comment is from the other side of the aisle (kinda, sorta)...there's a montage in the art doc The Price of Everything (2018) where someone is recounting a story about Jeff Koons (metallic bunny, 30 assistants and sometimes copyright breaker) and they use a sequence from the Wolf of Wall Street and I was howling it so hilarious.

Also, listening to Damien Hirst talk about his For the Love of God sculpture (real skull with embedded diamonds) is such a trip, half for real, half trolling the rich.
Not to brag, but I had The Animal back in the day. Also, where's the Gulacy shoot interview?

In the Kayfabe Continuity of things I thought that was Wrath (from Michael Golden’s Batman Special #1) on the cover
I remember the "Bigfoot" game on NES. We rented it once. The game somehow turned car crushing into a button mashing exercise.
Wow, you guys really brought me back with that RC car monster truck talk at the end. Totally buried memory! The wired versions that you'd get for Christmas because they were more affordable, seeing the high end ones at Radio Shack! 😂

I did a 3 volume custom bind of every Moench/Gulacy collaboration and found this 2 part gem in my research! My favorite team. The other stories included are: Batman v Predator 2, Prey, Terror, Outlaws, Nightmares, Coldblood, SciSpy, Slash Maraud, Dragon Lord, 6 From Sirius I & II, and James Bond Sepent;s Tooth
On the subject of missing/lost artwork, do you guys have any whispers on what happened to the original artwork from Silver Surfer #4? Probably the best John Buscema artwork ever and brilliantly inked by his brother, Sal yet as far as I know the only thing that has ever appeared is a photocopy of the pencilled first page. There are other of course but the fact that none of the pages ever appeared, even as copies, suggests someone is holding the whole issue somewhere. Or am I just being too suspicious lol?? Might be an idea for an episode tho'.

We need a Steranko Captain America breakdown, iirc 111, 112, & 114. You did the fill in "Grand Design" Kirby issue 113. Ed always brings up the carnival arcade page with all the colors.
Thanks for sharing. I love Gulacy!! As a kid, I would wear out my MOKF books trying to draw his stuff. I still recall a nunchaku scene of Shang Chi vs The Cat with Shang doing a straight up Bruce Lee with the nunchuck moves that I tried to draw over and over!!

It's insane to me that these two issues have never been collected in a trade. 393 was the first issue of Batman i ever bought on the newstand. That cover just grabbed my attention.

I never was too big on Gulacy art but these two issues sure looks very, very good...
May have to revisit "Prey" which was made a few years later.
