- Big oof, talk about making the game hard for yourself! Today I'm doing a double battle taking only 5 units of shields to see what happens!
Shields (AKA spearmen) are made to be damage sponges and used right they can be ridiculously effective - just be prepared to do very little damage and almost no kills with them.
We'll look at a couple of tactics with the shield units and laugh at the hilariously low scores we get :)

When I see namkams or longbows running away I run into the fray to give them a chance. My units and I die so everyone else may live and fight another day.

Shield users and people like me that also bring shield units into matches finally get some credit. We get horrible score and berated by teammates saying we're so bad yet don't look at the 2mill damage my units took or additional 1.5mill damage I took for the team. Can't tell you how many times I've held the point while being attacked by 4+ enemy just to look at my team that aren't engaging because they don't want to lose any units.
Hat off to you sir! Playing shields is a thankless task and as you say, it looks like you have a bad score but the impact they have on the battle is undeniable!
Take this as validation; you are doing the right thing and your win rate will be higher because of it :)

That sounds familiar to me, I just had a game yesterday where I walked on the last point as attacker with Halberd Sergeant`s - not the best unit for this scenario. After I slowly but surely got picked apart by ranged units and 3 heros, the team finally decides stop watching and move their parked units in.
But to be fair I see way too many Stalwards camping as 3rd or 4th in line while some ranged units desperatly try pushing the final point.
For every good shield user there seems to be a counterpart of very bad ones. It is either a shield unit sitting behind every other unit of your team, or they are parked somewhere completly irrelevant to the current situation.
Probably owned by a dual blade or longbow going CoD style ^^
I personaly think contribution to a team isn`t shown on the scoreboard very well, and it is impossible to evaluate a players action to such a degree obviously. I myself have my fair share of bad games according to scoreboard although I contribute significantly!
You can do a ton of damage with archers, but since you are usally not close to a capture point and maybe don`t get many unit kills just raw damage you look extremly bad at the end.
If you would ask me, the amount of players who won`t risk their own units is ever increasing. It got quite tiresome recently.
@@AcceptYourDeath I agree, and I am definitely not perfect and maybe push fights I really shouldn't. However, when it's down to last point then what's the harm? They already track dmg taken by your units and your hero, so why not use that towards overall score. I don't care if I'm not #1 but if I take 1.5-2million in dmg and my units just as much you'd think that is pretty damn important. Especially when you look at the top players and they rarely reach 250k dmg taken. BECAUSE IM THE ONE GETTING MY ASS CHEWED, so they don't get killed in 1 hit by 3 enemy attacks at once.
I'm still kind of new, but whether you use shield units or not. you still be able to be top 5 /top 10 because they consider damage taken into consideration, no???
@@HotMusicForLife True, the damage you take as well as your units damage taken is used to get a score. However, they aren't weighed evenly, so you can be the player that takes 50% of the teams damage but still struggle to get into the top 10 and never the top 5 u less you get some kills.

Hey KnightStalker, great video! I was wondering why you called the falconettis a "weird unit." I started playing recently and I use them every game! So much fun to blast through those shields :P
Ah! To me they just don't really fit in with the rest of how the game plays out, they are an outlier oddball unit.
That doesn't mean they are bad or good, just that they don't fit into any catagory except their own - much like the flamethrowers.

I love my Imp Spears, however, with the cavalry and stalwart meta I get tired of them being just overrun or feeling useless. I am hoping that in the near future the game will give all shield units a bit of a buff and taking damage more recognition.
It's a shame your teams aren't taking pikes, pike n shield is perfect combo!
I agree with this. I often bring shields and am begging team mates to back me up with pikes. Of course they just stand back and let my shields die...

I feel like your map being so zoomed in really locks out a lot of vision and awareness... Having it set to the square and pulled back really let's you spot those flanking maneuvres before they happen.
Good memes with the loadout tho, bonus marks for no sweaty stalwarts/loyal guard or whatever they're called on frontier xD
Watched a few more of your vids, and honestly I get so anxious not knowing if you're being flanked or where the enemy ranged is positioned lmao
Game sense magic :) I like seeing closer with more detail, but have started trying to use enlarged square so its easier for people to view, so watch this space! :)

Your play-by-play commentary is beguiling and you offer some insights he doesn't, but the opposite is also true - i feel like he brushes with a broad stroke while you go for the finer details, both complimenting eachother and great pillars of the community - shame you dont have more subs yet but im sure they'll come soon enough

With exception to maidens and stalwarts. Stow your shield when spawning. It will boost your movement speed 👍 as soon as any enemies are near them, pull shields back out.
I have tried this and it doesnt seem to make any difference
Do you use longsword and shield, because if you do generally, then can you share your attribute points because I'm not sure how to go. Also how do you increase leadership? :)
Since the longswords recent buff I now put half in toughness and half in armor.
Bonus leadership is an attribute on armor pieces, check my previous video '40 Tips in Town' for a demo of it :)
@@KnightStalker Hi, I watched all of it but I'm probably not good at focusing, and I couldn't find the part or leadership. But there were things I didn't know like facing bots when I was below 60, and doctrines as well. Do you know at what part of the video you explained or how you gain leadership please. By the way you have so many unopened or used stuff in your inventory mine is literally nothing😂
Yah, it just sort of collects up in my backpack, I'm at the point where I don't really need anything lol.
Not sure of exact mark but the basic idea is that you can get extra leadership by crafting gear and get lucky with what randomly appears on that gear. In that video you can see it on my armor pieces as well
Lol imagine if in that second siege you did not get that 'free hussar' you mentioned (which turned out to be your only kill)

I play with the big axe and I bought a bow to play, but unfortunately I cannot equip it since it says different class, any help someone pls, I know its a stupid question.
I also played with those purple shields, I rented them an absolute beast, I used the push ability and disformed some long spear dudes...Also got MVU in the siege :)

The reason you cant equip a bow is that you are wearing heavy armor. Weapon use is divided up by armor weight - heavy, med or light.
If you equip a set of light armor it will allow you to use bow, short bow and dual blades.
Actually all shields is great with longbow. I can put them in place and focus on enemy ranged in peace :D

I'm suprised you didn't bring stalwarts, they are much better than imperial spear guard and actually deal with heroes pretty nicely

Stalwarts are a bit if a hybrid unit, I just wanted old school shields for this one
12:03 This is why I don`t like playing shield units or use tight formations usally, like the quarter-circle Paladins for example can use! The combo of a hero with a good knockdown and his unit close by is devestating.
Which brings me to my question, I am not sure what exactly KnightStalker meant by saying "They don`t block heros"
I remember several situation where I looked really silly trying to bash in some shield units as Longsword. As far as I know if a hero skill doesn`t have a knockdown and a shield unit has some degree of block recovery by skills or doctrines they hold against heros very well.
For example "With Valour" or "Shieldbash" from Longsword can open up units (they don`t suffer knockdown) and they do this animation where they lean back and throw their shield to the side. They are off-balance for a moment.
However, and this is only my guess it has to do with block recovery sometimes their shield barely moves and you see it only twitch a little. So unless some kind of knockdown happens shield units hold against heros.
Longsword clash of shields, shortsword thunder, musket bomb, maul literally anything, glave ult, longbow explosive arrow all break shield lines. Only heroes that cant are dual blades, spear, shortbow and nodachi. Poleaxe can sort of stagger them.
I just dont feel like shield lines can stop heroes
@@KnightStalker they should fix this!!! a block increase on the units should stop many heroes from doing that. this is really an issue i have also
It's just a thing that is and all can be countered except maybe longbow or musket who can do it from long range. A supported shield line can still repel them :)
Making Imperial Sields hero resistant like Iron Reapers or Imperial pikes are (just a little harder agaibst basic attacks, not immune) would def increase their popularity

I would prefer if hero abilites would have a hard limit on how many untis it can affect. I find it a bit silly and annoying when they flaten your entire stack with one move. Mostly Maul and Shortsword!
We only end up with another Stalward situation buffing other shield units which are almost impossible to deal with for other heros.
I think Stalwards have immunity during brace even against knockdowns?
Theoretically Muskets and Bow can knockdown units but they have a hard time following up and cleaning them up in time.
Best bet is a unit with charge in front of them and good timing I guess.
I would rather dial back the abilites for heros than buffing units more and more.
Every buff for a unit makes some other few irrelevant all of the sudden.
Idk if Frontier is different.
But you do wna focus on getting up that leaderboard.
Higher rating = more Purples, more Exp, more bronze, more loot.
And It's good for your seasonal quests to finish all of the seasons quests.

Keep having an issue where my team likes to take archers and do nothing when attacking in a siege.
I hear this happens a lot in Northern servers but we don't see it happen very often on Frontier.
Not sure what the solution is I'm sorry, but shields may help if you can keep creeping your line forward the archers may at least follow you. Just hope there are pikes around to help :/
In EU servers no trouble at all. Only like 1 Person takes archers, the rest takes tier 1 units because they have a T5 unit for the inside.

What veyerancy for ironcap spearmen?
I use bottom line and extras I put in top line. I'm not sure if this is particularly efficient but I don't really use them because they are a rather poor performing unit. I prefer the Black Dragon Spearmen
Ironcaps are great for defense and offense because I hide artillery inside of them

Their formation is def the right shape!
They really need to adjust the point system. Killing 100 peasant means nothing to me while a single shield unit making the initial push and taking the blunt of the damage means everything.

Ah you didn't use Stalwarts - the meta shield of the season!
They dont really fit what I was trying to show. In random battles people use Stalwarts as super saiyan pike militia, nobody uses them as team support shield lines.
Will cover hybrid units like them another time

I use stalwarts as shields often, just play really laid back and DONT use brace aggressively, you also leak too much missile fire in brace, use it reactively if they push, it's overlooked because brace deals so much damage

I do have a seperate vidro called "Stawarts as a shieldwall"
I like using spear sergeant as a shield unit because they are quite tanky and deal a lot of dmg.

same here, but when i joined my house they advised me to get stalwarts. And believe me spear sergeants dont compete. If you put them 1v1 stalwarts win without any loses and barely any damage. So you might wanna consider upgrading them, but it takes a while to complete the challenges.
@@kater9951 I know but I cant get stalwarts because I havent finish the quest for the grenade guy, they wants me to defeat rebel camp in the open world but In too lonely
@@limjingheng186 so clearing ruins doesnt count as rebel camp for this quest? Because in weekly challanges they do. And just spam in local if anyone to one or join a discord or tc.

Are you using shiltron? Shiltron formation is BAD, it gets shield units wiped
black dragon is bettrr than ironcap?
Only because ironcaps dont have a line formation or a heal. These are key shield abilities.
A musket, longsword, longbow or especially glaive and maul will smash squares or circles of shields when they are in tight formation. Artillery and trebs will also hit the whole unit.
Wide lines are best for protecting your team from ranged, too.
I get lots of kills with spear sergeants
No doubt, they are a good solid unit! I can't seem to make them work for my though, too hybridy I think - not that Ive used them in quite some time now!

Old units lose power in the game and i dont like it the game wants us to spend on new units.
Of course, they are a business. But, most of the tech tree units are perfectly valid choices. Only a handful are truely power creeped
Ye pls just call them Landsharks :D they are definitely not called "Landschneckts" (thats what a german understands when someone tries to pronounce it). Its literaly the worst (still quite funny) butchery of a german word i ever heard xD
Us native English speakers are just terrible! It's often the only language we get taught (which is frankly just stupid), so we tend to find other languages quite hard.
