      @@bradhaines3142 ifixit is acting in their own interest? Of course they are, every business that's ever existed acts in their own interest. What matters is that *my* interests as a consumer align with that. I'll buy an ifixit tool kit once and then be able to fix all my own stuff for free forever, rather than have to pay over and over again for "expert repair services" or be forced to buy a whole new device over some bullshit issue that should have an easy, inexpensive solution that I could do myself if I wasn't locked out by corporate greed and malfeasance. Ifixit is the better alternative to the Apples of the world any day of the week.

      @@bradhaines3142 Maybe, but they don't need us to be allowed to fix new components to get their sales, we have these types of kits in our home anyway for the odd time we need to tighten something or work on something we can fix out of warranty or for hobbies that require the tools.

    • @raynmanshorts9275
      @raynmanshorts9275 4 роки тому

      @@wasd____ Consider this: Do you think companies like having to repair or replace *everything* that's under warranty all the time? Of course not. They'd rather people that know what they're doing be able to repair the things themselves. The problem is people that *don't* know what they're doing rooting around and breaking things. Because ifixit's target consumer is people that know what they're doing, naturally their target consumer's interests align with their own. My interests align with ifixit's. But I'm capable of recognizing that while also recognizing that other interests are valid as well, and that this goal has negative consequences on everyone. The difference is that I knowingly accept those negative consequences because my estimation has the positives outweigh the negatives for me.

    You lose the spring action of the backplate putting the washers there. You need to put it between the head of the screw and the backplate you should probably correct it and see if it helps.

    • @ERBarratt
      @ERBarratt 5 років тому +15

      It's not about that, putting the washers there moves the screw up, preventing the screw from bottoming out. What he failed to say is that the washers hole needs to be big enough to let the threaded post through it so it gets pulled through and increases the pressure on the silicone. You can also put 4 bits of plastic / washers under each of the four the cross bars on the square of the spring weight which helps even more.

    • @joshbauer5039
      @joshbauer5039 5 років тому +54

      I agree 100% that the washers r in the wrong place. I agree that the screws r bot bottoming out but by the same token, u created space between the place at the point it is supposed to provide pressure. Place the washers between the screw heads and the backplate. This will keep them from bottoming out while increasing the backplate pressure against the necessary thermal sensitive areas.

    • @glennwilburn1880

      The washers under the arms alleviates the tension and having the washers on top wouldnt make a difference in that sense, since the arms would just be right back where they were. The washers on top would in fact keep the screws from bottoming out though. If the little black rubber pads in the center were a little thicker to put more pressure down at that point it would work. That is were it matters most. Not the outside.

    For those who watching this video: thermal pads on reference (turbine) 5700 xt are 1mm thick, all of them. They are different by softness, but it doesn't matter. You'll need approx 1 of 120x20x1 pad to cover 8 memory chips and about half of pad for other parts (in sum 1.5 of 120x20x1 pads, so buy 2 of them ). 1 gramm of thermal paste will be enough to cover chip. When gonna assemble do not forget to connect fan wires. Washers are optional.

    Hey Jay, you don't want those washers in between the spring and the back plate. You want them on the outside of the spring, so that it puts more pressure on the heat sink against the GPU. By having the washers in between the spring in the back plate, you're actually reducing the pressure on the die side unless you bottom the spring out completely - then you're just tensioning the screws as if there was no spring involved at all. I hope this makes sense, but I think you need to move the washers based on what I saw.

    • @robertotarter7839
      @robertotarter7839 5 років тому +6

      actually, what you want is putting a spacer under those black plastic spacer he shows here ua-cam.com/video/U6_9gl3cYU8/v-deo.html , basically that will move everything a few tenths of mm up from the pcb, spring, screws and heatsink.

    • @prjndigo
      @prjndigo 5 років тому

      You don't actually need the spring at all, you can get long screws and a block of wood and crank it in. Honestly the spring does NOTHING for applying pressure to the die correctly. It hasn't served a purpose since the era in which GPU heatsinks weighed more than 70grams

    On some early models of the R9 390X, the gpu was recessed below the height of the surrounding die block. It needed to be raised to make contact with the water cooler heatsink. A copper shim (2) needed to be perfectly sandwiched between the water cooler surface and the gpu. It made a slippery mess if it didn't get correctly mashed together. Took hours trying to get it right.

    Greetings! Tech and artist here~
    for polishing heatsink i am using fine metal sponge~ that can do the trick to polish the copper mirror like (and worth to wash it with isopropyl after polishing). You can use fine toothbrush (for children) to remove paste around smds without the fear of breaking anything off.

    Put the washers between the bracket and the screw head to work. It would add more pressure to the bracket to press harder on the pcb! Good luck!

    you shoud place some paper on the plastic of the retention bracket.
    On the screws the washers dont chane the pressure, unless you over "screw" it

    Ideally you would add spacers where the plastic pads are on the bracket, getting them to stay there may be the hard part.

    So the washer lets you apply more pressure to the memory thermal pads to squeeze the chip and heatsink closer together to make up for the thinner paste thickness. Maybe replacing the memory pads with paste would make the heatsink to chip distance better, . . .or perhaps measure the thickness of the thermal pad and use a copper sheet the size of the heatsink that is less than half the thickness of the old thermal pad to make up the gap and apply paste to one or both sides of the sheet? you would need to make sure not to over tighten if using the sheet.

    From someone who did way more:
    - replaced thermal pads on VRM with a thermal strip
    - screwed in screws a bit more day by day
    - used liquid metal on the gpu die
    its not a quick-and-done mod, because the washers become warm and flexible so you can screw them in more. overall it got me 20C reduction in every metric.

    What about also exchanging the thermal pads for the ram chips with paste? Will probably not change much for the ram cips, but these pads might hinder full contact between heatsink and gpu due to their thickness

    It began bouncing around less because it wasn't having to throttle as much, thus able to maintain a more stable clock. You'll get better results yet if you do as Ryboodle suggests.

    consider that rough machined surface may have been intentional, polishing it reduced the surface area engaging the thermal paste...

    Try putting the washers between the fasteners and the spring plate dealio you should see better temps then that.

    I have a 5700xt and I couldn't figure out how to squeeze extra performance out of it. I kept experiencing instability when trying to manually tune the VRAM above 1800 (I thought that was my only option). You showing its okay to max the power slider in the Radeon software gave me the balls to do it and WHAT DO YOU KNOW! An extra 100+pts in the Heaven Benchmarks at 1440P and 5fps!

  • @Wooble57

    I'd like to see what happens if you added a copper shim in there. Even with the extra pressure from the screws with washers it doesn't seem like the cooler is making good contact.

    please test temps with and without the io shield, and without the extension slot metal separator that obstructs the airflow output of the card.
    Do some kind of comparison at low rpm 1600/1800, those rpm would benefit more from less air restriction. And are rpm noise friendly that most users are using.

    Plastic pads on the center square should have been raised instead.
    This would increase spring rate and prevent bottoming out the screws.
