The part of Liana saying "mom" is so terrifying and beautiful! How she croaks the word out because she has not spoken in a long time. This game is art.
That awful disconnect between the comfort of morning with warm lighting and birds and the unsettling things that follow at night is great at keeping you off center, that's for sure.
For me, it gives the impression of a family waking up one morning greeting each other and enjoying hearing the birds The only difference being that they're all robots
There are so many red flags in this game. Really good job on the "creepy" / "wtf is going on" feeling. I am personally annoyed with the lack of choice but at the same time it does add to the creep factor of possibly being a helpless - ( or feeling hopeless and helpless to resist ) - little girl....
I saw some confusion in the comments, so i thought I'd clear things up ✌🥰 There are 4 entities at play inside the player character, first off! You, the player, are what they call the Angel, or just Angel, later on. The physical components of the character is Liana, who is the biological component of the body, the core, which is the representative of the real Liana, and the AI or Interface, which is the pilot of the body where Angel and the core cannot act. As a whole, all 4 components act as 'Liana', but the real Liana is dead. A little girl dies to unknown cause and the father tries to bring her back by putting machines and AI into her corpse, potentially even reviving her brain, in which case she still lost all/most her memories due to it losing all neurological activity. Think having to restart your phone as normal sleep and a hard reset being total neurological shut down. Your phone can still function as a phone, but it has nothing of what you put on it anymore. The dad sends her to live with mom who follows a script meant to help 'Liana' to remember herself and to develope her brain/AI, but as 'Liana' starts to clash with what her AI wants for her, it starts breaking beaking integral structures have been compromised. Due to this, 'Liana' starts to take more control. As 'Liana' is taking control, the AI is desperate for structure but since it has been broken, it can only grasp at things that should be assured to work. The AI starts to seek out mother, as father told 'Liana' to listen to her mother. 'Liana' is forced to comply with this, though it doesn't seem that she herself despises the thought of being with her mom either. The relentless chase that 'Liana' then gives, starts to terrify her mother who continues to try to run from her and to reassure the brother that it will be okay. 'Liana' finds mom and as she's being told off, is desperate to communicate but can only say "mom" given some strain. This causes the mother more panic and she admits to 'Liana' that she is not the real daughter. This, coming from mother, breaks the AI of directive, now knowing that it is not what it was manufactured to be. The AI, free of structure, begins to be personified. 'Liana' starts to lash out due to frustration over how she's being forced to live, not that she wants to die but that she doesnt want to live so restrictedly due to her AI forcing her around and scaring the people around her. In one life, she tries to end it by attacking her mom, but ends up being killed instead, as the AI forces her to comply to her mother's demands. In later lives, she spends them gaining more information in order to find a way to end the cycle. As she does, she unearths that she is a cyborg, though moreso leaning towards android, and that her family has been through this time and time again. As she gains access to the cellar basement, she finds long sprawling corridors which are not properly mapped out and/or put heavy restrictions on so that she struggles to make way. 'Liana' breaks through the restrictions, though, and finds her way to an area underground near the barn. This area has a terminal and a large pile of ash, the ash being of old models of herself that have failed. This unlocks more of her memories. The AI, core & Liana, or the concept of Liana, unify with Angel and each other, becoming it's own entity at last. 'Liana' builds a staircase from her own cremations to escape the cellar and, still carrying the bushel of apples, comes to her dad who is dropping off a new 'Liana'. Dad recognizes this and that this version is different and begins to drive her somewhere. In the car, he goes over a lot of what was discussed but then is alluded to give her a nicname. The nicname is Red, I assume after the bushel of red apples, and is to reoccur in Enigma Machine, which this game is a prequel of
I didn't want to add this to the comment itself, as it's more theory as well as plot irrelevant, but I don't think the brother is dead. Red is able to commune with the idea of Liana and is able to reclaim the memories of her former self, but she is never seen genuinely communing with the dead. I think that as the family had to deal with all the 'Liana's, the brother became more and more of a recluse, as he was obviously very close with the real Liana. It's very stressful for him to have to deal with Red as it's basically Liana haunting him without even knowing who he is
Wow. This was well-executed. Especially finding out what happened to Liana and her "core". I was thinking so many theories (Cloning, "Ghost in a Shell", human trafficking and brain lobotomies) and how the father was so hopeful in "reviving" his daughter. As for the son and mother.... I really felt sorry for them because they were repeatedly traumatized and they were losing their mental health. Liana's soul merging with the terminal was creepy, but she wanted to know what happened and why. Pretty cool sci-fi horror game that kept me on the edge of my seat. Thanks for sharing and playing it! :)
@@panetierbread3510 same. As i see it - merging Lianas "core" (brain? consciousness?) with her new cyborg body changes her irreversibly. They cant get old Liana back. SHE IS DEAD. Lianas core in new body + interaface = new intity. Mother cant accept it. Father can and does. Sorry if my english is bad - i am not native english speaker.
Oh my. What a game, what a treat. The roller-coaster of being scared, realizing you are the one scaring others and different realizations are so well done. I especially like, how the poor graphics and voices are explained by, perhaps, the imperfect machinery (mom does say, that main character probably sees them differently). Kinda wish we got to see our 'angel' at least ones. Developer was really teasing with those mirrors.
For those who haven't played the game, ABG made it shorter (thanks to many cuts) than it is in reality. 1h30 seems long but you can spend even more time on it : *SPOILER :* The game doesn't hold your hand and you really have to be killed a few times before finally discovering the truth, when and where to hide on Friday by restarting your life as a new doll. I managed to do it on the fourth week. Some people will find it tedious, but it's also really clever since the player represents the mind of Liana, which still exists and learn from her past experiences. A very disturbing but great game. I really recommend it and would like to know the next part of the story.
@Wimpleton Duck Had to redo the game just for you :) You can talk to him again on Friday Night, when Mother and Father are arguing. He says : "Don't mind those two. This happens every week. It's like they're living in different worlds entirely." Also, there is indeed no way to see your brother in the game...

what is the tell for figuring out that mother is not "feeling unwell in her room" on thursday morning? that you can find her in the orchard shed. is it just trial and error on multiple playthroughs?
you wonder if the girl was abused by her mum when she was alive. look at the way she says "now's our chance. kill her". conflicting love and hate within. She feels like she has no voice to talk. She was forced to eat dirt, but can now say No. it's a real treasure trove
The mother saying I hope you never have to find out what that is when showing you the barn, to the end when you reach the barn and she says I knew you would find your way here eventually. She hoped the daughter wouldn't have to be killed, but in the end knew she would eventually find it and have to be killed anyways. Also nice touch with the barn burning Sunday night, old body was being taken care of.
They wanted to have her very much, and the only way was using AI and the brain of the deceased girl, that they, indeed, further in time, had to kill other times (but the statue in the graveyard is regarded as the first time her died). Somehow she was alive, and somehow something else (enigma) was inside her too. So when machine gets broken by confusing information from the environment, the conflicts break character into two or three or four (Liana, Angel, Core and Interface). They all seem to be different things conflicting. What was not clear for me is why it goes so bad when her objective is to bee with her mother and what contamination (in thee exterior) means.
@@salsichalivre5401 From my understanding, the mother is creeped out by the daughter's conduct as it's obedience and determination are quite different from how Liana really was. She mentions something about her determination and hints how the real one was different in one part of the dialogue in one part. Also, at some point it's core objective and the commands started to present conflict, with the AI favoring the main one and being able to disobey some orders, which she shouldn't be able to and made the mother freak out even more. Last but not least, it also seems that, just as the mother looks artificial to the AI, she looks just as creepy to the mother. I think that was mentioned in the barn scene with the knife when she says something like "I may look as unnatural to you as you seem to me". The sad thing is that, having the daughter's "real core", Liana was actually there in a way, not understanding why she was doing things that she didn't want to and not aware of any of her "creepy behaviour" as well as not understanding the rejection coming from her mother, who also suspects that there might be something left from her daughter there but isn't able to deal with her in her current state regardless of that. Anyway, that's what I got from the video, I hope that it helped and sorry if something isn't clear, English isn't my first language.
Wow. I've never seen a game like that. I got the things weren't quite right when mother asked to sleep outside. But I thought there was something wrong with her, not the girl. Brother's phrase about the food was pretty creepy. When I saw the sculpture in the graveyard I completely got it. I'm glad father didn't abandon the girl.
Well, Liana's sculpture might also suggest that her parents are ready to bury her when she dies, but that's obviously not true after you discover the things that are happening at the end.
This was genuinely amazing. I loved the themes of breaking away from your programming and life objectives; a core facet of life is not truly knowing where you'll end up at the end of it. Thanks for showcasing this wonderful game and major props to the devs at Enigma Studio.
1:27:27 Terminal:”how do we know we’re on the right path?” “Liana”: “we don’t.” Terminal:”Will we ever know?” “Liana”: “We will when we reach the end.”
Well, this was not what I expected, and I love that. I'm seriously not sure who I felt sorrier for by the end, the mother and brother, or the player character. Although Dad seems to not mind the end results for some reason...
0:42 I never want to hear the phrase "it took a lot out of you" in the context of surgery, bevause it makes me wonder how much exactly did they take out of me without putting it back.
If it's something pretending to be me it's pretending to be me really badly, judging by the fact they don't let "me" even look at "myself" in the mirror.
Simply mind-blowing, as expected from Enigma Studio. The plot, the atmosphere, the concept itself, all of them are executed in such a great way, and to find out it's also connected to The Enigma Machine? I am speechless.
Can't believe this hasn't already been played by other people, this is a real gem of a game and I'm only halfway through lol. No jumpscares but stuff like the "you can't go to sleep with someone in your room" are so scary
I wonder if we as the protag are supposed to be a kid or just "programmed" / drugged or some thing into thinking we're one. Or may be we are just really short. *shrug*
The atmosphere sounds, music.... you can almost taste the mood. Damn good job on that in my opinion. For being so unnerving and unforgettable, ... just amazing audio.
A lot of horror games I can kinda zone out and just seem to know when something will happen next. But this one...I didn't want to miss a single detail because the progression was so well done.
30 mins in and my theory so far us that wE, Liana actually died and now we're some cyborg corpse thing but we look kinda fucked up so no mirrors, also the transitions on when it says *monday evening* or smthng is probably smthng in our system telling us the time. also when smthng happens we tell ourselves wut happend like *mother is very proud of what u did* or smthng that could be the robotic side telling the brain or vice versa, also the fact that we eat dirt and *ingest its nutrients* is also a thing.. also we never had to use the bathroom. and just lil subtle hints on us actually being dead and probably being a cyborg thing edit: i was spot on
Just imagine talking to someone who is very obviously dead, but a mechanical implant in their brain is making them talk and behave robotically like a puppet
*TLDR: For me I felt blocking the mirrors was because the machine seeing itself would cause programming conflicts. Like, Liana still thought she existed. She only existed as a core within the machine though. Which is a conflict with both her and the machine's sense of self because neither are who they believe/understand themselves to be.* 👇 More explanation below 👇 For instance, when you look at your reflection you see yourself through your OWN eyes. You can't physically see yourself through anyone (or "anything") else's eyes. But Liana is only a core, so what would she see reflected in the mirror? Can a core even visualize itself at all? As far as the machine goes, a machine or programming can't comprehend it's own reflection the way sentient things can. Like Alexa & Siri can't say "oh hey, that's me I'm seeing in the mirror." So an AI type robot would process it's reflection as it does any other object, not necessarily as "itself." Putting all of this together -- Liana doesn't have a physical body, so the machine would be the thing reflected in the mirror. However, Liana is still sentient right? Her core is stuck within. So she'd be possibly seeing a body that didn't belong to her, while the machine simultaneously isn't able to process that it's looking at itself. That would have to be confusing since she and the machine are intertwined (they require each other in order to function). And I took it as, that's not something the programming was equipped to handle. The "confusion" of a reflection would glitch the system, cause a meltdown or whatever.
All I know is those apple trees wouldn’t grow next to the ocean in the salt spray and especially with the land flooding like that they would be dead in a few days even if it was fresh water.
I don't remember the last time a video game (whether in walkthrough format or when actually played) made me cry. This one did. I expected this to be one of those PS1 style games, but the graphics were surprisingly good, especially the outside - stunningly beautiful. The twist in the middle was kind of predictable, but everything that came after turned out to be horribly relatable.
soo the real liana is already dead and her father trying to resurrect her by using some kind of liana's core and make a robot that have personality like real liana by using that core? but the mother scared about the robot and pretend that it is her daughter. is that right?
From what I understand it's a continuous process. Android Liana spends a week with her mother, gets "killed", the father spends a week fixing and upgrading the AI, then it's the mothers house again and so on. We don't know how many times this happened, but you can tell that the mother is being annoyed with this process. The father on the other hand is determined to keep going.
I truly love the concept of this game 💯 It's a story about a mother suffering from post traumatic stress disorder over the lost of her daughter named Liana, who was severely sick and in and out the hospitals all the time. The painful hospital stays as mother and father watched her daughter slowing drift away into death's hands drove mother into a deep depression, so the father is optimistically "trying" to keep the family together. He figures he can help mother cope with the lost by building a narrative for the family, but here is where things haven't been working out for them for a long while now - and mother just ain't having it. She's growing tired of playing along with false feelings of love for (if haven't noticed) an android interjected with the memories of their late daughter Liana. I also came to conclusion that there's also the possibility mother my have even harmed her REAL daughter some kind of way, because there are certain moments in the game, like Liana's brother tells her she's being fed dirt; mother's deattached demeanour indicates she can stand to look at Liana, and that she does not really seem to be close with her child/ren; she never wants to be seen walking alongside Liana in their home or outside. She even had the por girl sleep out on the dirt path of the house's roadside, I also assume in hopes a car would run over her. And keeps all the mirrors boarded up, constantly reminding Liana, 'It's for your own good...' Wow! 😬 "Bro, what a loving mother..." Lol All jokes aside, this is a great game, I'd advised anyone if you accidentally stumbled upon this treasure as I have - check it out. The story plot is WICKED!
I usually come here out of curiosity for the game, but this one is like a kick to the gut. I remember people I used to trust abusing me inside my room, they told me that it is all for my good and that they love me, and I didn't know I was abused until I reach 18. I never had the chance to rebel.
Already, Liana's parents are a bit strange; an uneasy feeling. What's up with mother!? 10:04 Two places at once? Thirty-two min in & this game is really WEIRD! But I'm too far in to stop or turn back.
Wow! This was much better than I thought it would be! I was expecting a typical "flick on the light switches so your creepy mother doesn't kill you" scenario. But this was really mysterious, disturbing, and fascinating! All in such a simple setting too. Great game!
... bruh. No lie. I was straight glued to the screen the entire time. Because for once, the weird schtit happening on screen ACTUALLY kind of got explained... And was still really weird and cool. I wouldn't even remotely call this game scary, but it has all the hallmarks of a proper eerie experience... And I wasn't even the one playing!
Wow what a journey. This is a rare gem of a game that really make you think about the human condition, love, loss, and grief. Thank you ABG for playing this for us!
15:40 "You cannot sleep when someone is in your room" I don't think I've ever seen a more masterful way of instilling foreboding than that single, simple sentence. Just amazing.
Another low graphic game i think i can play this on my potato(maybe not :( it looks good)thanks for uploading :) i played many games on my potato because of u
Towards the end of the game is even more scary . At first its just a creepy mother , then she isn't scary at all and you feel like a total predator ! So you feel like the daughter in the beginning, and towards the end you feel like the "Thing".
The daughter is a robot and the dad keep replace her + that why she only eat same food can’t understand a lot of things and I kind think the brother is dead, the only one that okay is the dad the mom is kind off too like she always scared the new kid but the dad keep make the new one that make the wife depressed because it never be the same
I like to think that every time announcement is Liana suddenly stopping and just staring idly. Hence why Mother starts to grow more scared and emotionally erratic.
I haven't finished the video yet but if it weren't for the music cues, I wouldn't have figured this game to be a psychological horror at all. It honestly seems more like an android family doing their best to imitate their creators, while also coming to grips with the injury of their daughter. It's both sad and a bit endearing.
I’m 44 minutes in, and this is so sad.. I read the comments which kind of spoilered to me what’s going on, but not everything so I’m pretty confused. I wonder what happened to the little girl, she seems to be some kind of robot.. oh dang. She seems to still be in there. Oh that’s so sad!!
@@gooeykit6074 thank you, but sometimes I just see morning, afternoon, evening and night going by. It is how it is. I think I suffer lesser just letting it pass by instead of struggling wanting to get better.
So the mother's psychologically tormenting and then killing these poor robots and the father is not just doing jack shit to stop her but actively making things worse by saddling the poor little robot with a ton of inhuman behavior requirements (obey everything mother says, the timeouts, the fact that the interface can boss the core around), instead of just letting the part of the machine that is actually Liana (the "core", I think?) do what it wants? These two are just the worst people. I really hope at least one of them dies horribly before the end of the game. ...I am disappoint. Also why the fuck is the father hiding his face from Liana?
I feel like this game is a creative way to turn lack of development experience into a feature. Was it just easier to put tape over the mirror than to implement reflections? Who knows!
i think its more about the appearance of the character. like they didnt want it to see itself and cause a memory leak? at least thats my interpretation
wow, incredible game. dialogue is perfect. I thought this was going to be about a manipulative mother, wowee I was wrong! All elements of this game are so entertaining.
This is reeeeally good, and I was honestly hoping the Spoilers: ... core stuff would work out, and the soul inside the core would be able to take control and the mom and brother could live together with her/it
I've almost forgotten, how Black Mirror creeped me out in a way, sometimes I could not feel well. This one has a moral: NEVER MESS WITH MOTHER... ...nature...
I don't know what more creepy: the fact that the mom ( and possibly the brother) is hiding a dirty little secret, or the fact that the mom has a doppelganger.......... I mean they're red flags that something is not right: 1) She's not allowed to use the basement bathroom 2) The bathroom mirror is taped up 3) she's not allowed in her parents room ( which is sometimes normal unless the parents are hiding something) 4) the warning message SURVIVAL NOTICE: DO NOT ENTER THE BARN was repeated ( big red flag)
What I have learned from this is that being a cyborg is not easy. They have all sorts of internal conflicts, confusions, unclear motivations, etc. We really need to find ways to help the cyborgs in our world. We can't let them suffer like this.
the music reminds me so much of the compositions that Klein (this great experimental artist) have made. very ominous and eerie yet familiar. if anyone likes the journey this music takes you on, I’d recommend her Lifetime album for sure.
Such a cool concept. One of the things I like the most is that, in a way, Liana’s situation kind of contextualizes why the game literally looks the way it does, all odd and fake looking.

Red is able to commune with the idea of Liana and is able to reclaim the memories of her former self, but she is never seen genuinely communing with the dead. I think that as the family had to deal with all the 'Liana's, the brother became more and more of a recluse, as he was obviously very close with the real Liana. It's very stressful for him to have to deal with Red as it's basically Liana haunting him without even knowing who he is

you wonder if the girl was abused by her mum when she was alive. look at the way she says "now's our chance. kill her". conflicting love and hate within.

30 mins in and my theory so far us that wE, Liana actually died and now we're some cyborg corpse thing but we look kinda fucked up so no mirrors, also the transitions on when it says *monday evening* or smthng is probably smthng in our system telling us the time. also when smthng happens we tell ourselves wut happend like *mother is very proud of what u did* or smthng that could be the robotic side telling the brain or vice versa, also the fact that we eat dirt and *ingest its nutrients* is also a thing.. also we never had to use the bathroom. and just lil subtle hints on us actually being dead and probably being a cyborg thing
edit: i was spot on
Big brain
Just imagine talking to someone who is very obviously dead, but a mechanical implant in their brain is making them talk and behave robotically like a puppet
*TLDR: For me I felt blocking the mirrors was because the machine seeing itself would cause programming conflicts. Like, Liana still thought she existed. She only existed as a core within the machine though. Which is a conflict with both her and the machine's sense of self because neither are who they believe/understand themselves to be.*
👇 More explanation below 👇
For instance, when you look at your reflection you see yourself through your OWN eyes. You can't physically see yourself through anyone (or "anything") else's eyes. But Liana is only a core, so what would she see reflected in the mirror? Can a core even visualize itself at all?
As far as the machine goes, a machine or programming can't comprehend it's own reflection the way sentient things can. Like Alexa & Siri can't say "oh hey, that's me I'm seeing in the mirror." So an AI type robot would process it's reflection as it does any other object, not necessarily as "itself."
Putting all of this together -- Liana doesn't have a physical body, so the machine would be the thing reflected in the mirror.
The "confusion" of a reflection would glitch the system, cause a meltdown or whatever.

soo the real liana is already dead and her father trying to resurrect her by using some kind of liana's core and make a robot that have personality like real liana by using that core? but the mother scared about the robot and pretend that it is her daughter. is that right?
From what I understand it's a continuous process. Android Liana spends a week with her mother, gets "killed", the father spends a week fixing and upgrading the AI, then it's the mothers house again and so on. We don't know how many times this happened, but you can tell that the mother is being annoyed with this process. The father on the other hand is determined to keep going.

I truly love the concept of this game 💯
It's a story about a mother suffering from post traumatic stress disorder over the lost of her daughter named Liana, who was severely sick and in and out the hospitals all the time.
And keeps all the mirrors boarded up, constantly reminding Liana, 'It's for your own good...'
Wow! 😬
"Bro, what a loving mother..." Lol
All jokes aside, this is a great game, I'd advised anyone if you accidentally stumbled upon this treasure as I have - check it out. The story plot is WICKED!
