In the case that I am using an overdrive to push an amp that is already breaking up or distorted, I always like to put the amp's gain right at it's "sweet spot". Then I adjust the OD or boost from there. It keeps everything tight and removes a lot of mud from your tone. Sometimes, pushing an amp or pedal too far results in mush and other unwanted frequencies. That's where gain stacking comes in handy besides just "adding more gain" to your tone.

      Hey there
I don't know much about amps
When we put the od in front of the amp
It drives the clean channel i suppose
And if we are in the gain channel it drives an already drove amp
      Right?
So if an amp has no gain channel?
We ll need two od pedals?
      Thanks 😊

@@dimitris70 Man, that honestly depends on many variables and personal preferences. There are cases where you can get away with simply one overdrive/distortion that can cover a lot of ground, such as a DS-1 or Revv G3. Hell, SRV's recorded tones on many records were him simply plugged into a few screaming supers and vibroverbs and almost never used the tube screamer unless he needed a solo boost.

I had to stop around 10 minutes and say thank you. I still consider myself a novice or beginner at guitar but even when playing drums for so many years I realized watching guitarist, they think it’s the guitar or pickups that effects the sound but the effects plugged in and how you dial your amp contributes a lot to sound as well and they seem to ignore or dismiss it. You mentioning and demonstrating the use of the pedal with Slow Dancing is a prime example of how effective pedals and tone shaping in general are essential in making a sound.

  • @rickschneider3887

I use this pedal to give a desired mid range frequency bump to my tone and attenuate any unwanted high frequencies as well. This allows you to tame amps with too much top end and bass plus adds a midrange presence to a scooped EQ sounding amp. I start by setting the gain to 0 then I bring the output volume up until I reach unity volume level so it doesn’t push the amp into further break up.Then I dial in the midrange frequency I want with the tone knob and then I roll back the highs and lows to my own taste. The Tube Screamer is a great pedal to create your overall tone with and allows you to get your desired sound with any amp (clean or dirty).

I’ve used a Tubescreamer as an underdrive before. I set the amp to a clean tone before it break up and the the TS below unity with the gain all the way down. My core tone will be the TS on and the “boost” is with the TS off.

One other great trick expanding on your advice to experiment and not get locked into the habit of finding “the perfect spot” on the dials and leaving them there: over the past year I’ve been buying cool old knobs with no markings on them like Tele knurled knobs or old Gibson speed knobs that are so smoky that you can’t read the numbers anymore. I replace the stock knobs on my pedals and not only does this make them look unique but it also immediately causes me to use my ears instead of my eyes to dial in the days tone. I’m still looking for the “sweet spot” but it’s the sweet spot of the day or of the song I’m playing. And if you play two amps together which really takes your sonic journey next level, then it’s all about finding the mixtures of tones that make so many varied cocktails of rock elixir. Overdrive is a hell of a tonic and I get myself drunk on it regularly.

Good job on the video. Looks like you had your amp on the Fat setting but I missed your EQ settings. I'm enjoying my Supersonic 22. I'm assuming a person could set the Burn channel to be slight overdrive and run an overdrive into that getting simular effect as two stacked drives.

Dang, through that thin jangly sound (I know the super-sonic is not a "thin" amp), the tubescreamer as a cleanish boost with the drive way low is actually super nice to listen to, and seems like it feels fun to play. I've actually never owned a tubescreamer, but every time I hear one, I wonder why there's a stigma about them. I should probably get one :)
