“All culture is disposable.” That’s important to keep in mind for things that seem unimportant, but also for things that mean a lot to us personally. Especially our favorite parts of culture. When we put certain media on pedestals we can lose sight of what’s really important in life, that’s how we get toxic fandoms. It’s important to remember that Shakespeare wrote plays quickly, for a paycheck, and the only reason they are remembered today is because his cast preserved their copies of the scripts he gave them to memorize. Shakespeare himself understood the disposability of the work he did, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good stories

I agree with the "lacks the lows and lacks the highs" of the first installment.
    BUT,
The bigger issue I had with "1978" really came into focus when I finished watching "1666", because you can skip this movie entirely and it does not impact the story. It is a good movie, but it only provides a wee-little-bit of context and detail to the other movies, so it is a bad chapter in the larger narrative.

    • @AmandaDuncil

Part 2 does suffer from middle movie syndrome (which I'm now making up if that terms doesn't already exist for movies) although I personally loved it. It doesn't progress the plot much, but I don't think it was entirely pointless. It feels like a classic red herring act, but the lead into 3 felt clunky and...just not good, but it might be a problem with 3 than 2. I think the flashback mechanic cheapened the series overall--all they had to do was bleed on some bones and the answer is given to them? After all the slow-paced, trial-and-error mystery solving they'd been doing? Okay, sure I guess. Feels a little unearned.

I feel like the main point of Cindy's arc wasnt that wanting to go to college and straighten things out was an inherently bad thing to do because she turned her back on her community by trying to escape it intact. But that she was turning her back on *herself* by suppressing everything she was trying to fit into the ideal model member of society. I feel like that's why they emphasize the shirt as her symbol of selling out rather then repeating the college thing.
I understand why one could read the wrong message so it's a super fair critisim but I feel like spending focus clearing up any potential misunderstandings rather then just focusing down on it's message as hard as it can would have problably just muddied up the point that shady side is doomed until it can resolve it's generational trauma

Mildred talking about the murder being disturbing to watch because it should be cause it's murder immediately had me thinking of the show Slasher. I honestly put it on randomly cause I was in the mood for some gore, only to be genuinely disturbed. And don't get me started on seasons two and three. Hands down the most upsetting slasher stuff I've ever seen, it made this 'kill bait' genre truly scary for the first time since it's inception which was the last time people watched it to get scared instead of just wanting to see gore. There were kills and - other things - that actually made me feel guilty for wanting nothing but gore from this show

Not to argue with you, even though that's exactly what I'm about to do, but...
When you inveigh against people dumping on one of the leads because she wants to go to college, and this is presented as disloyalty to her background, I can only assume you didn't grow up in or near an American small town. Because that's literally the message many of us grew up with. I have spent twenty years battling the internalized guilt that comes with being told, for the first 18 years of your life, that wanting to improve yourself, or to pursue a career path that your dad didn't, or even wanting to live more than a 90-minute drive from where you were born, makes you a bad person. That message becomes a burden you have to carry for the rest of your life, and I thought that part of the movie was depicted well, if ham-handedly.

Have you checked out the coffee produced and sold by the EZLN? They got an online store and you can support schools in Chiapas.

You want to see range? Go check out Leigh Janiak's movie from before Fear Street. "Honeymoon" is chilling and dark and weird and a serious slow burning psychological horror featuring just 2 people and a cabin. Based on your opinions on everything I've seen you review on here I'm pretty sure you'd love it too.

it really like got me off guard when they just killed a kid like i really didn't expect them to just fucking slaughter a bunch of kids and
    ***SPOILERS 4 1666***
how it made us like nick and see him try and protect the kids only for u to find out in part 3 that he just fucking caused all their deaths (well not him but his family) like he could have easily told the kids to leave early or something and it makes his portrayal in this movie as a just a good ol guy who wants to help people so much more... macabre ?

Is it dorky to beg that you do an episode on "The Happiness of the Karakuris"? Audition is Miike's obv horror pick but knowing yr style I feel like you can give us a good rundown of the greatest stop motion yet seen in horror musicals.
