I really enjoyed that the overall theme of the trilogy was the way women (especially queer women) are scapegoated for things that go wrong, all so men could gain and keep their power.
Both Solomon and young!Nick are horrified when they first see the cost- all those butchered children. They even try and negate some of the damage they’ve done - Solomon by trying to stop accusations of witch craft and Nick by getting the campers out of the camp- but in the end, they shrug it off and only make it worse. They accept it because they want to keep their power. They’ll sacrifice anyone, from Sarah to Sam & Deena and including generations of a whole damn town to gain something.
And they’ll do it over and over. They will stand there, pick who it is they’ve decided should be painted as a monster, and go on about their day and reap the benefits over the bodies.
    They were really chilling villains.

I agree with you on this trilogy. I almost didn’t make it through 1994 when the story stalled out for a while. But I stuck it out and was won over by the end. 1978 was just a good old fashioned slasher. It was better than the first. Then 1666 blew me away! I went in to this series with low expectations and I wound up loving it more than I would’ve ever guessed.
Spookyastronauts was the first review of this series I watched and she was pretty much in line with this too, except she ranked them 1) 1666 2) 1994 & 3) 1978, which honestly surprised me she preferred 1994 to 1978, but if everyone like the same things the same way life would be terribly bland. If y’all haven’t seen her channel you should check it out. She has recommended so many films I have really enjoyed.

naming the bad guys goode was on the nose but so was naming the towns shadyside and sunnyvale lol
one thing that made me sad was the scene where deena as sarah tells solomon her crazy theory and he says he believes her, immediately before revealing that he was the bad guy. it felt like an allegory (metaphor maybe?) for believing women about sexual harrassment, so i was really excited when he validated her experience and seemed like he was going to support her. so then when he was a bad guy all along it made that scene feel less valuable.... curious what other people thought about it?

    • @tympestbooks1727
      @tympestbooks1727 3 роки тому +4

That scene felt like more of a call back (call forward?) to the scene in 1978 where Ziggy was begging Nick Goode to believe her about the curse being behind the attacks at Camp Nightwing, what with his knowing that it was because he was the one who had done the ritual and caused the killings to start. Like the scene was showing that the Goode family had been wicked from the very start, right down to being willing to betray those they "loved" in service to their own power and comforts.
I do see where your reading comes from though. Though in that context it could also be taken as a thing regarding how often companies with issues of sexual harassment have upper management that is totally aware of the problem but unwilling to actually do anything about it beyond paying lip service about believing their employees when they bring it up. The whole trilogy is built on people in power taking advantage of others to maintain their control, so I wouldn't be too surprised if there weren't a few layers of how that's done baked in.

I'm right there with you on the whole witch trials thing. The Crucible was pretty standard reading when I was in school but I feel too many people think witches were the scariest part of that tragedy. (Sort of similar to believing zombies are the scariest part instead of what is being said about society, except those aren't based on real events) Curious of your thoughts on ParaNorman as there's a number of similar elements and themes. I know it's a spooky movie for kids and not a proper horror film but considering Fear Street is an adaptation of YA books it's good to reconsider expectations

Right! That's what I was trying to tell you! It's not JUST this movie that switches the script. The script has been flipped. That we bought into the surface element should say something about how far we still need to go.

I’m no linguist or anything, but I feel like I’m the only one who was impressed by the accents. It’s what I imagine shifting accents in colonial America sounded like. Is it an English accent? Irish? Kinda recognizable American?

I don't usually get folded by a twist. I had an entire relationship based around going to see movies and having me guess the endings asap. Fun fact: I guessed the ending of the village within five minutes, but told my partner "I have an ending, but it's too stupid to be the ending" and then my shock grew...
So, IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when 1978 took me at least halfway through the slashing to realize, and 1666 honestly caught me. There were elements of 1994 where I was annoyed by what I thought were writing conveniences to further the plot without worrying about reality- namely how the sheriff treated the kids and the situation (you're not even gonna send a squad car to that hospital?!?), and those criticisms had to be swallowed by revelations in 1666. And I think the reason why I was so utterly bamboozled is because they did such a good job of making 1978s young sheriff so utterly sympathetic and heroic. Goode is a good guy... oof.
Anyway, I was really pleased with this trilogy as well. I have a special place in my heart for RL Stine that is neither Fear Street, nor Goosebumbs related. His book The Babysitter was the first of his I read in the summer before 6th grade, and during that summer I devoured books by him. Beach House was the first book I ever stayed up all night reading. I gorged on RL Stine, and was "over him" by the time school started, and felt very superior to all the "dumb kids" who started reading him MONTHS LATER, like he was new. It was my first taste of Histperdom. And it was a heady draft.
I also love that when I catch wheel of fortune, the letters given- rstlne always remind me of my boy.

I really enjoyed this movie series - and i agree, 1666 was hands-down the best of the bunch, and I loved the level of internal consistency with the mythos, and the "twist" that the "witch" was really a victim. I think there's a lot of meta that you could get into with this series that underlines the villany of oppression of minorities/the poor by the the wealthy/powerful and anticapitalism themes in these movies if you decided to do a video about it perhaps on your other channel

I’m not even a huge horror fan or anything, I really do just like to listen to you talk sometimes, although this trilogy isn’t bad but anyway the point is that I totally 100% had that Have A Day poster on my wall for YEARS. I think horror movies work so much better in pre-modern setting without phones, internet, etc. Otherwise it's basically Supernatural, where by the end half the time, someone litterally saves the day by googling it or calling someone, or we are magically in a ghost dimension just to nerf their smart phones. This is also why people hated the ending of The Village,

I watched all of these movies in a night and I gotta say I was AMAZED by how well they built up the conclusion and how much of a punch it packed! I enjoyed the first movie, it reminded me a lot of Scream and other horror comedies, but it had more of an edge than something like Happy Death Day, the second one really got me with the C. Berman Twist and the layers it added into the lore and the story, but the third one just blew me away.
On rewatch you appreciate the first two more imo for all the little hints they drop. I love these movies so much, they're probably my favorite horror ANYTHING that I've seen in ages.

I was also a pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed these movies. The first one was a little hard to get into but I’m glad I stuck with it. I was a big fan of Fear Street books as a preteen, particularly the Saga series which has an origin story similar to the movies. I actually like the origin story the movies came up with more than the books, especially since it feels more culturally relevant. Glad you enjoyed Fear Street too.

I will say that the second film does benefit from watching the third right on its heels. I've been looking forward to your thoughts on the final entry and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Credit to the writers and actors because I did not see that flip from straight forward trope to final reveal coming until well into the backstory climax.

2 things I woulda liked to see.
    1) the cop guy shoulda been immortal making his crimes seem more worth it.
    2) the kids shoulda been arrested at the end, something I figured would happen when all the magic stuff magically disintegrates leaving kids with dead cops and no reasonable explanation as to why. Hell the girls even leave bloody footprints in the guy's house!!
