I was so lucky to see this show live in the late 90s. It was the best ever night out I had ever had and still remains so. Talented actors who were also very accomplished musicians. A fab experience.
I had the pleasure of seeing Angus (Gus) McGregor play Buddy at the Strand Theatre in London on two occasions. The first time, I was mesmerized by how he nailed the role. His voice, the little idiosyncrasies, the way he carried himself and of course his ability to play the guitar made him THE actor for that role. At the end of the play, Gus walked out on the stage and briefly talked about the impact of Buddy Holly's music and thanked everyone for coming. Then the band came back and did an encore that was unforgettable.
Gus McGregor nails the role of Buddy Holly. And even with all the artistic license they took, Gary Busey's performance in the movie was great, too, imo. Buddy's talent & influence on other musicians was enormous, particularly in light of how young he died. Buddy Holly raves on. . . and lives on.
Hi. I see it was a long time ago, so if you’re reading this, thanks so much for putting up all the videos you did. I’ve always known who Buddy Holly was, but was never a Buddy Fan ( I was born almost 45 years after he was ) until I watched this certain entire Musical/ Movie here on you tube. I think the guy playing Buddy Holly in this is absolutely amazing. But I never realized how amazing the real Buddy Holly was until recently. How tragic what happened to the 3 of them . RIP. B. H … J.P.R…and R.V…. and THANK YOU for sharing your amazing talent !!
Habe das Musical 5 Mal in London gesehen. Einfach super die Musik ,und das Publikum ging voll mit. Was hätte dieser Mann noch alles veröffentlicht, ein Talent . Danke Buddy Holly.
I went to London to this show it was so fantastic. Went 3 times to the show, the first time I saw the show. When they announced about that Buddy had death, in the audience there was lots of crying. In the other shows it was speeded it up at this point , so it did’t happen. Great show.
The performer that portrays Buddy Holley does such a beautiful job just as good as Gary busey and Buddy Holley himself Buddy Holley would be so proud of him and Gary I could swear Everytime I see these two gentlemen play Buddy I just see Buddy , I don't know this gentleman's name but I would love to meet him someday, I use to live in Lubbock Texas and buddy Holley is my all-time favorite Rock an roller If I could go back in time and meet one person it would be Buddy Holley
Absolute classic songs little lived on irrespective of these early departure plane crash movie stars the rule stars in heaven in our hearts . I totally agree Everytime I see him I see so much Buddy Holley himself in him Buddy Holley is my all-time favorite Rock an roller I don't know this performers name but Buddy Holley would be so proud of him
And not only that. It takes you back to the final Buddy Holly concert. Buddy would have wished his audience goodnight on February 2nd and his fans would have cheered and screamed at him. Not knowing he'd be dead in the next 24 hours. Quite moving
I remember when I bought this whole show on vhs and I had thought that it was a waste of money cause the way it was made but then this guy kept on singing and now I think he's the greatest tribute artist of all time for Buddy. I now have it on dvd and share it with this generation of kids and they lap it up and scream the songs out.
This young man does a great portrayal of Buddy. Even though the story is dramatized for effect, I feel like I've enjoyed my rock & roll hero, alive, happy, bursting with life. There will never be another Buddy Holly, but this is close, really close.
Naw man. Buddy would have went up there with a big ol Texas grin and tell you this out of Lubbock Texas hang on and watch the changes. Next would be musical bliss, no showing off. Just good ol Charles Hardin Holley aka Buddy. RIP to the music. His Rave on is not that great tho js. 28 yr guitar player fixing to shred faces off with my solos. GOD bless and save music.
I think this guy playing Buddy did an amazing job. And poor Richie Valens, they made the La Bamba movie and pretty much based it all on Richie’s drunk abusive jealous brother . 😐. Oh and the Mother always screaming at him. I wasn’t impressed with that movie at all.
While I have mixed feelings about "tributes" like this, I think the important message here is that Holly's music is still relevant nearly 60 years after his death. One can only speculate what he would have accomplished if he hadn't died so young.
On "The Day the Music Died" on VHF, Waylon Jennings felt Buddy would have been a successful record producer and The Big Bopper would have owned a few radio stations.
I think rock & roll would me very different today had that flight never let the ground. Buddy Holly's influence will be eternal, as long as American music is listened to.
thank you chris for all your insight on Buddy's song list that night at the surf ballroom it definitely helps me with my research of what happened in Buddy's last night of rock n roll stardom
In y opinion, the greatest rock and roll icon in all history. Elvis had the looks and sultry voice, but Buddy had style and energy. I often wish we could retrieve him, JP, and Ritchie. Truly a tragedy worth grieving eternally.
john coates Elvis was so freaking boring!! He didn’t even write his own music. Buddy was the only one who wrote, sang and produced his own music. Now that’s talent!! Elvis had the looks and had the women creaming over him lol
In fact, Buddy recorded this song two months prior to his death. He never performed it at the Winter Dance party, but for this play, it does round out his enthusiasm for what he was bringing to the stage. History tells us he was so very proud of this song, too. So many people say, if they could go back in time they'd stop the "Titanic" or strangle Lee Harvey Oswald. For me, I'd stop that plane departure on February 3rd, 1959. We will never know what music has lost because four young men boarded that Beechcraft Bonanza in a winter storm.
As a kid in the Fifties I bought "Peggy Sue" 45rpm on Coral records and wore it out. Later I learned guitar and at age 75 still play and sing Buddy's songs. Rave on Buddy, play that Strat.
I grew up with Buddy’s music. Gus is not exactly like Buddy but this rocking is superior. The story is still a wonderful tribute to the guy we listened to at the malt shop.
The performer is a Scot, Angus MacGregor who goes by Gus MacGregor. I love his performance, actually more than I do that of Gary Busey. "It doesn't matter anymore" is my favorite Buddy Holly song followed by "Rave On" so I'm tickled pink at his performance. They play "It doesn't matter anymore" a little uptempo for me but at least I get to hear the music, and I never got to go to one of his live performances. I've seen this show in theater in Tulsa but it's played in our area only one time so I get to revisit it here often and for that I am grateful. I am 73 and I was 14 the day he was killed. This was our music.
Thanks Stephen. You're absolutely correct and I had the pleasure of seeing Angus perform "Buddy"at the Strand Theatre in London on two different occasions. He was incredible and as someone who grew up in Texas during the Buddy Holly era, he had the role nailed down. Great guitar player in addition to doing a superb job of portraying Buddy. The actor who played the Big Bopper was equally as good. That was years ago and I still get goose bumps thinking about those performances.
To the people who think this guy isn't good, yeah Buddy wasn't like this. Also Ritchie Valens did not look like Liberachi as he did in this video, its called a tribute for a reason y'all.
Gus MacGregor is great in the role. Nobody can look and sound like Buddy Holly only Buddy could do that. I’ve been a fan since I could play records - Dec 1960. I may not have seen Holly live or this 30 year old performance but I wish I had. He gives a pretty good effort and I like to watch him.
A couple of points: This is a really fun, great play about Buddy Holly. The actor in the lead role is fantastic. Buddy did look like this and had all this energy. He loved performance. Buddy never sang this song in public performance. It was recorded the previsous November, and he was very pumped about the release. Sadly, he was killed a few weeks prior to the release. The song was written by Paul Anka for Buddy, as a gift after Anka screwed up one of Holly's performances by pulling a plug as a joke. Buddy's last concert did feature Dion and the Belmonts, but not this whole staged line-up of performers. The Big Bopper was a genial giant of a man, but had a wicked cold on this evening, which is why he opted for the plane ride, rather than sitting on a bus. Ritchie Valens was 17 and not a greasy lover of women. He was a decent, clean-cut kid who was looking forward to a real plane ride. He wasn't terrified of airplanes. The reason for this musical play is to get the music out and the feel of 1959. It so very well. If you want to know more about Buddy and his music and last tour, check out the Paul McCartney's excellent multi-part film, also on UA-cam. There are several great books as well. God rest you all, Buddy, Ritchie, J.P., and Peter (pilot of the plane). You left and empty place in our hearts.
Frankly, this guy looks more like Busey than Holly... want to see the BEST Holly? Try Jordan Spencer looks and sounds JUST like Buddy ua-cam.com/video/4quvCgiuBxs/v-deo.html

Even after all these years, Buddy's music lives on. RIP Buddy, Big Bopper and Richie
In my opinion Buddy is one of the Best songwriters & Performers of Rock & Roll!!!! Just listen to that Voice!!!!
I hope you know that’s not Buddy
Now I know why my mom smiles and starts dancing when she plays her Buddy records. She's 82!♥️
