  • At 91, Buddy Holly’s Wife Confesses The REAL REASON She Didn’t Go To The Funeral
Buddy Holly introduced Rock and Roll to many during his prolific yet tragically short-lived career. Combining elements of rhythm and blues, rockabilly, and country music, the teen idol of the 50s would cement himself as a founding member of the rock and roll genre before his tragic death in 1959. However, even more bespectacled than his career is the tale of his elusive and enigmatic widow, Maria Elena Santiago, who was famously absent from the singer’s funeral. Today, we’ll explore the history of Buddy and Maria Elena’s relationship and the devastating reason she did not attend the ceremony.

In 1969 I was 15 years-old. My girlfriend found a 45 of "Peggy Sue" at the town dump. We played it, and though we'd never heard of Buddy Holly, we LOVED his song. Months later, I learned he'd died in a plane crash ten years earlier. Somehow, his tragic death really touched my heart. I became a lifelong fan. Buddy deserves all the praise he's been given by other rock 'n' roll fans who've discovered him long after February 3, 1959. Buddy was a Music Powerhouse - and a Texas Gentleman.

I feel bad for Maria Elena Santiago. She was going through absolute torture, not feeling well (probably due to being pregnant), and then the *_way_* she found out, on top of being so stressed at his death that she lost his baby... As usual, people would rather be busy judging her and being monsters to her, and kill her spirit instead of trying compassion and understanding. People are so cruel to each other.

What a shame. I was crushed when it happened. Filled with disbelief. They were all so young. Richie was 17! They were all part of a great generation like Buddy Knox, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran Chuck Berry Fats Domino.. All carving out a new sound mixing rockabilly & R & B and Latin. They faced a lot of obstacles like prejudices. Elvis was banned from performing in several cities like Seattle in 56. So I got to see him in 57 when I was 10. Jimi Hendrix saw him then too! I love em all.❤❤❤❤❤

I was born in 1950 in a small town close to Lubbock. Lubbock was the “big city” in the area. During that time that area was very, very conservative and not very accepting of racial differences. And it is still that way to some extent. Back then rock and roll was the devils music. Lubbock and the entire area did not like rockers and would do nothing to bring attention to the area concerning rock and roll. When I was growing up there nobody mentioned Buddy Holly. For many years after Holly’s death Lubbock would not do anything to acknowledge that he was a product of Lubbock. It has only been in the last few years that Lubbock has embraced one of their most famous sons. I owned a small business in Lubbock for 10 years. Even today the community is very non accessible. I suspect that the “good ole boys” that run the city finally realized that there was money to be made from the Holly legacy. I doubt it is because there was a change of heart.
My older brother was a “greaser”. I still have and listen to his collection of old 45rpm records. Some of which are Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

I went to Lubbock in 1957 to attend Texas Tech. To me Buddy Holly was a local boy, who was just one of those pale imitators of the real Black rockers that I loved. A year or so later, Chuck Berry put on a concert in a Lubbock honky-tonk. My buddy and I got his autograph in ballpoint on our hands.

I agree 100% about her wanting to remember him as she knew him alive as opposed to her last impression of him upon her mind being his body laying in his casket. I don't do high school class reunions because I want to remember my classmates as I knew them as a classmate. Of course, there are a few that I do see because of proximity but most of them I still remember as 17 and 18 year olds and my college friends as 21 and 22 year olds...which is fine with me.

Norman Petty robbed him blind. Stole his songwriting credits, signed him to horrible contracts, and basically stole every dollar Petty made and kept it for himself. The only reason Holly was on the plane that day was because the only way he could make ANY money to provide for his family was on these horrible barnstorming tours. And Petty didn't stop with Buddy Holly - he did the same thing to the String-A-Longs.

Peggy Sue said the reason she was not at his grave site burial was as follows. She showed up at Buddies mother’s house while everyone was gone to his burial. She came there to unload personal items from his boyhood bedroom located inside his mothers home. She cleaned out the bedroom before his family came back home from the funeral . By the time his family returned home she and the contents were long gone.

I was with my dad, a broadcaster, at a BBC engineers house when I was a small boy. My dad was into classical music, so the engineer waited till he was in another room, then played me Peggy Sue, quite loud through a decent hifi. It completely blew my mind. The 1st LP I owned was Buddy's Greatest Hits.
He was a great songwriter and singer, he really felt it and his versions of Bo Diddley and Brown Eyed Handsome Man at least match the originals in my opinion. I was listening to him 2 days ago, talent of his calibre lives on for sure.

I grew up in the 50s. They were probably the most stable, innocent, undemanding period in the twentieth century. The sixties, on the other hand, fit your description. The Vietnam war, feminism, anti-police rhetoric, and other anti-social viewpoints came forward. Gone were the cleancut teens of the fifties. I look at all the dysfunctional aspects of today's world, and l see roots that were planted in the1960's.
