"kinda like watering the yard"
taken straight from the manual
Ian the calmest man ever to shoot a fully automatic sub-machine gun
whh2000 well it is like watering the yard :D
The diametrical opposite of Larry Vickers! (I like watching both, by the way)
he was al capone in his past life
when he mentions it being controllable and few other smgs coming close, the image of Hickok45 doing a drive-by with a bicycle and an Uzi just sprung to my mind.
Hate the fact we turned 13 000 of these into scrap in 2002-2005 in norway..
My dad carried one (Lt in heimevernet at the time)was a fantastic firearm to shoot, even as a kid it was very pleasant. Got MP5 afterwards, they did like that eventually... Well after they got done grumbling about "all the plastic" :-)
Not only is that a waste of history, it's a waste of money. Norwegian government entities could have sold them off as parts kits, sold them to museums or sold them to armorers that supply firearms to use in films and whatnot.
Usable parts and guns are worth more money than scrapped steel. Let alone pieces of historical firearm history that can still be used.
They should honestly have been donated to museums. Museums generally struggle with money and unless they are owned by a fund with a lot of investments, they really don't have the resources to make purchases like that. Most museums also already have more material than they can display at once, so the stuff is likely to just stay in some storage. Conclusion: museums aren't very likely to pay for material like that, especially seeing as each museum would probably only be interested in one or two of the finest examples.
Source: worked for years in a museum in Finland.
I also would not have been opposed to see them sell the parts, or even sell the guns whole after having rekt them, but I guess that's against government policy...
They did the same to Lugers that many officers carried as sidearms... Our govt. has their own approach to how they do things, no matter what people feel about it..
really? What a travesty!!!!
Fired an MP40 back in the 80's ( belonged to my Regiments Museum at the time) The Sterling was still the issue SMG in The British Army at the time and we all were impressed at how much better the MP40 seemed to be than The Sterling to fire and for accuracy. The 'pros' the Sterling had was compact size and ease to carry.
I remember reading an account of a German unit pinned down by a Soviet sniper up in a church steeple so their officer called for a German sniper to counter him. A German non-commissioned officer said "who needs a sniper?" and proceeded to shoot the sniper out of the steeple with his MP-40.
"kind of like watering the yard."
What a good way to describe it.
The rate of fire is much faster than I thought! Playing games like Red Orchestra, the rate of fire seems to be much less...
sickre and they put it on the PPSh.
because thats how the real PPSh and MP40 fired, same as in the game
For those of you other people wondering the purpose of the structure on the bottom of the barrel at the end, the MP40 was orginally designed for tankers, hence the downward magazine (much easier to reload in a tank). The structure was intended to hook into firing ports.
MP40's the only SMG you'll ever need.
AMEN TO THAT!
That low-recoil is pretty crazy. Whenever I watched old war movies, I thought there was no recoil because they were using blanks. I stand corrected :)
German Engineering At Its Best
Omg that sounds good
"and let it rip....it's kinda like watering the yard..."
Classic...
after shooting an mp40 i can conclude that there is more recoil when shooting a gas blow back airsoft gun.
the germans had the underfolder stock first, the russians copied it on there pps-43 and later on their aks series
Yeah key word is "later"...but if you need a light weight, compact stock in WW2, you don't have too many other options.
These are great videos. I'm not even a 'gun nut', but I love the engineering that goes into designing guns and how their design features translate to performance/reliability in the field. I think you capture the little details really well and in a way that's accessible to a wider audience. Keep doing what you're doing!
Must be something from the archives. Karl hasn't had that much beard in months.
Grizz Axxemann I'd guess about the same time they shot the G3 I think; Ian had the bum shoulder then.
There hasn't been that much Karl for a long time either. Shows the efficacy of his work out regime (and is a big vindication of his commitment)
Before you got into how controllable it was, that was precisely what i was thinking. It almost looked fake, there was so little muzzle rise.
RIP headphone users... :D
Such a beautifully designed gun, I really want to get my hands on one.
You look so relaxed shooting that. The recoil must be quite agreeable
That slowmo shot was brilliant. The lack of recoil really showed.
Seeing the controllability during full auto fire, I am now starting to doubt about the impossibility of Clint Eastwood dual wielding MP 40s in "Where Eagles Dare".
It would be cool for you guys to try it, but it would go against your safety standards :]
I got to shot one of these and I have to say, it is kind of awesome. It feels like the bolt moving forward and the recoil combined with the fire-rate just about cancel each other out. It just does not really move around. I guess that is what you get with the telescoping recoil system, well balanced bolt, and well balanced fire-rate.
"I have fired a number of MP-40's"
I honestly never thought I would hear that
Shooting from the hip is de rigueur for the MP40 (at least in the movies ;-)
Ant T with that amount of control hip firing doesn't seem to be a disadvantage lol
Never new the thing worked so solid. Especcially considering what it would've been factory new around 1942
Jeez, I always though the MP40 had a slow fire rate. I'd hate to be taking fire from that as an Allied Force
I love mp40s :)
all those days in DoD.
It's so satisfying how the mag slides in
Its amazing how smooth it fires. Very controllable.
I honestly have no need for a submachine gun, but if I was able to afford the cost, maintenance, etc for one, it would be the MP-40. Thanks for always uploading great videos.
I had the opportunity to hold one of these at the Illinois State Military Museum. Unfortunately not fired, but really awesome to hold. Very comfortable in the hands.
Carl is really chill. Would love to see more of him with Ian.
Matheus Phelps look up InRangeTV
One of the best SMGs in the world
If not the best.
MP-40s have been discovered to be in service in the Syrian Civil War, SYRIA, of all places! 0-0
the slow rate of fire and the flat shooting is amazing.
The echo at the end of a burst of fire is kind of epic in and of itself.
awesome weapon. glad people still have them working
Thank's for making my work night not so boring.
Ian I am sorry to hear about your shoulder and I hope it heals soon. I have encountered situations like that and they suck quite a bit. Not being able to use all of your body is a really hard thing to put up with.
What a beast! Gotta rate that hip fire
Speaking of submachine guns, I'm looking forward to the day you get your hands on a Swedish K (m/45) or the Smith & Wesson copy the M76.
The MP-40 is such genius engineering. I will never get over that fact
Very flat shooting. Thanks for sharing.
Such a iconic sound. I could tell the gun type by the noise alone.
Damn that looks smooth shooting.
Since you mentioned it, I'll expand on it.
From what I've read and understand, the folding stock mechanism for the AKS and AKMS were largely taken straight from the MP38/40.
The system itself wasn't really beefy enough to handle the increase in recoil and results in the retaining nut loosening over time. Ultimately, this is partly why the Soviets abandoned it for other folding mechanisms later on.
That being said, I love it and own a Yugoslavian M70AB2. Every year or so (depending on usage), I have to tighten that nut or else the stock wobbles up and down too much. It can be, of course, over-tightened and cause it to be difficult to operate, so finding the sweet spot and keeping it there takes some fiddling. Not difficult at all, takes maybe 10 minutes and only really requires a punch.
That being said, the stock will still wobble side to side and there's little you can do about that apart from shimming it or something (mine doesn't bother me). Adjusting the nut only largely affects up and down travel, though some side-to-side wobble can be eliminated if it's really loose.
Very nice Ian the MP40 submachine gun ✌👌👍😊
Thanks for making this available in germany! I always enjoy your videos, keep it up.
I had the opportunity to try out a full auto MP40, MP5, Thompson Sub (WW2 vintage) and AK47. The MP5 was enjoyable but took some getting used to and the Thompson stock weighed too much, but at least that made the recoil easy. The AK was difficult to keep on paper after the 3rd shot. You'd need to train on full auto to make it useful past 50 feet.
Of the four, I loved that MP40 most. Super easy. Like some people have described it, it's like a pussycat purring while it throws lead.
Best trousers out there Ian
Just absolutely cool gun.
I've never had the opportunity to shoot one, but they look fantastically controllable.
over 70 years on and that thing is still firing xD
First time I see this thing full auto. Good job. I wish you could do a video too for the PPSh-41.
***** Thanks, I'll check it out.
How would you compare this to the ZK 383? I remember you commenting on how smooth that gun felt as well.
Will you all be doing a review/comparison of the new GSG 9mm MP40 with an original?
My god that gun looks smooth to shoot. I bet it's competitive to any sub machine gun today.
I love the video guys keep up the good work
is there any chamc you can find and show us an isaeli GAL rifle?
the prototype that was sepose to repalce the uzi but they choose the GALIL insted
That looks stupidly fun.
Jesus, I'm a complete novice shooter and that recoil looked like something I could manage without issue.
If a stock machine gun could have a negative amount of recoil, it would be this one.
at what cyclic rate does suppressive fire begin and when dose it become wasting amo?
Hi!!! I have a question about the barrel of the mp40, can any one tell me why the front of the barrel have a type of hook on the bottom of the front sight please???
I sometimes read that the magazin was not loaded to the full capacity to prevent jamming due to the extra friction of the single feed lips. Can someone explain this? It seems to me that fully loaded the spring is on maximum tension and works best, whereas if problems with the feed lips would occur it would be during the last rounds were tension is the weakest.
absolutely love the mp40.. shoots great..
literally yesterday i was thinking, you know i havent seen anything on the mp40 on forgotten weapons.
You should do a video with the Winchester model 1907.
I always wondered. How hard is to load the magazine itself?
Awsome video. I'd love to get the chance to shoot an MP-40. That would be a dream come tru...
Its got a good ratio of functionality/cuteness.
I haven't fired the MP40, but it sounds like the Sten (which I have fired) in terms of control/recoil. It had almost no recoil, it just vibrated slightly. By far the Sten is the most enjoyable subgun I have ever fired.
If you could find one, could you do a video on Fontbernat m1938 SMG? They are interesting historically, and are definitely a
Forgotten Weapon.
Ever since I was a teenager I wondered how the weapon compared to 9mm SMGs with longer barrels. Because the magazine is so far forward, the gasses don't seem to have so much room to expand that they cause a lot of kick, making it comfortable to shoot - however, I wonder how it preforms in ballistics - does it have lower velocity in comparison to other, even more modern 9mm SMGs?
If you just brought that magazine and action back an inch or so, would it make a more ballistically competitive MP40 variant at the cost of more kick?
Might be worth it to have the recoil spring given a new heat treatment. If it needs reshaping; anneal it, get it back to its proper shape, and then have it tempered again to reset its springiness. Or could try broiling it in the oven at 500 degrees F for about an hour, then have it slowly cool in the oven overnight (basically after an hour just turn the oven off).
Ian if you liked to shoot MP-40, you should really test Suomi KP/-31. Its great submachine gun. I "had" to destroy old ammunition by shooting while I was in Finnish army, every lad had one full green wooden box full of tracer ammunition what we had to get rid of. Most enjoyable shooting experience I have ever had.
On the subject of controllable 9mm submachine guns
I would love it if you guys could get your hands on a Carl Gustav m/45 (Swedish-K)
for a video since i would love to see a video about it and its also a very interesting weapon
that is similar to the MP 40 in some ways (Same 9mm round Similar Rate of fire and also being a Open bolt design).
Awesome.. my favourite weapon👍
what is the rpm with the MP-40 ?
Crazily stable!!!
Always wanted to shoot an MP 40... that and a PPSh-41. The stuff of dreams lol.
My favourite smg other then the ppsh 41 and mp18
One day I hope you can get ur hands on a Danuvia smg!
man that was a cool reverb sound
Can you slap the charging handle down out of the safety notch like you can an MP5?
That is fucking BEAUTIFUL
"Its kinda like watering the yard."
Is this from when you shot the FAL and G3 full auto?
Yes, the same trip.
That room sounds like the spring tank on my Fender Twin...
"It's like watering the yard"
If you water the yard with acid yes
How can you not love that.
Hope you're able to get your shoulder fixed up, Ian!
Which one is flatter, MP5 or MP-40?
Hi Ian, I heard that on one of the auctions in USA there is an original Polish wz.38M rifle to buy, I think it's a very nice rifle to make a video about. Problem is I don't remember on which auction it is, only thing I remember is that you already made some videos on guns from it. Maybe it was RIA?
Found it, it's on James D.Julia :)
Damn, the recoil really is minimal! Even has an older, worn out recoil spring right? Impressive, can barely see the muzzle move at all.
Please do a review of the recent ATI Mp40 in 9mm replica.
I got to shoot a full auto MP40 about five months that back. now, it could of just been the one I shot, but I noticed it pulled to the left. easy to control but still noticable. otherwise, super nice weapon.
