      @@WyndStryke You are right that they are all fallen. I think the difference between Crowley and other fallen angels has to do with life experience/personality more than anything. Crowley has spent most of his time since the creation of humans on earth among the humans and spent little time in hell. other demons mostly only see the worst of humanity, either by tempting the weak minded or by torturing the souls that end up on their side. Crowley is basically the only demon who has seen the best of it as well.

    "I don't like real life relationships. I like fictional relationships." I feel SEEN.
    Also, it's okay to get emotional! This show really IS emotional. The big thing to remember with Terry Pratchett (one of the original creators) is that he was a deeply, profoundly humanist thinker. He was very focused on calling out the worst behaviour in people while still believing in their better angels (heh). Neil Gaiman, the other creator, is also deepy humanist and together they wrote a story that was...fundamentally...about a deep love for PEOPLE. The story makes fun of religion, religious horror (The Omen mainly), and politics, but the overarching theme at the story's warm core is Compassion.
    Fun note! The scene with Shakespeare was filmed at the actual existing Globe Theatre in London. It's a gorgeous space.
    Extra note I love: Neil Gaiman has gone on record confirming that Angels and Demons don't have 'sexes' and choose how they want to present, which is why you'll occasionally see Crowley in women's clothes. Crowley is predominantly genderfluid and I just think that's neat as an old fan of the book.

    Crowley doesn't do much on earth. He just reports the evil humans do on their own as his doing. He only does a few things that cause minor evils across a wide area. Like the phone network, he knows it will have thousands of people frustrated and annoyed, which will turn them a little more evil.
    One of the best lines imo is that Crowley didn't fall like the other angels. He sauntered vaguely downwards

    • @mayaenglish5424
      @mayaenglish5424 9 місяців тому +4

      And importantly, it's still ultimately their decision to be Good or Evil after Crowley's done with people, there is perhaps less free will involved with other supernatural meddling. Or if there is still a choice involved with the other occult/ethereal being's meddling, I feel they are rather more likely to attempt to fix the books. Whereas Crowley just vaguely annoys and inconveniences people, which, yes, causes negative emotions, but they are still your emotions to do with what you will and if you choose to take your anger and frustration out on other people that's your choice regardless of whether the initial irritant is Man-Made or demonic.

    • @Lightice1

      Crowley does plenty, actually, and never takes credit for humans' actions, though sometimes Hell just assumes that something particular heinous has to be his doing, like the Spanish Inquisition. Some of the world's worst civic infrastructures, traffic and communication systems are his personal doing. Unlike the other demons, he works on a mass scale, seeking to corrupt huge numbers of people ever so slightly, and then letting their human nature to do the rest. Although he doesn't get much appreciation for it, Crowley has likely had hand with more souls going to Hell than any other individual demon out there.

    So, Heaven is very cult-y, but in the last episode, Crowley was actually calling himself and Aziraphale "occult" beings, which is why Aziraphale gets offended and says "angels aren't occult, we're ethereal" bc of the negative connotations lmao
    Also, all of the demons are fallen angels. That's what demons are, where they came from. There was a big rebellion/war led by Lucifer the angel, and he and the others were all cast down to Hell. In the last episode, Hastur says to Crowley over the TV "we are the fallen, never forget that", that's what he means.

    Fun fact about the Ancient Rome bit. Crowley is rather despondent at the start of the scene, and before Aziraphale cheered him up, he was definitely going to drink himself into oblivion. Crowley says that he just "nipped in for a quick temptation". 41 AD/CE was the year of Caligula's assassination. Crowley was given instructions to tempt the Praetorian tribunes to stage a coup against the Emperor; they killed him, and also murdered his wife, their little daughter Julia and a bunch of innocent bystanders. No wonder Crowley went to a tavern to drink it all away.
    The best bit is, Crowley's costume in the scene supports the "quick job" part of the story. He's usually dressed on the cutting edge of current fashion (while Aziraphale, ever the conservative, is lagging several decades behind). The costume department is very scrupulous about that, in every historical setting they show. However, in the Rome bit Crowley's attire is all over the place, just barely passing. Shows that he was new in town, wasn't planning on staying long and probably didn't want to be there in the first place.

      In the book Crowley mentions that most demons aren't especially evil at heart, they're just doing a dirty, unpleasant but essential job in their corner of the Creation. And that there are some angels that are quite nasty pieces of work, in turn. The main difference between Crowley and other demons is that he's got imagination and creativity thanks to spending so much time with humans.

    So all the demons are fallen, not just Crowley. They all also have animal motifs and a part of their demoness they can't hide when trying to blend in on Earth. For Crowley it's his snake tattoo and his eyes. There is a theory that he could've been an archangel, specifically Raphael, but that's just a theory. Due to the recent season, the fandom has suggested other angels he could've been, but the Raphael theory is probably the oldest and most popular one for who he used to be. There's even a tag for it on AO3.

      Baraquiel is another I've seen used a lot. Raphael would fit more with Aziraphale as it's partially in his name, so it would be odd for he and Crowley to have such similar names (although I could see arguments for it -- Angel and Spike were Liam and William, after all, and when Gaiman started writing the story, he only had one character and later split it into two). I don't think we'll ever be told who Crowley was, though, and I kind of like it better that way. It's fun in fanfic, though.

So it works on two levels thematically with Crowley being a snake and his love and protection of Earth and humanity. I also don't think we'll ever know, but it would be fun to explore in universe how two archangels fell and then what happened in season 2.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 9 місяців тому +4

      @@amandajohnson3531 I don't know. It was Aziraphale, not Crowley, who healed Anathema (although I'm sure Crowley could have), so I don't think healing applies particularly more to Crowley or that love of the Earth and humanity is only Crowley. They both have done healing and temptations. Aziraphale is in proximity to snakes just by being involved with Crowley.
      I really like best the idea that Crowley was that engineer who always helps with everything. He worked on the nebula but he's the one who goes to activate it because nobody else wanted to and he was excited to. The idea that he and Aziraphale were more or less nobody special as far as Heaven corporate was concerned who, millennia later, become the most important monkey wrench in Heaven's plan, is more appealing to me than one of them having been a big deal archangel back in the day. In the original book angels and demons look more or less identical to all but the most adept observer, but the show had to make a visual distinction to suit the aesthetic they were going for. Hell is dirty and grimy, so the demons have to be, as well. But Crowley, spending as little time down there as possible, hasn't caught much of that grime on him.

The show probably portrays the demons as gross-looking since it's putting a big emphasis on Hell and Heaven being two sides of the same coin, the fancy CEOs in their penthouses and the grimy maintenance workers in the sub-basements.
    Crowley is securing souls for Hell, too, it's his job and he'd get in trouble if he didn't, but he lets humans do all the dirty work for him. By breaking the cellphone network he makes millions of people angry at the same time, and the all go and turn their ire on each other, and as consequences pile up over time, it can mean thousands of souls for Hell while Crowley just has to sit and watch. I swear every single person who’s watched this episode had the same reaction to the intro starting after 28 minutes! It makes me laugh every time I watch other people’s reactions

    hey Morgan, as a fellow HH and Good Omens fan, I found a fanart/meme I thought you might enjoy. It features Lucifer as Aziraphael, and Alastor as Crowley. I just thought it was an awesome fanart and thought I'd raise awareness of it.

    Hastur and Ligur’s one-off temptations gained 2 souls for Satan. Crowley’s stunt with the phone network potentially gained 100s or 1000s of souls for Satan.

    I first read the book this is based on nearly 30 years ago. It has been my favorite ever since. I love this adaptation and your reaction is amazing. I loved watching your initial confusion transform into enthusiasm. Watching you experience this for the first time has been a gift.

    6:38 just thought it was fun to mention, Crowley is female presenting in this flashback just like she was as the nanny! Angels and Demons in this universe are genderless and can present themselves however they like! c: 🩷

    31:27 a bright yellow aura is often an indication of happiness, confidence, and an overall pleasant and social nature. In some cases, if the yellow is tinted slightly neon, this can mean an imbalance or blockage in the solar plexus chakra
