This was a lot of fun to do! I am always looking for suggestions! Like I will probably do Scofield on a rhythm changes or Metheny on a Blues 🙂 Let me hear your ideas!
I love the head nod to the "accidentals" in the high speed descending arpeggios. Our desire to have everything just so with a reason for all of it is not always the way things work... 😎. Thank You!
Yeah I am pretty sure that those are just mistakes, but they are hard to hear and I really don't think they make the solo any less brilliant! Nobody should care about a wrong note here and there :)
Hello Jens, been watching your stuff for a while, really learned a lot from your stuff as a jazz guitar student! After making some youtube videos my respect for youtubers like you has increased so much, because its not as easy as it looks! You inspire many people to keep practicing to make beautiful music, keep doing what you're doing man!
This is one of my favorite of Stern's solo albums. His playing on "we want miles" is just blazing. Would love to see you analyze something from that masterpiece.
I've always digged Mike Stern, but have been delving into his style lately upon hearing him with his power trio in '96. I first saw him with Miles Davis in '81. Lately with Frank Vignola.
@@JensLarsen To be honest, some more Mike Stern! I have a goal to get a better understanding of how Mike Stern implies so much movement over a static harmony. I lot of his pieces stay on a particular chord for quite a long time yet his solos make it sound like a lot of harmonic movement is going on. I don't think he's just superimposing a V7 chord arpeggio and moving between that and the I chord. Once I've cracked that code (understanding it at least) I would be interested in some of Pat Metheny's intervallic ideas, such as on "Have You Heard".
I did make two videos on Pat's playing: ua-cam.com/video/pbr3WwE767I/v-deo.html I don't have the impression that Mike is implying other chords on one chord, I think the ideas are quite different from that when it comes to his playing over a single chord.
Thank you very much! I am glad you found it useful! If you have any suggestions for topics or things you are looking for the feel free to let me know 👍
Thanks for asking. For guitar, Johnny Smith, I just got hip to him because of Mary Halvorson's album with Bill Frisell, The Maid With The Flaxen Hair - A Tribute To Johnny Smith. Any analysis on Mike Stern's work on We Want Miles would be welcome (the solos on Jean Pierre and My Man's Gone Now are standouts for me, I need to spend some more quality time listening to those again). For a general non guitar player analysis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell or Mal Waldron, I dug the Herbie Hancock related videos you did and I love anything that deals with the similarities and differences between guitar and piano in jazz music. Thank's again you for all of your work.
Thanks Paul! Food for thought I need to check out Miles in that period. The only one I have heard is You're under arrest :) I will look at ways to make something with piano players, I think Bill Evans is at the top of the list, but hopefully I can find a way to do others as well.
Thanks for replying Jens. I love You're Under Arrest. This may be apocryphal, but I seem to remember Mr. Davis replying to critics that took him to task for playing pop tunes that On Green Dolphin Street was a pop tune when he played it. I put a link to one of the tunes I mentioned from We Want Miles. The guitar is pretty rock oriented but I think that was Miles Davis' preference during that period. ua-cam.com/video/4a1_6u6QaKc/v-deo.html
Jens Larsen - He plays really advanced chord-melody styles. He refers to his style as “Polyphonic” because melody notes, bass lines, and chords are viewed as separate independent voices. I would love to see how you interpret what he is doing because I am still developing my finger style technique. Cheers.
Benjie Stackington, are you familiar with Tim Lerch at all ? He's done some great videos on chord melody and solo Jazz Guitar. ua-cam.com/users/telebasher
Kinda weird hearing bebop lines with that style of guitar tone, I always find it a bit creepy/alien. I think hearing you play it clean makes it a lot clearer where the influence is!
Got to see him live - great set with Randy Brecker. He did a master class near me once and I asked about his picking technique. Found out he picks every single note, no matter how fast he is playing. Geez I hate him ;)
He had a bad accident which left him with nerve damage in his hands and consequently has to superglue or tape the pick to his fingers. Was fortunate to see him a few weeks ago and sounds as amazing as ever. Maybe you hate him even more now! ;)
Hey bro, this has nothing to do with this video, but check out Christiaan van Hermert's channel on gypsy jazz guitar ,I think you'll really dig it! thanks , love ya🎸😎✨🏖️🏕️🏞️

Let me hear your ideas!
how about marc ribot trio i'm confessing
Scofield solo on Wee!
That is indeed a rhythm changes. Maybe that or What We Do or Flat out 🙂
Great video as usual. Hearing MS on "Fat Times" was a defining moment for me.
Amazingly accurate example of Stern’s signature chord stabs over a drone note on top at 7:35. Thank you!
That’s one of the craziest licks I’ve ever heard
I saw him yesterday playing with Dave Weckl, it was the best day of my life.
Great! I was at a Jonathan Kreisberg and Nelson Veras concert. That was fantastic!
I know what you mean, I saw with Dave Weckl, Tom Kennedy and Bob Malach and it was the best gig I have every experienced.

Love this album and this track in particular, so full of life and you can really hear him "going for it" -- thanks, Jens!
Happy to hear that! I really like this solo as well :)
Do you have other songs or artists you would like to see a video on?
Yeah!!!! Thanks. Mike Stern is one of my favorite Jazz/Rock Fusion Guitarist.
You're very welcome Dwayne! Glad you like it! Who would you like to see a video on?
@@JensLarsen More on Mike Stern PLEASE 👌👍🎶🎸 Also, Frank Gamblae and the Fusion Jazz type players.
Thanks Dwayne! I am not a huge fusion jazz fan, but I am sure more will come along the way 🙂

Thanks Dave! I have to admit that I don't know that Miles album at all, but the famous "Fat Time" lick is actually also in these examples 🙂

Great lesson, I liked much the analysis,,, beeing Stern one of my Favourite one I had already in my hands the licks :-)
Thanks Francesco! Glad you like it! Especially since it was your request 🙂
Great lesson Jens, thanks!
Thank you very much Andreas! Who else would you like to see a video on?

@@JensLarsen oh!! Very thanks Jens. I am a suggestion. How to play the Gilda hekselman phrases and voicings? Thanks for you generosity
I like Mike Stern!! Thank you share this video!!!
You're very welcome! I am glad you like it! 🙂
Thank you!! Great video man
Thank you Jack! 🙂 Who else?
Thanks Jens!
You're very welcome Jume!
Metheny on the blues! Some Mike Moreno stuff would be nice too
I will see what I can find on Moreno :)
Thanks for this. I dig Mike Stern, especially on the albums with Miles Davis.
Glad you like it Paul!

YES!!! Mr. Julian Lage please~~~~
I will get to Julian Lage!
Keep on preaching sir

I haven't heard this album in years. Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome Avi! Glad you like it! Who would you like to see a video on?
Might be a challenge: Oscar Peterson.
Doesn't have to be that bad? :)
The interesting vocing Mike Stern uses is actually the 3rd bar of Days of Wine and Roses
Aø(11) is a fairly common voicing? 🙂
You should break down the "Fat Time" solo
I am probably not going to do entire solos, but the famous fat time lick is actually in the examples I went over here.
Have you done a Martin Taylor video yet?
No I haven't , but isn't he mostly known for his chord melody arrangements?

Ok. To be honest a lot of the solo guitar stuff doesn't do that much for me. I really love people playing together 🙂

I would go for scale practice? ua-cam.com/video/SdNzYzLTCp4/v-deo.html&list=PLWYuNvZPqqcHBi6TAQA8f7gWiLmk7Xv-d&index=4
