Canticle gave me anxiety from start to finish but man what an adrenaline-inducing story of action, magic, and heart! Great video breakdown as usual, Jason!
I can't decide whether I think Canticle is a battery for a weapon or a cradle for forming new shard-like beings(or revive splintered ones). perhaps both and canticle is a battery/solar panel for the grand apparatus that is the cradle
Invention might be building these megastructures. Hoid seems to have trouble locating her so she probably doesn't reside on a single planet. Maybe she is busy building stuff like the grand appartus and canticle.
What I like the most about Canticle society is that it’s one that could only exist in the Space Age Cosmere. Could you imagine threnodites trying to outrun the sun with handcarts??
Everyone's out here asking "what is the grand apparatus" and I'm over here thinking about Canticle's possible sentience and WHO is the grand apparatus. Feels like a typical Brandon script flip.
you should have like turned up the brightness very slowly throughout the video, giving the effect of the sun slowly approaching, then at the end it being super bright.
I wanted to add, as someone who studied astronomy and physics in college, rings actually could potentially exist around a planetoid as small as canticle, especially given its high gravity. There are several asteroids, such as 10199 Chariklo, as well as a a couple dwarf planets, with ring systems. The asteroids are even smaller than canticle, at least by radius. There is also a strong possibility that the Earth has had rings at some points in its history (main one would be after the impact that created the moon, although there has been theories about possible other times), and Mars will eventually have a ring system because of its moons having decaying orbits that will eventually lead to them breaking up into rings. The big thing though, is that rings are inherently unstable, and the longest lasting rings are ones with small moons inside them that help maintain them through gravitational interactions. That being said, the cosmere as a whole, at least since the shattering, is young enough that a ring system around a body the size of canticle probably would be stable for a large portion of its history. Timescales for astronomy are typically on the scale of millions or billions of years, so 10 to 20 thousand years is a tiny blip in time on that scale
@@auroraourania7161 Would you happen to know how many moons or how big a single moon would have to be in order for a gas giant to maintain rings? Asking due to an ongoing world building project. Any elaboration would be helpful
It has been over a year since the sunlit man came out and its really a shame how little of the details I remember. Yumi and this are the only cosmere books I haven't read at least twice and there is not really time for me to reread it before WaT comes out next week for I am still finishing up my reread of RoW before then
I don't think the Thaylen sunheart had no Investiture... I think it was much smaller, had very little, and couldn't be used to power anything because it wasn't Connected to Canticle. They've said that you can't put Investiture into a completely empty sunheart, so Zellion's trick wouldn't have worked if it had been completely dead, I believe.
Oh dang! So with the knowledge that sunhearts can be recharged, will people stop offering themselves to the sun? How soon will the planet be overrun with Shades?
I’m not sure. Maybe they’ll continue to sacrifice their sick and dying because the chorus says they should. Rebeke seemed to like the idea of not needing to sacrifice people anymore though
@@jasonioan Sorry to break the immersion for a moment, but people IRL choose to terminate to prevent their own suffering. Outside of the fact that the dying probably would to do that to ease their own suffering, most caring people would probably give themselves over to prevent the shade from terrorizing those that they love. This just stops the barbaric practice of having to maintain a level of sacrifices of healthy individuals in order to maintain sunhearts.
So, does a threnodite shade’s capacity for intelligence depend on their proximity to “The Evil” when they died? What I mean is those who died on Threnody are essentially mindless while those who died on Canticle can think, speak, and create. We’ve seen even more shades that are even more capable beyond that so as to retain their whole identity (SP5).
@@nwnate659 I was going to initially say that we'd need more data on shades on other worlds to be certain. But what other examples do we have? Threnody from The Forests of Hell, Canticle in The Sunlit Man. But I'm struggling to find another example. We did hear about a shade being mentioned in Scadrial broadsheets but not a lot of details there. Am I forgetting another book/ source of information?
@ at the end of Sunlit Man we got a glimpse on board the Night Brigade’s ship and there the captain had shades in the crew. Then in a special preview of Secret Project 5, we learn a Threnodite character we already know has passed away leaving a shade with full self awareness and a perfect sense of identity. A perfect cognitive shadow a la Secret History (Sorry for the ambiguity, trying to keep this spoiler free just in case someone stumbles on these comments in a few years)
Me too. Having been to both now I felt more unsafe on Threnody than I did on canticle. With modern tech, and my Windrunner friend there with me, I wasn’t worried about getting stuck in the sunlight. On Threnody it felt like there was nothing I could to expect hope my copper cloud would hide me.
@ Haha. Maybe get a bronze earning for that extra power. Anyways next week Wind & Truth will come out and I honestly can’t wait for your analysis on that. This is actually the best channel I’ve stumbled across regarding everything Cosmere. Your talent & dedication and to this series is inspiring brother. Maybe in a few years cosmere is gonna hit the mainstream and then this channel will be one of the front runners for the future.
hmm I suspect either canticle is an engine of some kind that stores investiture to do something later or maybe more likely its some sort of investiture trap designed for something or someone highly invested.
If it's effectively collecting and condensing investiture in 1 spot. It could be an attempt to create a Shard or Dawnshard. Is there a stage after a perpendicularity? Or with the comparison to circuits, it could be part of a cosmere scale "circuit."
Someone’s just waiting for the right moment to drain that sucker haha. I think invention is a really good bet, but the question remains as to WHY it was built.
@@asdrubalvect6328 I agree that Canticle was most likely built by Invention. But an equally interesting question is: Who made the Invested Star, and why?
Quite simple really. The planet gets a lot of rain and the highlands get cold really quickly due to the thin atmosphere! Nomad even encounters some in chapter 28!
Considering the Scadrians monitoring and studying the planet from their hidden bases, I’m wondering if Kelsier or Sazed had something to do with the building of Canticle
Interesting. I hadn’t considered that because to me it reads more like they’re trying to figure out how it works too, but I suppose they could be monitoring it for that reason
I don’t think we know if the original Zellion was a native to Threnody, so someone from Scadrial could have at least had a hand in bringing people to Canticle
Props for not reading the sacramental prayer. It's open for the public anyone can take part and hear it no problem but it's not supposed to be recorded for most circumstances. Good job respecting it.
The video didn’t call for it. Besides, I would’ve just read D&C 20:79 which would’ve been fine. Anyway, I did put thought into it and I’m glad you appreciated it.

How did you do that anyway? Managed to bond a Cryptic during one of your travels to Roshar or were you able to find an other for of lightweaving in the cosmere as it is mentioned existing. (Even though this looks quite Yollish in my opinion and the Rosharen version is set to be most close to that)
