The Worldhopper ball was quite the event! In this video I discuss the good, the bad, my experience, and if it was worth it. It was one of the highlights of Dragonsteel Nexus 2024. Thumbnail photos by Dragonsteel/Julia Stockton Photography and Lilio Camere. A more typical Jasonioan style video will release in January. Music used at the worldhopper ball reel portion of the video at 18:43 is Calm ...

Connection and Bonds in the Cosmere
Переглядів 11 тис.5 місяців тому
In Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, one of the most important mechanics that’s lurking in the background is the spiritual attribute Connection. Connection, sometimes referred to as “Capital ‘C’ Connection” by the community, is one of the building blocks of all magic in the Cosmere. In Mistborn it connects allomancers to Preservation so they can use Allomancy, in the Way of Kings connection is stren...

Wayne could've been Mischief instead of Harmony. Satisfy Ruin by messing stuff up all the time, but only a little. Satisfy Preservation by making the mess ups causally keep things from changing too much. Similarly ineffective as Harmony, but more fun.
Yooooo I love this idea!
Post Wind and Truth addendum time :P
More like “what the heck is going on with Nightblood” time. I think everything else was either confirmed, or right on the money.
@@jasonioan really big changes, so interested to see where it goes.
When’s he gonna talk about the greatest invested weapon of all: the stick?
Stick deserves its own 45 minute special
Thanks for the video! It was super informative!
Mhmm, mhmmm, oh yeah! I know some of these words! ✨️
Yippee!
idk who this dude is but he living life for sure
Fast forward 30 years to when we get a What If series for the Cosmere.
actually, i believe that anti-stormlight is not exactly anti-investiture, rather it is kinda charged by a force, opposite of honor. another explanation could be soundwaves, as those were used to create it, but i don't understand enough about that to speak confidently
They are described as destructive interference. They seem to be, in practice, a hybrid of that concept and anti-matter
@jasonioan not impossible, but I believe that the anti-stormlight is not anti-investiture, as it has not been said to react to voidlight the same way. Therefore, this is investiture, shaped to destroy honor, not adolnasium
Brandon Sanderson Cosplay when?
I believe there was an annotation that said if the war between Hallandren and Idris continued, Yesteel would have taught the Idrians how to Awaken steel. Meaning if the war went on as planned, more Nightbloods would have been created
Every time I see you post a new video I have a little party inside my head! I ignore about half the videos my subscriptions post, but I watch every single one of yours. As long as you're making videos, I'll be watching them.
That means so much to me! I'm glad you enjoy them. A big 28 minute video is on the way! I'm working on the graphics now, but it'll take a week or two!
Omg I love your videos so sad I didn’t run into you at dsnx
Thank you! I'm bummed I wasn't able to say hi! I was doing Squire stuff for a lot of the con, but I did 3d print some goodies to hand out at the event. Maybe next year!
@ I’ll be on the lookout for sure
As a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I greatly thank you for calling us by our full and real name instead of “Mormons” or “The LDS” and even though a small thing is greatly appreciated
Now that I’ve seen more videos I think he might also be a member so…
@noahknows9991if he's not, he's at least somewhat familiar. What other things from other videos have you noticed that make you think he is?
O e thing is the fact he knew about the sacramental prayer and talked about needing to read the warmth prayer the same way as reading the sacrament prayers and two he said in another video something he used to do in the BYU building which while not everyone there is a member it is good evidence
Spoilers for WaT Man I hope you won't have to go to Roshar for a while, Retribution is not someone you want to meet. Plus the big time bubble around the planet you will be there for years in hour time just to film a video
My upload schedule would be destroyed haha. Thankfully I was in the cognitive realm when all that was happening so I should be good. And who knows, maybe I filmed some stuff on Roshar that I haven't released yet.
I need to get my hands on bavadins secret. Gonna have to learn to create mini perpendicularity.
I might know a guy who can get you a lot of purified Dor you could store in one place
@jasonioan oo that could help but for now I need get the stomfather to storming accept my oaths
I gotta find a reliable perpendicularity. All of these worlds seem so interesting.
Bro this is an accurate depiction of everytime either of us texts the other to hang out or talk Cosmere haha
This is a very accurate depiction of what it’s like trying to find a time to hang out with you 😂
Spoiler to Mistborn era 1 and Secret History: I like to believe that the shades don't go on like other people in other worlds because there is no perpendicularity on Threnody, unlike in Scadrial when Kelsier was greeted by Preservation in the Cognitive Realm following his death, but Threnody not having a perpendicularity means that the dead cannot move on to the Cognitive Realm to the place of no return, therefore they stay in the Physical Realm, rotten, lose their sanity by the Investiture that got twisted after the Shattering of Ambition, stated by Khriss.
Thanks so much for posting this! I missed out on this panel during the con and was really bummed.
Biggest Cosmere butterfly effect: what if Aidan had stopped dragging his feet and bought a ticket to go to Dragonsteel Nexus?
33:40 Isn't the nowhere a version of the Spiritual Realm?
Finally, was so sad I missed this one. Stupid cool to see you do a panel
I really liked these What Ifs.
Thanks for posting this! This was one of the panels I sadly missed out on attending.
I knew you were big into this series but I didn’t know you were part of panels for it! Maybe I need to finally get into it… what’s the best place to start? It seems like it’s quite a big series now lol
Not Jasonian, but the usual recommendations depend on your tastes and are generally between: Warbreaker (Romance/colour-based magic) Tress of the Emerald Sea (a cosmere stand-alone similar to Princess Bride - my favourite writing of Sandersons) Mistborn Era 1/The Final Empire (Solid series with a really interesting magic system, premise, and characters) Elantris (If you want to go chronological publishing - writing is very clunky compared to Sandersons modern stuff) Stormlight Archive (If you feel ready to jump straight into (very good) 400-500k word books) The only thing you really should avoid - apart from direct sequels obviously - is Mistborn Era 2/Secret History (starting with Alloy of Law) and the Sunlit Man. Both have pretty major spoilers for other books.
Just jumping in to echo what @lachlankidd6517 said. I'd say you should start with Mistborn or Tress. If you want some Anime tropes Yumi is a good place to start. If you want to jump in the deal end, the Way of Kings is magnificent. Just don't start with the Sunlit Man or Secret History haha.
What if Vasher had revealed his true self before the Court of God's as soon as they started debating whether or not to go to war?
What if Rashek had been benevolent? Also, what if he had been able to use the Well of Ascension again?
That’s a really good one! I almost think he’d wipe out the final empire and try to start again from scratch. It seems a bit out of character with the whole preservation thing, but there’s a WoB that says he once tried to destroy his own empire sooo.
@jasonioan It's also possible that there would not have been a Final Empire. Perhaps, he could have revealed Ruin's deception to the Keepers and worked WITH them.
Isn't it implied that Rashek tried to be benevolent at first, but it failed ? The Final Empire in its current state as of Era 1 is only the result of his latest style of governance, not how it started.
It seems to me that he was unsatisfied with the state of Scadrial. But, also wanting to control everything, never got around to letting people improve the place. I’m skeptical if he would be able to come up with a political system that was both good for the people (and that he liked) before the power of the well ran out
@diepie5144 Well, yeah. That's the opposite of my what if.
"what kind of hat would he wear?..."😂
These are the important questions we need answers for.
Your comment on the socioeconomic implications of the currency of the Cosmere is very interesting. What you think about how almost every currency in the Cosmere is utilitarian; they all have purpose outside of being money: spheres can be light sources, and coins can be pushed off of.
I think for things like spheres and coins, a clear exchange rate could be created. Not everyone in Scadrial uses metal coins for allomancy and the majority of people on Roshar use spheres primarily for currency. I think it comes down to primary use vs secondary use. Just because Jason Borne can kill someone with a hundred dollar bill doesn’t mean the value of the currency goes up with a secondary use for a fraction of the population. The ability of spheres to hold light, when available, is secondary to their value. Aluminum runs into a similar issue. Aluminum has a clear secondary value on Scadrial and Roshar, but what of Canticle or Taldain? Would people there value aluminum at all outside the value as a raw material? Maybe Silverlight mercantile has an exchange rate system already set up. Hmm…
I feel like the "God Beyond" is not necessarily an entity, more like the concept of death and what comes after. Even the Shards said, that they don't know what comes after death, if there's another realm or what else happens to the souls of the dead when they get sucked into the tiny sun in shadesmar. I think the God Beyond is just that, the belief that theres a purpose to the universe, that there's a "real" God out there, compareable to the abrahamic God. Like when Dalinar talkes about the Almighty. He says that Honor was not the Almighty and Adonalsium wasn't the Almighty either, because the Almighty couldn't have been killed. The Almighty for Dalinar is just the concept of a God how we know it. I think that's what the God Beyond is too, just under a different name. If it actually exists or not is as much up for debate as the question of the existence of the abrahamic God is here.

Love the video, love that you did the whole thing on a beach. I'd really like to see more content on the physics of the cosmere (realmatics?), sort of a scientific lens like what Khriss provides in the ars arcanums or Sigzil and Navani's perspectives in Stormlight. Keep it up man! Edit: and of course Marasi's perspective!
❤
Clearly, the trick is to go as a worldhopper from Scadrial and bring your drinks in your vials.
(This got long, I'm sorry lmao) Nodding along hard to a lot of this! The atmosphere and setting were fantastic, exceeded my expectations. I totally missed that the glyphward station was a thing when I was there, but that's on me for not exploring enough. The performances I did manage to see were really fun, great acting. But after I left the edge of the dance floor to do other stuff, I lost the chance to see anything else lol. I'm short and that made it worse but I think even tall people probably had trouble because everyone was crowded around and not moving and I don't really blame anyone because they also paid to see the show, but yeah it was ROUGH. I was in the late night Friday session and still thought the music was insanely loud a lot of the time. Maybe that's autism speaking, but it was pretty uncomfortable at times. And this is in contrast to barely being able to make out what the actors were saying a bunch of the time - I heard there were mic issues in our session at least but also I just have trouble hearing people speak sometimes, and I wish there'd been a script to stand in as real-life captions. Kinda want to know what's going on lol. (I was lucky to be fairly close to Chana getting rushed out but I also have heard that if you weren't, some people had no idea that anything was happening at all.) I didn't have the chouta, wasn't a fan of the curry. Loved the drinks though (violet and orange for me). Some of the other Shardcasters and I lined up to get in fairly early and when we got in I went straight for the drinks bc I heard the lines were bad, and got my second drink much later in the night when things were calmer, but it was also hard to tell where the lines WERE a lot of the time which was stressful whether or not I was in one because trying to figure out if I was in the way or where I should go was difficult. Dragonsteel could have and imo should have communicated more about what the event was, especially when it's so expensive and requires dressing up. You don't have to give away everything that's going to happen, but a more precise and accurate description would have done wonders. I also really think they should've made the menu public ahead of time, esp with it being so limited (there's only so much you can do in a big event like this, they can't have unlimited options, but it does make things harder); there are so many different kinds of food issues or allergies or preferences that people have, and going into the event not really knowing if you'll be able to eat there or how you will be eating is not fun. Overall I think Dragonsteel needs to stop leaning so hard on "there's always another secret" and learn that it's a better experience when not EVERYTHING is a secret. (But that's a topic of conversation that could go for a while.) Did I ultimately have a good time and do I want to go to the next one? Yeah. But yeah, there were some big hiccups too.
Petition to be your official chouta taste tester in that future video 🙏🏻
I can already see the headlines: "Local Man consumes Chouta For Science"
It's crazy that it took you so long for drinks. In our session there were drink lines, but they only took about 5 minutes (or less) to get through. The lines for signing the guest book or any of the character photo ops were the ones that really took a long time for us. We didn't get to do any of the character photo ops or meetings because we chose to wait to sign the guest book.
I went to session 4 and still had a lot of notes for things that were various levels of rough, but my goodness the set was beautiful!
Agreed! They knocked that out of the park!
Everyone I was in line with expected a seated dinner experience. As soon as I realized it was a “Knight’s Tale”-ing of a modern wedding into the setting, it met all of my new expectations.
Heya Jason, Do you have a discord server?
Sort of. I have a private one I’ve used for years and earlier this week I started working on a public/members discord. I’m also in the 17th shard discord server so if you’re already in that one I’m there too.
@jasonioan would love to join a public if/when that happens!
I loved what they were going for. But agree with the criticisms. So hard to see anything. And drink queue was real. Agree with the loudness... Which is why i always always always have a pair of earplugs on me in my keychain. I did love the emo music at the end, but for me that was bonus inside joke time.
Yes, give us the recipe!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll 100% take that chouta recipe video, I've been wanting a recipe to try out.
I’ve gotten a couple of these comments. Perhaps I’ll need to move that one further up the queue
Hey there fellow first night survivor! A lot of your feelings echo my own. The music being too loud, the lines being two long, and the seating being a bit too sparse were really rough. By the time we got through the hour long line my friend really needed a drink so we were in the drink line. We then stepped out of the drinkline to watch the first part of the show and had a good view of the speeches, first dance, and Sandersons speach. We missed the rest of the performances so we could get my friend something to drink. By the time she had a drink the volume of the music was really overwhelming her so we ended up taking a few more pictures... skipping the foodline and heading out. I definately feel like less people for the first session while they worked out some of the kinks might have helped. That many people in the room did make it a bit unweldy. That being said i am curious to see how they improve the event for next year. Ive been to dragonsteel for 3 years now and each year they listen to feed back and do there best to address and improve attendees experiences. Shout out to the actors though they knocked it outta the park
I agree! Dragonsteel is usually pretty good at taking feedback, so I reckon the next one will be better
I saw the title and immediately said Threnody. I’m glad to know other people share my opinion!
I'm wondering if the third type of bond could be something similar to honor blades (or, spoilers for wind and truth, night blood after learning how) being able to grant surges. Those are heavily invested entities in the physical realm there are able to grant power.
Perhaps. And holy cow. The new nightblood lore from WaT is crazy. Just… wowza
Hey Jason! It was a pleasure meeting you at the ball, though I'm sorry you didn't get to talk to Jackson as much as Wit. Thank you very much for all the kind words about my performance. I really did work hard at being punchable and getting a good voice down, and those seemed to be two qualities that people especially enjoyed from the character! It was a ton of fun and I'm beyond grateful to have had the experience. Definitely the first show had the most hiccups, the rest went pretty smoothly. The drink lines, as far as I could tell, were also *significantly* better in future sessions. The folks who put together the event had to use the catering company provided by the convention center, so they should get a little grace there since they were stuck with no options, the folks handling food/drink weren't their staff, etc. But I believe they got their act together for future shows and the lines were more normal. The music *was* loud that first night. For the next two days I had to rest my voice for most of the day and chug tea because I'd spent the first night yelling over the music so I could actually interact/engage with people! So you're spot on there too. They did turn that down in future sessions. Anyway, I think you've got a lot of great feedback here. Something tells me the seating issues and visuals especially will be big learning points for the future! If there's a silver lining about that first show it'd probably be: If I'm remembering correctly, this was the only show Brandon attended that people were allowed to mingle with him at. He came to a later event, but we kindly (Wit unkindly) asked people to leave him be so he could enjoy the night with his family like any other attendee. The other silver lining for this show was that this one was *before* we realized that people were stealing tons of extra goblets to take home to their friends, and future shows we had to do disclaimers to ask people NOT to take them because they would be getting a free one lololol. So some people who went to the first night heisted tons of goblets! 😂
Thanks for commenting, it’s great to hear from you! Thank you for confirming that the volume was adjusted and the lines were more reasonable in later shows. That’s what I had heard, but it’s good to hear it from someone who was there for every show. Once again, you did a phenomenal job! I’m looking forward to chatting with Jackson someday when you’re not consumed by Wit haha. The ball was a fun time even with the problems and I’m sure they’ll learn from these hiccups in the future. And it was so funny to see people try to sneak out with goblets just to be given one in the next room. Like, what did they do in that situation? Give the swiped goblet back? Try to smuggle out this huge goblet while being given a box with one?
You did amazing and manages to make waiting in line a lot more fun. I hope you had an absolute blast as wit... even if it was a bit rough on the voice.
Their chouta was likely soulcasted
I think a lot of people expected a sit down dinner. Also, the goblet was a big part of the price?!? I mean they are great but I'd rather have a sit down meal than a take away goblet. Oh well.
