  • New Video Series! Budget Bushcraft Gear. Video one: Surplus Haversacks. I look at two popular choices in military surplus. The Finnish Gas Mask Bag and the Polish Bread Bag. Both great options and very affordable.

These are still popular 5 years later. Great to see a side by side video as I am interested in both. The Finnish bag seems out of stock most places so I ordered a Polish bag. I love the lid, snaps, fabric, and overall look of the Finnish bag but love the pockets on the Polish. I hope one day to own both.

The strap works like the British 58 pattern. Place the rectangular ring over the roller ring, then pass the strap under the roller trapping the rectangular ring under it. seems loose but try and pull it apart.

I have 2 Finnish Gas Mask Bag. Love them. I just got the Czech Military Shoulder Bag and it’s Freekin awesome. It stands up on its own due to the wood pieces on the bottom. I’ll be using it to carry wine. It will hold 4 bottles no prob. Aside from that it will make a great haversack. Got mine from Coleman’s. $10. Can’t beat it. Came like new. Just hand washed it and it’s ready to go. Love these bags. The Finnish one is my sons overnight bag. Can’t recommend these bags enough

I have both of these bags. I really like the Finnish Gas mask bag, more so than the Polish bread bag because I can secure it around my waste keeping it out of the way. I used it this year as my hunting pack on daily hunts and it worked great. Thanks for sharing, look forward to more budget gear.

Hello. I started my bushcraft life with an old GI gas mask bag. Loved it. Together that bag and I had many adventures. Edgy and real. It seems simple is often the best way to trek. Good luck and Godspeed.

I like my Fin bag alot. I double cobra weaved paracord over the strap for padding. added a loop sleve for my tomahawk. Also some top straps for my poncho and woobie.

I use those canvas haversacks during summer, while on winter I prefer better quality and waterproof bags

I'm getting the Finnish bag for gathering items because in the event of a survival situation becoming necessary a person would need to basically become a hunter gatherer and scavenge for food or parts or tools ect. A shoulder bag would be the most handy.

Forgive me man .....not picking holes .....but the buckle system is done wrong (I got it wrong at first also) the roller goes through the d ring . The 2 roller rings give different points of adjustment.... though if you select the upper one you can work the strap through twice. It seems to work pretty good.
The Finn bag is cool esp with the belt ....but then the Polish bag can be worn on a belt as a lumbar pack and already has strapping for an undercarriage option. My Polish bag came with no strap but I used a strap from one of those Chinese molle water bottle pouches and it works perfectly.

OooooooooH like this idea. I'm on a budget...lol. Both these are very nice. Way better then the one I have...forget what type. But it works OK. You did give me a few great ideas for using it. My one I adapted to be a small back pack/haversack. Going to a review on it next as part of my sorting out my kits for MN camping. Great video looking forward to more. Budget always a good idea. Thumbs up.

I carry a basic canvas haversack as my EDC bag most of the time. It has a couple of compartments, and a large inside compartment. The only modification I've done with it so far is just adding a pad to the shoulder strap. They work well as an between option that looks retro and doesn't scream military EDC Not a bad choice.

Good review. Finnish bag is amazing. For the price they can't be beaten. Someone really put some thought into the design of this bag. It is the most comfortable haversack/messenger/day bag I have. The design causes it to fit snugly to the contour of the waist. The waist band may seem unnecessary but after you use it a little you find it can be used to take a little weight off the shoulder strap adding to the comfort. It is just the right size...too big and you tend to get it too heavy for a shoulder bag. Too small and you can't carry enough stuff.

I have the Finnish gas mask and I love it!! It is my satchel bag for the weekends going around town and going to church on Sundays. The pockets hold pens/sharpies, mini Altoids tin, bic lighter, notebook, aspirin bottle, hand sanitizer, and chargers. In the main open bag I'll have a water bottle, small book, and my leatherman in a sheath. It looks good, it's practical, user friendly, and just an all around great shoulder bag. But I have been interested in a Polish bread bag for a while now. Great comparision video!

I think surplus is the way to go. The quality is huge for cheap.
I chose the german gas mask bag, about the same size as these but flektarn cordura with rubberized interior makingit water proof, a feature that is useful for my area. This bag has an interesting close system with a brief roll top then a rubber strap with holes on one side catches a little plastic spike on the other. Quite smart as its both one handed and easy which must have been an intentional feature. Unfortunately my bag has just one small seperate pocket inside but I dont see this as much of a negative seeeing as its a smaller bag.

I have the first bag which am in the process of modifying, I had a snap break and replaced both snaps with similar to the inside snaps and I added some straps to the bottom for a bedroll. Getting ready to add some webbing to the sides and back for attachments.

great options!! I'd love to have any of them! After sweating profusely inside my gore-tex clothes for a couple years while I trek up and down the patagonian Andes, I am now completely into wool, canvas, oilskins, leather, etc! these bags fit perfectly into this frame... I already bought the WWII swiss breadbag as well as some british model 37 webbing... I hope I can expand my gear with these 2 models as well!

    1. thank you
    2. i use the bags as inexpensive/protective bags for binoculars. Many binos are sold without a case. Or, if sold with a case, there is no space for the following bino accessories: extra eye and objective lens covers and a cleaning kit.

I use the Finnish bag for a haversack and the polish bread bag has my swedish mess kit and food. I like them so much that I've ordered duplicates of each. Great bags and a real bargain! You could wear the Finnish one like USGI gas mask bag, use the shoulder strap as waist strap and waist strap as thigh strap.
And the Polish buckle strap ain't that hard to do, one way is fast and the other is tight.

Thanks! Excellent timing, I've been looking for a haversack for my EDC bag (I'm a country boy, my EDC is geared towards that sort of environment) and both of these are on the short list. The Finn is actually leading the pack and seeing this just confirms my thoughts.

Longhunter if you want something bigger then a cheap backpack to start them with then maybe the US alice pack or the swedish LK35 is good (mine cost £17.50, about $22 ish) it can be adjusted to fit a smaller person as it's an external metal frame, though you might need to add a waist belt to the lk for comfort. My lk35 can fit my 10 year old son once the straps were adjusted.

I water proofed my Finish gas mask bag with boiled Linseed oil. Works great and smells good :) As for the Polish Bread bag, you should watch some video's on said bread bag too see how the closing straps really work. As for the two main pockets, you got it right, water battle in one side mess kit in the other. Of course they would be polish designed. Also, the Polish Bread Bag is getting hard to find.

Update: The Finnish bags from 5col were so good I ended up with 2! Awesome bags. I'd never heard of 5col, but they turned out to be solid. The service and communication was quick and courteous. I'd recommend them to anyone.
Seriously- buy 2 of these bags! They're inexpensive, very well made and really pretty cool looking in person. And we don't know how long the surplus bags will last. It would also work well on campus, in nice office areas or everyday commuting.
Could even make a decent active response bag, small bug out bag or whatever. The pockets inside are really big and can easily hold AR mags. Just don't overload the bags- use them the way they were designed. Big, bulky but lightweight things go in the big compartment, and smaller and heavier items go in the pockets.

Finally! I'm not the only one that uses these. I have 6 or 8 of them(not these exact ones but from other countries). I use them for specialties like a medical bag, ammo bag, car kits, tool bags etc. Great size and CHEAP! Forgive a new subscriber if I am screwing up and please let me know if you don't want me to post this kind of stuff and I won't but a good site for this stuff(I am NOT affiliated with them in any way other than a satisfied customer) is hessenantique.com. They have, sort of obvious by the name, a lot of old East German, West German, WWI and WWII German, and current Bundeswehr bags as well as Polish, Finn, Norwegian, Belgian, Italian, Swedish... I use silicone spray on some of the more modern ones and wax on the older ones. Looking forward to checking out your older vids and the new. Like I said please let me know if you don't want me to post sites on here. I am a big boy and it wont hurt my feelings or lose you a subscriber. I have used those guys for years and figured I'd pass it on to some like-minded people. Be well. RB
