When I entered the 1st grade in 1947, military surplus from WW II was abundant. My "Haversack-style" book bag for grades 1-10 was a U.S. Army gas mask bag with adjustable shoulder & waist straps; & it cost me a whopping 25 cents! Your video brought back meaningful memories & post-WW II days when our oudoor gear was primarily military surplus & common household or hardware store items. At age 83, I still love the woods & one of my woods-walk bags is a European surplus haversack-style shoulder bag with interior dividers & compartments. You provided a very interesting & meaningful presentation; your haversack load-outaddresses very basic outdoor needs. Opinel knives are hard to beat! Thanks for sharing, & may God bless you, sir!

I'm carrying a Romanian haversack from the 1980s. I treated the canvas to make it like oil cloth. I've had it four years, and it's served me well.

Ah yes, the M/60 gas mask bag for M/61 gas mask (a Nokia Rubber copy of US M9 mask). The bag is a derivative of US M4 Lightweight Service Mask bag, made between 1960-early 90's. The whole mask and it's equipment were discarded as a waste in 00's, as the Kemira/Scott/3M M/95 mask and it's bag had been stocked in large enough quantities for war time use. Milsurp dealers bought pallets of it for pennies per set, as it was made for 750k strong army. I remember the days you could buy those for 5€ for the whole set. Now days it's closer to 30-40€ for the whole set, 15-25€ for the bag. I have multiple and the one I use has seen daily use for 15 years. Still goes strong. There is a difference in the canvas, the thinner ones are most likely late production. [SA] marked ones were made until '69 and tower logo is '70 onwards. That is the FDF property mark. My tower marked has thicker canvas, so that tells me that the change in material was maybe in (late?) 80's, to make it a bit cheaper.
I wish that level of quality bags were still made and used. Everything is polyester in these days. I wish stuff was still made in Finland. Gas mask production is gone, sold to Scott, rubber production went to Serbia, clothes and gear are made in Estonia, Marttiini knifes went to Estonia, The State Garment Factory that made all military, police, fire, post office, taxi driver, bus driver etc. uniforms and civilian clothes went under, Jalas shoe factory was sold to Swedes, Lapua Nammo is still majority in shares owned by Finnish goverment, but half of it is owned by Norwegian state. Sako was sold to Beretta, but still has factory in Finland and Valmet, that did everything made of steel, stopped making ships, planes, guns, trains and tractors to make paper machines. Tampella that made artillery, mortars and big machines of all kinds and linen fabric, went under. So much has been sold or went under in 90's and 00's. Even Nokia Phones was sold to Microsoft in 2010's and then disbanded.

One feature I like to add to my bags are ties for a jacket. Install 2 grommets cross ways about 12 inches up from the fixed end of the strap. Thread with a 24 inch shoe lace. The other shoe lace is installed either at the base of the strap or some where half way down the bag using another pair of grommets. Tie upper shoelace around the mid point of your jacket. Fold over and tie second lace. Easy way to carry a jacket as the day warms up

while tweezers are good to have, for the size and weight involved it is really worth it to have a dedicated tick key. they are only a couple bucks, and do a much better job of getting the entire tick out. you just drop it over the tick, flat side down, and pull back slow. it removes the entire thing safe and clean.
other than that, good load out.

I use a WWII haversack, got 2 different sizes. I added Apartment on the top lid. But I’ve got that finished bag too. It is a great bag. I keep electronic gear in it.
Really enjoyed your video. I wish you the best of luck I’ve been watching videos since I retired and 2004.

Gas mask bags always make great day bags because they nearly all have the multiple pockets inside them for the decontamination kits, cloves, detector paper books, and naps sets. The modern ones still have the multiple compartments but lack the aesthetics of the old canvas and leather. Somehow I have not seen the Fin bags before, but they remind me of the US lightweight service mask bag M6 minus the center stud. I sometimes use a vintage Bulgarian one that is much the same as the Fin bag and a great bag for all the same reasons.

Got the Finn gas mask bag, it’s the lighter one, my first haversack, would like to get the heavy canvas one. Really like the design of the bag with the internal pockets, enjoyed the video

Found one in a thrift store that an artist had painted a large red moped on it. Well done but not my vibe. Rattle canned it in OD and it is my daily work bag. Lunch ,files, and hat, gloves, rain gear live in it all the time plus whatever else I deem necessary.

IMO the main thing that makes a haversack a haversack (instead of a bicycle messenger bag) is the vertical length being at least 2 inches longer than its width. Otherwise the bags feel oddly placed against the body. There’s also the trend of guys LOADING their sacks. Personally I’d rather keep mine almost empty while my ruck does the heavy lifting. Use the haversack for carrying emergency essentials or as a forage sack on short day treks

Awesome bag Sir! Can you tell me where you got it for $10 please? I can't seem to find one except the ebay bag for $36.00. I want one for ten. It's a great size bag for a small survival bag or a day hiking bag with your lunch and your emergency EDC stuff that is always with you on your person. It's just awesome. I need to find one. Any ideas where I can get one for a good price like you did? Please let me know and thanks for the great video. Hope to hear back from you soon.
