Wonderful kit. I see a lot of elements of the WW2 pack in the design. One of which the axe handle is fed through. Was for folding trench tool. Way cool.
You had a map of Texas assumed you from Texas. If I had waited to the end of the video ,I would have realized you're from New Mexico. Best Mexican food in the world. True art form. Thank you for the video.

I live in New Mexico so I really like your videos. This inspired me to get a haversack (old army issue but I can easily add buckles and sew in compartments. it has a rubberized waterproof liner though which is cool) and it's a great day bag and light weight to carry in my pack. Although I prefer to weave my molle. I have a pouch and canteen and they are much more comfortable when walking to have them secure instead of hanging.
nice! a lot of the old army issue equipment is great stuff, especially if modified to suit your needs and likes.

I have been camping and bivouacking since I was in the Cub Scouts, and I have owned and used many haversacks over the years. Many. The Hidden Woodsmen version is certainly one of the very best I haver ever used. right now, it is the one I most frequently use. I don't think you can go wrong. Very well built. Nice video.

Wonderful review. I just traded some gear for an older version of one of Malcom's Haversacks on BushCraftUSA and can't wait to get it. I also am enjoying the rest of your channel! I was stationed at White Sands Missile Range back in the 80s when I was enlisted Army and was one of the Scout Masters and Explorer Leaders on post. We got the kids out to the Needles as often as we could. Can't say that I miss the desert at all (I don't do well at 112˚F no matter how 'dry' the heat, and I vastly prefer the same boreal forests here in New England that Malcom designs his gear in) but it was always a good adventure and it is good to see someone enjoying it as well as you seem to.
I like that bag and how you have modified its use. It is always good to see you in New Mexico enjoying the desert and its beauty. Have a Merry Christmas and see you next year. Thank you James.

PS I spent some time in Flagstaff & a few years on the high desert across the CA border.
all the bushcraft style videos ive seen have all been in wooded forests and the like. Seeing this video and knowing that you are from and use this equipment in the american southwest is awesome, since that's also where I live and do all my camping and hiking. Definitely a setup I will be looking into :)

Very well done review, James. Great scenery, music and showing how the haversack can be used in the real world. I think the only thing people might be wondering about is an approximate price point. I think your handle idea is an excellent one!
damn i forgot to mention that. as of right now, the haversack is being sold 65 to 95 bucks depending on the color or pattern.

I am out here in Vegas. I have also lived in the area Junkyard fox is in this video. I can tell both of you it is very different. I have been doing bushcraft out here in the Vegas area. But I find myself going to the higher elevation due to the heat. I agree its nicecto some desert guys out there.

Also I make my own fixin wax ,if you don’t know what that is look up fixin wax on UA-cam. I don’t sell them I just use it for chap stick,cuts,waterproofing gear,treating leather, &wood and steel on my axes and knives. I would love to send you some just out of appreciation of your channel. Hi James. Didn't mean to mislead. I do not have a Hidden Woodsmen bag... at least not yet. I do have a couple of shoulder bags I use and I have seen other Canadians using Malcolm's haversack. I guess I was trying to say how versatile the design can be

Malcolm heard you. He added a lifting handle on top. I have two of these bags, one set for the back country, and the other for city travels. Great for summer when you need less gear and don't want a sweaty back.

I'd put the shamog draped under the top flap of the bag to keep it out of the dirt but still handy. Good system you have there.

great video on great gear by a great guy, today our high temp was 4 degrees, with wind chill, minus 20, can you send some of your weather up here to the northeast.
love your vids don't get time to respond but your channel has very good info and advice, since I live in southern Arizona alot of what you do pertains to the same environment that I am in as well and I am not from the desert so you put out great info for me to study before I hit the trails.

The bag I use is pretty similar in size and function, its english army surplus from ww2 made in heavy webbing and its so sturdy I will probably go to the grave with it. BUT it got something your bag dont have, all the buckles are made of brass. I live in a very cold place and I have destroyed quite a few plastic buckles before, now I take spare buckles but its annoying when they break.. Its also great to see a guy that brings real coffee into the field and not only those silly bags haha. What do you sleep in at night btw? You seem like a guy that would carry blanket, I do at spring, summer and autumn but not winter.

Thank you for reviewing the bag and your gear. It seems to me that some items are superfluous. There is little food, and it’s probably worth taking more water in the desert. Unless, of course, there are not enough sources of it on the route. Tell me, how comfortable is it for your shoulder to carry a full bag all day? I understand that everyone chooses for themselves. It’s just that I’m used to a standard backpack, although I won’t refuse a medium-sized bag to go to the radial exits from the camp. Thanks

nice pack and kit
i use a lot my magnifying glass for fire ignition (i live in the south of Spain, so plenty of sun here), now i collect dry and worn flowers of a thistle we name "Cardo Mariano" (Sybilum marianum) they ignite very easy with the lens or any source of spark, even the spark of a depleted buthane or gas lighter. (got to try it with flint and steel)

so I also live in the desert. I love bushcraft and one thing I have been unable to make and find a video on is making a survival bow in the desert. as you know in the desert there sent as many resources and I was wondering if you could make a video on that. awesome videos! thank you for your time!
