    The tiger packed an 88mm gun. Modified from a very good antiaircraft gun. It could handle any allied tank.

    • @jonandkristen
      @jonandkristen 3 місяці тому +15

      Yes, but also the M4A3E8 (Easy Eight - the model “Fury” is) Sherman tank, with its improved 76 mm; could penetrate heavy tanks such as the Tiger and Panther tanks. So in reality, it shouldn’t be struggling to penetrate the frontal armor like it is.
      Secondly, Tiger tanks were actually very uncommon on the Western Front. In reality, Stugz, Panzer III & IV’s, and Panthers. A majority of encounters with Tigers on the Western Front were actually other models (mainly ones stated above). An overwhelming majority of Tigers were sent to fight the Soviets on the Eastern front, however Tigers did exist on the Western Front as well.
      That part is forgivable, however the next one definitely isn’t as factual.
      No, later Sherman’s, especially this late in the war, wouldn’t be explosive lateen death traps that went up within seconds and had turrets that would explode off the tank. Yes, the first models of Sherman’s did experience this, but it wasn’t usually from fuels combusting and setting the tank a blaze. The primary issues why Sherman’s did have catastrophic failures when hit was actually caused by ammunition storage. It was common for rounds of 75 mm to sit freely within the turret or crew compartment, and when the thinner armor was penetrated, the ammunition would cook off causing these catastrophic issues. By this time of the war, they had figured out the culprit and redesigned or refitted Sherman’s with wet storage of ammunition. This greatly reduced the probability of Sherman’s going up with the force to pop the turret.
      In reality, the Sherman was a pretty great tank, especially with its speed, maneuverability, and its ease of maintenance. The Sherman was never originally designed to fight other tanks, but instead be infantry support and use its speed to exploit gaps in enemy lines. With upgrades like the 76 mm gun, it could properly take on heavier tanks instead of relying on greater numbers, tank destroyers, and exploding weak points on tanks (like the rear) for victories.

      The British made a version of the Sherman called the “Firefly” they took off the normal 76 mm low velocity gun and mounted a 17 pounder anti tank cannon. The firefly’s would eat Tigers alive. Tigers get a lot of attention and they were a tough tank but they weren’t invincible and by the end of the war the Allies had tanks that could take out Tigers. The German Panther tank was probably more dangerous but the tiger gets all the attention.

      @jonandkristen
      Without the rare HVAP rounds, even the 76mm Sherman struggled frontally against the Tiger and Panther. It would have to get dangerously close. It could not penetrate from the distance in Fury. If you note, when they got closer they were shooting from angles, which would make the Tiger's armour even thicker.
      The Tiger I had unique nickel steel of 265 Brinell Hardness on its 100mm front plates. Together with the slight angles (24 degrees on the lower front) this gave it an effective frontal thickness of up to 130mm. Far than that on the mantlet in places. No Sherman 76mm is going through the front of a Tiger without HVAP unless at a very close range.
      The 76mm was seen as a disappointment without HVAP. Both the US 2nd and 6th Armored Divisions were not satisfied with it and told Eisenhower in their reports in early 1945.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 3 місяці тому +4

      @ryanhampson673
      The Tiger I was stronger all round than the Panther. Even the rear plate was 80mm thick and sloped somewhat. That was double the Panthers rear plate thickness.
      Though the Panther had a slightly superior anti tank gun up to 2,000 metres (but not over that distance) the Tiger Is gun was a bit more accurate and it's HE round was far more powerful.
      The Tiger II was considerably more fearsome than the Panther.
      The Tigers were feared for a reason. No tank of WW2 was invincible but the Tigers were the closest to it and they had an overall 12:1 knock out ratio. By far the highest of any tank in WW2.
      During Operation Totalize in Normandy in August 1944, the Tiger I had a 10:1 knock out ratio against the Sherman, and that included Fireflies. In that operation 6 Tigers were lost vs over 60 Shermans lost to Tigers.

    "Sauerkraut" is fermented cabbage, similar to kimchi, except that "Sauerkraut" usually tastes a little more sour (hence the name sour cabbage!) and kimchi is usually spicier.
    And no, we don't put "Sauerkraut" on any "Hot Dogs", that's a typical American thing!
    We usually eat "Sauerkraut" warm as a side dish with other things, e.g. with smoked pork.

    Sauerkraut is a German pickled cabbage. The Allies called the Germans "Krauts" as an ethnic slur. In a convoy of tanks, the worst positions are, being the first tank leading the convoy, and the last tank in line. The enemy would wait until a convoy is in a ravine, or canyon, or any place where the only way out is forward or backward. Once in that position, the enemy would shoot to disable the first tank and the last tank simultaneously. This would prevent the rest of the convoy from being able to move in any direction. They could then pick-off the rest of the convoy more easily.

    40:15 Unfortunately, this scene is highly criticized because there wasn't much realism to it. The German Tiger Tank was a beast and far superior to the normal Sherman. The British developed the Sherman Firefly and the Americans the M4A1 (and M4A2 and better) with a 76mm cannon capable of penetrating German tanks like the Tiger at 500m range. (like the Fury in the movie!)
    The problem in the scene is that a German Tiger would never get closer to a Sherman, there the 88 cannon that was installed in the Tiger could still do extreme damage to a Sherman at 1-2 km (about 0.6 to 1.2 miles) away, as seen in the first tank hit. Therefore, a German tank like a Tiger would always stay at a distance and not expose itself to the risk of being hit from behind, where its greatest weakness was.
    Many argue that an inexperienced tank crew would have driven closer. But the Tiger tanks were usually manned by the best tank crews the German army had. If only because the Tiger could not be produced in large numbers.
    52:00 This scene was also extremely unrealistic! The soldiers wouldn't have stopped in front of the tank or run into it. They would have used their bazookas, of which they had enough, as you could see, to completely dismantle the tank. Unfortunately, Germans are always portrayed as "morons" in such films.

    He didn't die in the war though, he lived but lost his leg.. lives for decades..
    The Fat Electrician just uploaded a great video about him today, the day I'm typing this 👍

    The Kids reaction to the concussion of battle was real. At the local gun range to take a beginners course, just to catch up. Two young asian girls after class under instructors care were trying their first shots.One broke down immediately even with ear protection. and not firing a shot down range. Instructor had seen it before, walked her trough it gently.

    1:45 The Civil War did get this nasty actually. The Civil War's rate of death, its incidence in comparison with the size of the American population, was six times that of World War II. If a war happened on U.S. soil with that rate of death again, it would mean 6 million fatalities. The Confederacy had no minimum age, with kids ending up as drummers, buglers or fifers but make no mistake those kids were absolutely marching into musket fire right alongside the adults. In fact they were targets because a unit's musicians were specifically there to communicate orders.
    And of course there were the cities that were razed to the ground during that war.

    Fury would have been the first tank the tiger shot as it had the bigger gun. Shermans typically had a 75mm but there were some that had a 76mm which posed a threat to the German tanks. Also the tiger would have most likely stayed in the smoke as to not reveal itself and keep the upperhand on them. Fury is prolly one of my fav films and its nice to see what other people think about it

    To answer your questions about why War Daddy was staying. The original group, a squadron of M4a3s, were _suppose_ to hold that route from that enemy battalion. They mentioned that if the nazis got through, it would be a slaughter because they would waltz right into a large logistics unit. They specifically mention cooks but this would, presumably, also include people like the news writer Norman was at the beginning. They couldn't afford to abandon that position and let them through. That's why War Daddy said he was gonna stay and fight.

    "What are they shooting them with?" [Context, exploding tank; flying turret; fire]
    It could be a shell with a bursting charge, (Panzergranate 39) or a sub-caliber solid shot, (Panzergranate 40). Regardless, what's happening is that the ammunition inside the tank is getting cooked off by the incoming round. Even if it's just a solid shot, it's going to be extremely hot from tearing through the armor and the combination of heat and pressure, from impacting the ammunition, results in a rapid chain reaction that ranges from an ammunition burn off, (potentially slow enough to allow the crew to escape), to an outright explosion that can send the turret flying and split the armor at the welds. This has been a long term problem with tank safety and continues to exist to this day, although some countries are regularly experimenting with ways to protect their crews from their own ammunition.

    The Army was good at repairing Sherman tanks. They'd weld steel plates over the holes, fix everything broken, clean out the blood -- all in about 1-3 days. Then they'd scrape together a new crew -- mostly with little or no training in tanks -- and send them out again. Mostly to be killed in a few days. Then they'd haul their tanks back and wash-rinse-repeat. The Germans couldn't come close to keeping pace with this.
    When a GI asked a captured German officer why he'd been defeated, he replied: "We ran out of ammunition. You didn't run out of tanks."

    The end of Fury is loosely inspired by something that America’s most-decorated WW2 hero did. Audie Murphy single-handedly fought off a German company, using the machine gun of a burning, abandoned U.S. tank destroyer (which is like a tank with no roof). He killed 50+ Germans until they retreated, and for that he received the Medal of Honor. That was one of many incredibly heroic things he did, before and after that day. He’s credited with killing 241 German soldiers himself. He played himself in a movie about his life called To Hell And Back

    why are the bullets red/green like in star wars well,
    1. It helps the audience see what is going on. Nothing kills a movie more than people getting frustrated by trying to figure out what is supposed to be going on.
    2. It's accurate. Tracer rounds serve three purposes in combat. First, it helps the fire better adjust the weapon's aim for further shots. In fact, one of my frustrations is that navy combat movies always have plain water spouts when, historically, the warships of both world wars used colored dyes on their shots for the same reason. Second, it also is intimidating as hell to see small fireballs coming at you. I know this one personally. And third, it increases the chances of causing fires that can destroy ground cover, light fuel and ammo into an explosion, or do further damage to people so wounded.

    This is my first time watching your reaction. I’m glad he understands this movie so much and the mentality behind the tactics and what’s happening. It was terrible and a terrible time in history, even men trying to be men of principles. You’re exactly right that both sides felt the same thing about the other side, and that’s always how it is in war. It’s so ugly. The tracers are markers for the target of where to focus fire and helps you know where you’re shooting, especially with MG’s, but it’s also a more or less straight line to your location and a target indicator. It’s so terrible and there’s always consequences. I really appreciate the realism of this reactions and nobody is clean. GREAT reaction, and I’m sorry if I have later comments but I’m commenting in the middle of your reactions.

    American tanks were inferior in part because we had to make them portable. We had to transport them clear across the Atlantic Ocean to fight the Germans in North Africa and Europe, and we had to transport them all across the vast Pacific Ocean to fight the Japanese. The need to transport our tanks via ship across huge distances imposed size and weight limits on American tanks, whereas there were no such limitations on German and Russian tanks. They were therefore free to build larger, heavily armored main battle tanks with bigger, more powerful main guns then the USA as a result. The tradeoff was that American tanks were easier to manufacture and could be mass produced, which allowed the U.S. to win tank battles by outnumbering the opponents.

    15:18 - regarding them being out of the tank. It is called the "Open hatch" Philosophy meaning the tank crews (mostly the tank commander) would open their hatches and stick their head slightly outside to give them better vision than when they are inside the tanks using the vision slits, meaning they have better situational awareness. They will close the hatch if under fire by artillery or whenever they think their head is gonna get hit cleaned off. The British, American, and German tank crews subscribed to this logic during WWII. The US and most militaries would train with the "Open hatch" and "Close Hatch" philosophies to this day although I only have surface-level information from the top of my head from a "The Chieftain" YT video about this, and I am just a civvie that likes tanks. I'm guessing the guy manning the M2 Machine gun that is standing outside on top of the tank is one of the accompanying Infantry.
    15:40 - the Gun is a Pak-40 75mm anti-tank gun
    22:10 - American bomber formation otw to bomb something in Germany
    40:49 - This is one of the best in cinema of tank combat I can't deny that. But Fury is supposed to be a Sherman M4A2 with a long 76mm gun, if they had an HVAP round in the tank they could probably penetrate the tiger's front plate which is just 110mm. HVAP could pen it. If no HVAP then the tiger's side armor (60mm in thickness) can be easily penned by any armor-piercing round fired from a 76 no longer needing to flank the tiger from behind. Either way, it is still a great scene.
