Sweaters are also known as jumpers in Great Britain and they are a casual wardrobe staple that is wonderful during the colder seasons of the year. They can be made of many materials such as cashmere, wool, cotton, alpaca, or blends thereof. Overall, you want something that does not pill, that lasts you for quite a while that is soft on the skin, that keeps you warm, without making you sweat unnecessarily. You want it to fit properly in the shoulders, in terms of shoulder width, you want the sleeve lengths to be exactly the length you want, and it should not be too baggy around your midsection or too tight around your bum.
So how did sweaters come to exist?
If you go back in history and look at the 15th century, you can see that fishermen from the island of Guernsey wore these kinds of garments for the first time. They were made of a tightly spun knit wool because that's what they had available and it had to last and keep the fishermen warm and protected even in the roughest of seas. Eventually, fishermen from outside of Guernsey picked it up and they called them gansey. Once the gansey had been adopted by the Royal British navy in the 19th century, later on, there was also the fair isle sweater, again, named after geographical location and it became really popular in 1921 when the Prince of Wales famously wore it and had a portrait painted of himself.
SWEATER STYLES
First up is the crew neck style which is the original fisherman style. It means, it sits very close to your neck and protects you from the elements and it's round.
Another style that is less popular but I personally like a lot is the shawl collar style. It's called that way because it's round.
A not so well known sweater is the command or wooly pully which is a very tight fitting crew neck sweater with epaulets. It evokes some military resemblance.
SWEATER MATERIALS
One of the most popular materials and one of the most expensive ones is cashmere because it's soft.
A very underrated material for sweaters is alpaca. It comes from a Peruvian mountain animals and is extremely soft, almost as soft as cashmere, at the same time, it is more insulating.
The most traditional sweater material is definitely wool. As I mentioned before, the first fishermen used wool to make their sweaters.
SWEATER FIT
First of all, you want the bottom of the sweater to cover the hem at least by a little bit. If you have high waisted trousers, you can have a shorter hem, but you can also have a longer hem.
The next element to look at is your shoulder seam. Sometimes, sweaters are way too big or way too small but the end of the seam should always sit on your shoulder bone. In terms of sleeve length, you ideally want the sweater to end at the base of your hand.
Just like with the regular suit or jacket, you want your armholes of your sweaters to be rather small and tight.
Do's and Don'ts of men's sweaters
-Do store sweaters neatly folded rather than hanging.
-Do minimize the number of dry cleanings and washings of your sweater.
-Do wash your sweaters according to instruction label and make sure you take a look at it before you buy it.
-Don't automatically reject an itchy sweater.
-In my opinion, don't wear zip sweaters unless you are in a very casual environment and you really like them. Go with toggles or buttons, they always look superior.
-Don't pull or clip loose threads on your sweater because that may lead to it coming undone completely.
-Don't wear a visible t-shirt underneath your sweater because it looks rather cheap.
-Don't wear sweaters with French of double cuffs because they are simply not made for that.
-Don't toss a pilling sweater.

I'm drooling over that Ralph Lauren bottle-green sweater, and that yellow V-neck stripe is just a nice touch.
do you know where I can purchase one?]
@@j_0683 Ralph Lauren Polo has /had a blue with green/ yellow stripese for sale Last year.
Just search Ralph Lauren Tennis/ Cricket or Cable Knit Jumper on ebay- youll find good deals and maybe even vintage pieces
I think sweaters are completely underrated. They can bring a warm, yet masculine and rugged look. Plus depending on the martial they can be hard working and out door functional, or with the right shirt pairing, dressy enough for a nice party. Thanks for the video!
Agreed. Like we said, if done right, it can really be an invaluable item in a gentleman's wardrobe.
Thanks for the lesson; I had sweaters in my cloth collection which I had not worn for a long long time; but after listening to you, I put on a sweater daily. Thanks for the information.
All of the sweaters covered in this video were very flattering to GG’s “silhoutte”. It never ceases to amaze me how he could pull off such diverse types of sweaters so effortlessly! If only I could unsee those sweaters now
This channel is soooooooo underrated. People my age probably want to look like Kanye rather than look like the Kennedy's.
How about looking like Cary Grant or Fred Astaire? The Kennedy clan in their heyday were already past the great age of style--and we're light years past it.
Yall are so pretentious
You can scratch out Kanye now
Because Kanye has swagger.
@@willfakaroni5808 wait, why.
I always love the historical elements that you provide for the videos, you are often one of the references I look to when I'm doing my research. I appreciate your thoughts on the zip sweaters and agree it has a certain informality to it. Yet I've found it adds some panache to a casual suiting. I will definitely have to look for "mock" neck cardigans as well. Thank you for all information you provide. PS. Loved the work out moves to show the mobility of the sweater :)
Thank you! Glad to know :)
our energy and gas prices in the netherlands had gone up crazy so i was planning on keeping the heating off in my house and invest in some quality lambswool cardigans & fair isle sweaters!
I recommend Guernsey Woolens.
I have about 9.
A great Guernsey based company, about £90 and the sections are hand stitched together.
I also lanolise mine every few years.
They are very smart with lots of unique traits.
A decent jumper is essential, I usually have a rugby shirt underneath.
Great video! It raised my knowledge of sweaters. Plus added my style IQ overall.
Great video! I have been slowly building my sweater collection over the past year and am looking forward to wearing them in the coming months. I have multiple v necks, a couple crewnecks, and a military one. I think i could use a nice toggle sweater, that will be good for my age. Too young for a cardigan.
I do have a couple 1/4 zip sweaters. I like to layer them with an oxford shirt and a quilted jacket or vest. I agree it is very informal which limits how often i can wear it.
There was a chill in the air this morning so this video is timely! I have all my jackets tailored so that I can wear a light merino sweater underneath. When it gets really cold or when a jacket isn't needed I wear a submariner sweater (despite being only 35km from the Aran Islands I wouldn't wear an Aran sweater because it just screams 'American tourist'.
That collar is jumping all over the place!
I know it's kind of off topic but do anyone know a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Elliott Brendan i would suggest Flixzone. You can find it by googling =)

A sweater guide, now this is more like it
Love all the content you guys do a great job! The video seems speed up and just off though and I checked my video settings and didn't see if i had anything different than usual. Wasn't sure if I was the only one just thought I'd bring it up if no one else noticed.
I'm mainly watching this for my school uniform, pretty helpful since I use a v-neck for it
I highly prefer simple 100% Cotton Crew Neck Sweaters. They are very affordable, durable and I never overheat in them. One downside may be that they loose their color a bit.
Nice cricket jumper... nowadays never worn with a tie in the UK. Thanks for your interesting content.
Oh
And the classic His Majesties Submarines polar neck too.
Cream and navy blue.
Perfect for cold night and great with a duffle coat.
Great video. Gave me some ideas with fall coming up. Thank you
Love love love the boots!!!
Uniqlo has really nice sweater that aren't really expensive.
Nah. Never had a good piece of uniqlo clothing. They're like the middle ground of budget clothing. Go for j crew instead
I just got some for 2000 yen. I swear if they wear out ill never buy knits again
Brenire do some lovely six ply shooting jumpers, and were the private supplier to my lovely old cavalry regiment.
Brunswick Green for us.
Never use strong detergent.
I find a baby shampoo then a lanolin if needed is perfect.
I also test the temperature with a thermometer and never pull hang or stretch wet wool.
Store away airtight if at all possible.
I am senior in high school and we are having a yearbook photo day in a week. I was planing to wear v neck sweater and a tie. Got any advices for me ?
I’m curious as to how it went
where did your tennis jumpers come from? I really love that green and yellow one.
What are the guide lines for removing my shoes when I visit someone's house? For example if they have rich carpets. How do I dress sharp, but not have my shoes on?
Excellent information on getting a great fitting sweater and how to care for it as well as the "do's and don't's of proper wearing and accessorizing a sweater just one thing I think you have mention avoid at all cost buying the horrendous sweaters that Heathcliff Hutuxable use to wear thanks for the helpful suggestions.
Lol you didn't like Heathcliff's sweaters lol they were at least always memorable lol. But they definitely will miss some of the "classic" staying power of a cable knit or fair isle sweater.
Yeah memorable right because for me it was hard sometimes just looking at those sweaters!!!
Lol
Heathcliff's sweaters were all custom made by someone that Bill Cosby knew personally that lived in Brooklyn, NY. The guy was a custom seamstress and designer of fine custom made sweaters. Most of his designs were loud but he also created masterpieces.
Great guide!
The chinos near the end look almost white to me. As it is not completely white, and more of a beige, does this make them acceptable for Autumn? Thanks.
Hi Raphael,
I was wondering, is there a Lady's Gazette or a similar channel for women?
Thanks,
Richard Queso
Make a video on the Zoot Suit !
Wow nice video and thank you for sharing useful tips with us.
Raphael could you please let know what sweater that is your wearing with the shawl collar is it a orange tan purple windowpane I love it whatever it is brand style of print
Hi dude, how's going? I hope fine, well I discovered your blog accidentally searching a trench coat to buy, and there you said about pre-1999 Burberry's be more classic and a real deal for a very good price. Then I would like to talk better with you about it where buy and this kind of stuff. If you're able to help me please, it will be a pleasure for me! Thank you, great videos and advises.
As a cricket player, I love the sweater when playing but also enjoy wearing other sweaters casually!
Play it at .75 speed and it sounds normal
A good quality sweater is such an expensive item where I live... but i will make do, specially with this information. Thanks for the video Raphael.
César Andrade I think there is still a big sale on Ralph Lauren, with great saving on sweaters.
I would lova an is it worth it episode about the classic "simplest knit" by Maison Margiela it seems very high quality, but sets you back from about 300 up to 700 €
What colors should I get for my first nice sweater?
Navy, Charcoal/ Grey,
or earth tones like Brown, or green?
Do a video on cardigans! Please
I have purchased a vintage Ralph Lauren Cricket cable knit sweater. I love it however it is quite chunky, are they all suppose to be this thick? I was looking forward to wearing mine with a jacket, but I may have to wear this one without one.
what do you think about the brand brunello cucinelli
If you wear a v neck sweater with a jacket what should you do about your shirt cuff? Show the shirt cuff?, show the sweater cuff?, no cuff at all? Thanks
Excellent content. As I age I really like men in various sweaters. For an American female, this is somewhat of a big deal.
Can a gentleman wear a nicer polo (like a Brooks Brothers pique polo, for example) under a crew neck sweater, or would that be a faux pas?
I Lovvveeee Sweater Vest
How about cotton sweaters? The ones I have seem more sturdy. Are they a replacement material for wool and should be skipped over, or do they just have a different use?
Jakub Anderwald cotton sweaters are just as good as wool sweaters in my opinion but they have different purposes. A cotton sweater is perfect for spring and summer due to that cotton do not insulate as well as wool.
Also wool comes from animals and cotton comes from plants so if you live a vegan lifestyle I think cotton is the way to go (I don’t know much about this specific subject and how vegans resonate about this so don’t take my word for it).
Hello Quick question, I do not know whether to go for a Plain V neck sweater with no logos on it, or decide on going for a V neck sweater with a Ralph Lauren logo stitched on it. I understand the differences are minimal but what do you think is better?
I think it depends on the quality of the sweater. Buy whichever one is higher quality I wouldnt recommend a massive logo but a small logo like the one on the bottle green sweater sven is wearing is understated and still elegant.
what do you think about a tan v-neck sweater with a button down underneath for business casual?
I wanted to ask since I bought some sweaters again due to moths...
The question is, is it okay that I bought my sweaters in 2 XL? I think they were trying to put a fast one on my and my folks.
Was that shady sales practice from Men's Warehouse or no? Wool and cashmere doe shrink.
Weird seeing a video on sweaters when here in socal it's over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
Where did you get the cardigan at 4:42?
Nice video. The turn ups on your trousers are the widest I've seen, what was the inspiration for those?
Those V-necks and Tennis jumpers make you look like a 1920s cricket player, very nice
What kind of pants would you recommend with navy blue and a gray v neck sweater?
I love that Ralph Lauren v neck, where'd you get it
Ironically enough, the least stylish sweaters are the most popular...the hoodie and the college sweater
Hoodies are poison.
How do you suggest you dry sweaters? In the drying machine on what setting? Or on a drying rack, and if so how would you place/lay it on the rack ?
Kelly Fagan NEVER EVER dry your sweater in a drying machine. Do always airdry sweaters and you can roll them up in a towels. When they have lost almost all weight from the water you can hang them up for a shirt while so the last moisture gets out from the sweater.
what's the sweater at 9:18 ? it looks so good
Russian sweater
Personally i have my own look but i like to watch these video to maybe grab a tip or two usually it will create an idea for me with my own twist. but then i look at top designers like RL, Hermes, LV etc... and they pretty much do the complete opposite. So the conclusion i came to and what makes my style so great is you do whatever you want to do. But in a neat way, there are no rules. Unless your talking dinner & wedding parties
Where can i get a ring like the one he has in this video?
Awesome vid with great info, love the Ralph Lauren sweater your rocking, green is my favorite color. Be Safe;-).
Wool is unique; it still keeps you warm if it gets wet.
What’s up with the playback speed?
I have a shirt and tie just like that
Nice shirt
I'm 100% pro zipper sweater.
Mr Rogers 4 Life.
Can you wear a Sweater with a shirt and cufflinks underneath?
Button cuff shirt is better, cufflinks tend to be a bit bulky under a sweater sleeve and looks weird and lumpy.
What do you think about a tie/crueneck combination and wearing the tie outside. I find that very pleasing to the eye. (maybe +a sportsjacket)
Isn't it true that washing a sweater inside out will help to eliminate pilling?
No
would it be weird to wear a sweater or sweater vest with a 3 piece suit?
More than you think.
Perfect. End to your video. Keep reviewing your outfits. ☺☺☺
Oh my how I have been waiting for this video to show up in my youtube feed and you did a really good job on being informative about history, material and different styles of sweaters. I'm not fond of wearing a tie with a crewneck and I think it just awkward.
By the way where did you buy your tennis sweaters Raphael? I'm a big fan of your bottlegreen sweater!
I think some zipper jumpers look great.
is the video sped up?
U r great man
Roll necks are the best!
Cardigan man I am with shirt
Try on .75 speed, sounds great!
This video are for my grandparents
Can you wear a Polo shirt with a sweater?
Very good video,
Grüße aus Österreich:)
Fishermen did not make their sweaters -- their wives and mothers did. In Ireland weave patterns were unique so that if a man was lost at sea his body, if recovered, could be identified by his sweater.
1:05 You look depressed.
I always end up looking like Alan Partridge.
Why is the video sped up?
I feel like I'm watching the micro machine man of style.
Very sad his shirt was unbuttoned too far and you could see his chest.
9:21 хаха, неожиданно!
Insightful, but you need to turn up the volume on your videos...please!
What's wrong with zipper
I am going to finish watching on a later date because it's 107 outside lol
In my view, tailored garments are more comfortable than the sweaters.
I hate any sweater made with wool, because there itchy..I like Chanelle Sweaters the best because they don't itch, and they look nice .
Is it just me, or does the video seem a bit sped up?
Not a fan of wool, especially next to my skin.
Psychobillys we love a good n cool sweater
Hi Raphael. I want to ask you 2 things.
1) Lots of the sweaters you wore during this video, look like they are too large on the shoulders, aren't they?
2) Talking about cufflinks. If I see the pic of Daniel Craig here it.pinterest.com/pin/508203139193157720/) I think he looks very nice with the cufflinks under the sweater. What do you think?
StylEd Men I haven't seen the whole video so I don't know if Raphael mentioned it yet but French cuff shirts will bunch up under a jumper.
there are also other pics of other events of D.Craig, like this pinterest.com/pin/508203139193158825/ , wearing different trousers, shoes etc.. but always with cufflinks and sweater
mxt mxt that's the beauty of the relativity. For me he rocks :D
God save Turtlenecks
I always print my sweaters that makes them special and girls notice me.
Talking about style when his shirt collar is all over the place
Why are you whispering?
