Gotta say Aran sweater market is where it’s at. A large array of styles and colors. My favorite is the hoodie style. All of them are comfortable and good looking. Highly recommend checking them out if your looking for a fisherman sweater.
@@CarlMurawski Thank you, and thanks for asking. I have 2 that surprisingly still fit. On examination, neither is a true Fisherman, although both have the pattern. One has a V-neck, and the other has a weird collar. She thought she was knitting a shawl collar but it turned out to be a flap on the back closer to a sailor's shirt. That one also has a full-length front zipper with a great story. No stores carried the length needed, so instead of trying to turn it into a pull-over or buttons, she called Talon to ask if they had that length. When they found out why she wanted it, they cut it to length and sent it with their compliments!
They're also called Ganseys. I did an internship with a company that gets them hand-knitted (Wayside Flower in Bridlington, if you're interested). They're also knitted, not woven. ;) Thank you for making this video. Your enthusiasm and appreciation for these cultural and historic garments is as beautiful as the things themselves 🥰
Its 8F right now and I bought my Marino wool sweater handmade from Russia. Its the most expensive piece of clothing I've ever bought but my god is it worth it.
Very quickly once you start looking at these, even a novice like me can see & feel the difference between the machine knit sweaters & the real handknitted sweaters. The difference is immediately recognizable - the handknits are chunkier, and often use the finest yarns. It's worth talking with Ann at O'Máille in Galway. She knows each of her Aran craftswomen by name, and she's really great with style too. I'm short (5'7"), and I like a sportier cut than the traditional over-the-butt drape of the typical fisherman's sweater. Ann had one of her women knit me a custom sweater in genuine charcoal Donegal yarn (the natural color of a black sheep). I chose the stitches I liked, the collar and cuff styles too. It is the chunkiest sweater I have ever seen anywhere, and I will treasure it for life. And the price was less than I expected to pay for an off-the-shelf sweater, based on my research before visiting Ireland.
I'm looking for an Aran sweater right now. I also think more recently Chris Evans in Knives Out got some buzz fashion wise for another recent cultural occurrence.
the celtic store in philedelphia has aran name brand imported from the aran islands they ship free right here in the usa. $89 bucks right now in 2021. jj just google the name celtic clothing it will pop right up.
As a hand knitter, loved the video! One note is that patterns on guernsey sweaters are of knits and purls usually and as you mentioned more tightly knit with thinner yarn whereas aran sweaters are made with cable and honeycomb stitches with slightly thicker yarn!

I bought my father a 3 button fisherman pullover sweater for Christmas and since that I've felt the need to grab myself a fisherman sweater. My father had the same Brooks Brother's cable knit sweater for longer than I've been alive so it's something that he definitely holds dear to him.
Great video Carl. Thanks. I have a handed-down (family heirloom) Aran Sweater, made in 1965. It is one of my favourite garments. The front and back panels are mirror images of each other, knitted separately then stitched together. I believe the idea is that when the front wears out (it is a working mans sweater) then you turn it around and have the unworn back as the new front, thereby doubling its life span. Over 50years old and still has its ivory colour, the elastic and thermoregulation qualities of the wool.
Love this, brother. Now I have to dig out my ivory one. My ancestors are from Norway and Denmark, so I need an ancestral-appropriate fishermen’s sweater...
My mother made me one really really chunky when i was a kid some 15 years ago. It was way to big then but it still fits me now, and I look forward every year to the cold winter days when i can wear it. Great video as always and you really pumped up the production quality. Cheers.
Nice one Carl wool jumpers are the way forward in the winter! A great brand over here is Aran Crafts. I have 5 jumpers in normal wool and merino combos from them and recommend. But your cant go wrong with any hand made wool garment from Ireland or Scotland
One day at 13 I complained to my grandmother I had no warm clothes to wear. It being coastal SWFL, we never had a demand for warm clothes like other states needed. But that seabreeze on a cold front would always cut through my cheap store bought jackets like a knife. One afternoon she got out the knitting equipment. Her mothers family were Irish/Welsh fishermen and sheep farmers, her father's family were Norwegian fishermen turned pig farmers. A chance meeting in Georgia lead to her and her sister. My grandmother was an amazing seamstress, making dresses and stuff. I never knew she could knit. Week after week that Fall I kept asking what she was making. She would give me a look over her good eye (she had a stroke after being struck by lightening as a child. One eye was always half shut) saying it was a special surprise. This woman made me my baby blanket, some of my clothes, hats, socks and when I was younger dresses. First day of cold, the temp drops to around 60 F but that sharp seabreeze gets me every time. It was the weekend, me and my friends were going to go attempt fishing and riding our bikes. Just as Im about to set off with my cheap jacket, she calls me over. Hands me a box and tells me its a gift I can use right now. It was speckled grey with several shades, touch of blue, brown, pink, red and orange patterns. She made the design look close to my "Indian print" saddle blanket. Close to the Irish style but you can tell she mightve done some of it by memory. That was the last thing she ever made for me. I cherished that sweater for years and do still have it. She told me that her mother had taught her how to make it, but used to tell me her grandmothers always had something to say on what should be what! Ive since moved north to Indiana now and made one by myself. It took me around 4-5 months go make with my inexperience. Edit: So to let you know. My mother still has it in storage. I am 26 now!

I just spent part of the late morning doing livestock chores in +3F temps. I have some decent winter work wear but I'd have been happy to have had one of these sweaters on.
My girlfriend bought me one for my birthday last year and it is legitimately the most comfortable garment I own. Because of the loose knit idk if I'd wear it to work personally, but it's awesome to throw on casually on a cold day. Looks great with jeans and boots 👌.

I've got a couple of Irish made and some Scottish made, too. I'm holding, in my hand right now, a vintage, Aran Crafts Ireland, 100% Merino Wool button up cardigan-style sweater. It's a light lavender color with all the fancy cable stitches and the like. Has embroidered, purple and green flowers on the collar and front, chore coat style pockets. It's a beautiful piece, probably late 80s to early 90s. I've got some experience/history with crochet, so I am always fascinated by this type of knitted wool garments. I've made hats and sold them in the past (sold one to a high school buddy and he wore it while he was deployed in Afghanistan) but am working on evolving what I've been doing for 14 years into the next level. Hand crochet made garments, hats, gloves, sweaters and more...made to last, designed for functionality.
My mom had a hand knitted one from Ireland that she loved (and I hated). 20 yrs later and I can appreciate that it is a quality, timeless thing and well worth the money

My gran's a great knitter and I have multiple fishermen's sweaters handmade by her. They're great sweaters and whenever I wear them I feel grateful that she put so much time and love into them. I would happily pay her for them but she refuses hahaha
excellent review of the sweaters. I've got 5 wool sweaters, all from Irish, Scottish , and a few miliary surplus, German. Swedish. all heavy. very warm and in harsh environments, the best thing to have on your back, better than a jacket for breathability and comfort.

Dude as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned so much about how to learn your personal style and also about buying less in order to essentially have more to wear. I always thought that my style was sort of eccentric and beachy but as I’ve aged I’ve paid attention to the fact that I always seem to gravitate to comfort and what I’ve now learned is a more Americana comfort meets workwear style and I’m incredibly grateful to have run across your channel. Yours is my favorite by far and although I can’t always afford the pieces I’ve developed a mindset that is now focused on substance and quality within the parameters of my budget. Love sweaters. I have an ivory cable knit sweater handmade in the Republic of Ireland. I also have a Canadian made, of British wool, in rib knit with roll down collar, in dark navy colour. Both are very heavy. A British knit is a tight weave with a more plai texture compared to the highly patterned cable knit.
I love my fisherman’s sweater, it’s not something I wear off the job but it sees lots of wear in the winters doing bridge work on the railway in canada. Nothing beats a fisherman’s sweater with a pair of overalls in the winter!
I live in the celtic region of Cornwall (Kernow) in Southwest of England and frequently wear a black and fairly plain stitched ‘fisherman’s jumper/sweater’ (no turtle neck). As you say, a heavily versatile jumper, and though it’s warm, I also find mine breathes really easily so is perfect for those not too hot spring/summer evenings outside, especially if there’s a bit of wind. It’s also excellent for layering up for what you guys would refer to as ‘yard work’. I usually layer up with a Dickies Portland or my peter storm anorak if I’m out in the woods or on a beach walk with my family. Great video as always, Carl, please do keep them coming!
My dad found a vintage one in a consignment shop a few years ago, he hardly wore it and finally saw it fit to pass it to me, it’s definitely my favorite sweater and it gets at least one compliment every time I wear it
I bought a Peregrine Hudson Aran fisherman sweater yesterday at the Goodwill bins for $3.74. It retails for £125. It's made in England and Peregrine has been making clothes since 1796. Looking forward to wearing it in the colder months.
Best thing over your kilt in cool weather! My first Scottish fisherman's sweater was a hand-me-down after my oldest brother put his in the dryer. That really tightened the weave. It looked great and was bullet proof!
For your adds to make them more seamless you could have one character talk in the frame showing the other character. The youtube Movie Pitch meetings does this and it feels like a conversation between two people.
Great piece. I live in Cornwall ( Britain ) where we also have a long tradition of fisherman’s jumpers. Im lucky enough to have hand knitted jumpers made by my mum and grandmother and wear jumpers at work and out and about in all weathers! Cheers

I think the fisherman sweater is a classic and ageless piece of fashion. I am wearing a 'cheaper' one watching this now. Love the fisherman/lighthouse keeper look and hope to add couple more quality sweaters to my collection. One of the most versatile pieces of clothing in any wardrobe that goes alongside things like the white polo, khaki/olive chinos and white tennis shoe
I got a merino wool turtleneck in an oatmeal color from Aran for Christmas and I love it! Kept me warm on a 5-6 mile hike in sub 30 and works equally well with a sport jacket and some boots. I enjoyed it so much i bought another one of their donegal ones in a dark green. Also, appreciate the effort you’re putting into the ads.
I just bought that exact same model sweater from the Aran Sweater Market in gray. I like it but I must admit I wish it was a more relaxed cut. I love to layer underneath my sweaters and I like doing it with a nice flannel shirt. It works but a little constricting in the shoulders. I think I might look into the rag wool roll neck sweater. That one looks really awesome!!
My gf got me a fisherman sweater from duluth for Christmas. It's great, warm enough to wear in the winter with a light jacket even in michigan. 100% Shetland wool so is itchy but function is more important to me, just suck it up buttercup. Love the look and function. Nice video as always 👍

Vermont country store sells a Men's Hillwalker Crewneck Irish Wool Sweater, it's not cable stitched, but it's a ridiculously tough fisherman-ing sweater
I have two from Aran sweater market. They’re insanely warm. I usually will wear it without a coat in weather 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If the weather is around 20 degrees or below I’ll put a coat over top.
I've always been drawn to fisherman's sweater and actually thrifted a Jeep brand fisherman sweater. Surprisingly it quite nice and it's made from 100% pure virgin wool. I have had my eye on getting another one and really like the offering from Mister Freedom in indigo
I love such garments! and have always used them since childhood, since they were the traditional clothing everyone used in the wild islands of Western Patagonia where I grew up. Too bad that as I moved to Australia and Europe I did not bring them with me! I do own some local produce which is quite good (Scotland) and my intention is to at least add an Icelandic and an Irish piece (some of my ancestors made them in Kerry long ago) to my collection. My old Royal Navy sweater disappeared log long ago, I still remember ist peculiar smell, pure lanolin! Exactly that is what I want, rugged, thick, sheepy!
You should most definitely check out norlender knitwear. Made in Norway, using wool from ancient breeds of Norwegian sheep. Truly excellent craftsmanship in the products and design.

Dude as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned so much about how to learn your personal style and also about buying less in order to essentially have more to wear. I always thought that my style was sort of eccentric and beachy but as I’ve aged I’ve paid attention to the fact that I always seem to gravitate to comfort and what I’ve now learned is a more Americana comfort meets workwear style and I’m incredibly grateful to have run across your channel. Yours is my favorite by far and although I can’t always afford the pieces I’ve developed a mindset that is now focused on substance and quality within the parameters of my budget. With that said, thanks for continuing to educate us on all things “style” and much appreciation for all that goes in to each video. ✌🏽😎✌🏽 oh and I wish I could raid your closet😂😂😂😂😂
Love sweaters. I have an ivory cable knit sweater handmade in the Republic of Ireland. I also have a Canadian made, of British wool, in rib knit with roll down collar, in dark navy colour. Both are very heavy. A British knit is a tight weave with a more plai texture compared to the highly patterned cable knit.

I love my fisherman’s sweater, it’s not something I wear off the job but it sees lots of wear in the winters doing bridge work on the railway in canada. Nothing beats a fisherman’s sweater with a pair of overalls in the winter!

I live in the celtic region of Cornwall (Kernow) in Southwest of England and frequently wear a black and fairly plain stitched ‘fisherman’s jumper/sweater’ (no turtle neck). As you say, a heavily versatile jumper, and though it’s warm, I also find mine breathes really easily so is perfect for those not too hot spring/summer evenings outside, especially if there’s a bit of wind. It’s also excellent for layering up for what you guys would refer to as ‘yard work’. I usually layer up with a Dickies Portland or my peter storm anorak if I’m out in the woods or on a beach walk with my family. Great video as always, Carl, please do keep them coming!
My dad found a vintage one in a consignment shop a few years ago, he hardly wore it and finally saw it fit to pass it to me, it’s definitely my favorite sweater and it gets at least one compliment every time I wear it

I bought a Peregrine Hudson Aran fisherman sweater yesterday at the Goodwill bins for $3.74. It retails for £125. It's made in England and Peregrine has been making clothes since 1796. Looking forward to wearing it in the colder months.
Best thing over your kilt in cool weather! My first Scottish fisherman's sweater was a hand-me-down after my oldest brother put his in the dryer. That really tightened the weave. It looked great and was bullet proof!

Great piece. I live in Cornwall ( Britain ) where we also have a long tradition of fisherman’s jumpers. Im lucky enough to have hand knitted jumpers made by my mum and grandmother and wear jumpers at work and out and about in all weathers!

I think the fisherman sweater is a classic and ageless piece of fashion. I am wearing a 'cheaper' one watching this now. Love the fisherman/lighthouse keeper look and hope to add couple more quality sweaters to my collection. One of the most versatile pieces of clothing in any wardrobe that goes alongside things like the white polo, khaki/olive chinos and white tennis shoe
I got a merino wool turtleneck in an oatmeal color from Aran for Christmas and I love it! Kept me warm on a 5-6 mile hike in sub 30 and works equally well with a sport jacket and some boots. I enjoyed it so much i bought another one of their donegal ones in a dark green. Also, appreciate the effort you’re putting into the ads.

I just bought that exact same model sweater from the Aran Sweater Market in gray. I like it but I must admit I wish it was a more relaxed cut. I love to layer underneath my sweaters and I like doing it with a nice flannel shirt. It works but a little constricting in the shoulders. I think I might look into the rag wool roll neck sweater. That one looks really awesome!!

My gf got me a fisherman sweater from duluth for Christmas. It's great, warm enough to wear in the winter with a light jacket even in michigan. 100% Shetland wool so is itchy but function is more important to me, just suck it up buttercup. Love the look and function. Nice video as always 👍

Cable knit is a good word as well for these sweaters. Lattice or basket stitches symbolize the fisherman's basket and the wish for a big catch.
The Aran jumper is masculine as all outdoors. I'm wearing one in the Chicago winter. I get compliments all the time.

I have two from Aran sweater market. They’re insanely warm. I usually will wear it without a coat in weather 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If the weather is around 20 degrees or below I’ll put a coat over top.

I've always been drawn to fisherman's sweater and actually thrifted a Jeep brand fisherman sweater. Surprisingly it quite nice and it's made from 100% pure virgin wool. I have had my eye on getting another one and really like the offering from Mister Freedom in indigo

I love such garments! and have always used them since childhood, since they were the traditional clothing everyone used in the wild islands of Western Patagonia where I grew up. Too bad that as I moved to Australia and Europe I did not bring them with me! I do own some local produce which is quite good (Scotland) and my intention is to at least add an Icelandic and an Irish piece (some of my ancestors made them in Kerry long ago) to my collection. My old Royal Navy sweater disappeared log long ago, I still remember ist peculiar smell, pure lanolin! Exactly that is what I want, rugged, thick, sheepy!
