What is cashmere?
It is a super soft fiber which is the under hair from the cashmere goat and usually, a goat can only produce about 150 grams a year which is only about a third of a pound. It is the only defined under hair that has a very narrow diameter which makes the fiber very soft to the touch.
Cashmere is called that way because the goats traditionally lived in the Kashmir region in Asia. Today, you can find cashmere goats in other places such as Mongolia but you need to have a certain elevation which creates that fine under hair that is so prized.
Historically, cashmere was introduced to the US on a large scale in 1947 and up until the 70s when China passed some trade laws, it was a really rare commodity. Because it was so popular and fetched such high prices, more and more Shepherds decided to have cashmere goats. Now that had a substantial environmental impact. Goats are hurting animals and such, they move on, the problem is their hooves pull up the roots of the grass in nomadic desert areas in Central Asia and because of that, they're responsible for the expansion of the desert in those areas.
So what does it mean for you?
Ideally, you invest only in the highest quality cashmere because that will last the longest and therefore, you don't have to rebuy cashmere scarves every season thus impacting the desert
growth in Central Asia.
So what's the best quality cashmere?
One, it's from combed goats, from Mongolia or China. It's about 14 to 16 microns in diameter and 50 millimeters long which is about two inches. As I said, the higher the ply, the better.
So how can you buy quality cashmere?
Actually, I've always found it was extremely difficult to find out more information about cashmere especially when you shop online but also in stores. Sales clerks don't know what they're talking about and people just say "oh it's quality cashmere", most of the time you don't learn about the plys, you don't learn about the fibre length, they can't even tell you where it is sourced and as such, you should only buy cashmere from a retailer where you can return it after a while.
So what should you do and don't do when it comes to cashmere?
- First of all, don't be fooled by gauge numbers when it comes to cashmere, they don't matter.
- Do expect that a retailer should explain to you why their cashmere cost as much as it does.
-Don't buy cheap disposable cashmere that has to be renewed every season
- Do buy cashmere in timeless patterns and colors that you can wear from now and for years to come.
- Do consider the cost per wear for cashmere, especially if you plan to wear it for 20 years from now.
- Do buy cashmere products that best utilize the characteristics of material.
- Don't buy cashmere that is blended with polyester or nylon because usually it's a very low-quality cashmere and you'll regret your purchase soon thereafter.
How do you care for cashmere?
Unlike cotton, it is normally not machine washable and is a hand wash only item. I'd also try not to dry clean it if you can avoid it instead, you can get a baby shampoo and gently wash it by hand and then Pat it dry with a cotton towel and let it air dry gently, ideally on a hanger, unless it's a sweater, that should be dried flat.
Alternatively, you can also purchase low alkaline detergent which is perfect for cashmere. Once you wash cashmere and it's dried, it may feel a lot stiffer so you have to kind of crunch it and make it soft, maybe iron it, and steam it and wear it a little bit, and it will regain its original softness

This man is without a doubt the most well researched mens fashion vlogger. I don't much care for his personal style as it is way to traditional for my taste but he knows what he' talking about.
Funny enough, I was thinking the exact same thing. He definitely knows what he’s talking about and you gotta love him for that at least.
Yep I have a much more casual style but his archives of movies contains many gems of info
100%, his personal taste and advice is not to my liking for myself usually, but he is such a good source of knowledge due to the fact he knows so much
I figured out I'm allergic to cashmere after spending a few hundred dollars on sweaters and coats. Try them on first and pay attention to your nose. If after 15 mins, your nose starts dripping like a faucet, you may want to go with alpaca or merino wool instead.
Very important concern
Also, try Merino on bare skin first and see if it's too itchy ... my mistake
To reiterate previous sentiments, I also appreciate the fact that you folks appreciate the human and environmental impact of the cashmere trade. This is just one more reason why I trust your channel, and I support Fort Belvedere. Thank you, for looking at the world through a wide lens.
I liked how you explained the environmental impacts. Good stuff!
Honestly, Raphael, I love all the socially-aware views you have on clothing. You advice on buying good quality cashmere to help environmental factors in east Asia really shows how much you care for people and things generally, really sets you apart.
I have to tell you that your way of talking is perfect. Apart from the fact that you explain things thoroughly and with simple words, the tone of your voice is very calm and clear, showing that you are a man of class. Thank you for all the useful and important information about cashmere!
That deep red vest is just amazingly good looking. And it must pair so easily with so many jackets! That guy really knows how to put together outfits!
LOVE how he explains it. usually have a strong distaste for people who are full of themselves but he can be my best friend anytime
love this guy! he knows his fabrics and is a super style maven!
top quality fabrics explained from one of the best (and stylish) youtuber 😀
Wonderful detail in the video and I did not know much of it. Danke sehr Sven Raphael.
I am a seamstress and I've been looking into using Kashmir in some garments so I was looking for information on how to source quality Kashmir and I came across this video, it was very helpful and informative, and also this channel as a whole just seems so cute, I'll have to share it with my fiance, God knows he could use some of these tips
Sven, you should do a closet tour video where you show us how much you've accumulated over the years and show us your favorite pieces
We moved into a new place and the closet is currently being designed. Probably won't be finished until 2018, but I'll keep it in mind.
That would be Raphael 's greatest video. It would definitely be a download giant.
this is the best video i have watched about cashmere. It explained fully detailed, thank you it helps a lot
I love this topic! You should do a video series about all of the staple fabrics!
Thank you for the well rounded explanation of the pros and cons of cashmere!
Thanks for a very appreciated video certainly you have added to my knowledge of knowing the difference of quality cashmere and how to recognize this fine material I have in the past purchase what was considered a blend of cashmere and cotton or wool but now I'm armed with information that will help me to know what specifics to ask for excellent job on the subject of quality cashmere.
I've been planning to invest in a cashmere scarf to start out with. I needed this. Thank you Raphael!!! Also you've been a key mentor in helping me rejuvenate my wardrobe!!! You and alpha M have been very helpful

I'm very lucky to have Cashmere jumpers from the 1930 that are still very wearable and very soft keeping them clean is a horrible stress any advice on keeping them clean
Dafup? How'd they last almost a century?
@@jonathanng138 time travel my friend :D
Wear t-shirts underneath your sweaters. Air them out after wearing. Don't play touch football in cashmere clothing.
@@jonathanng138 that's wool for you. if you take good care of it a nice wool garment can last your entire life.
Nice vid! Quite shocking how much an impact the goats are making actually, all my cashmere is second hand and still looks great : ) you’re super stylish
Nice video. Looking to invest in a scarf for winter in the near future. I always wondered what cashmere was. Now i know thanks to this video
Top notch video! So thorough and informative!
Thank you!
Outstanding video touching upon just about every aspect of the wool. Would love more videos like this, perhaps on Saxxon wool or Harris tweed.

So well put together!
Very comprehensive video. Nice work!
Good video. Keep up the great the work you do.
You are a very different fashion youtuber compared to most others, your vids contain lots of extra info and history delicately edited in. That is something most people would'nt care for doing. You are for sure a quality youtuber. Now I have a question, I am a teenager from Norway (the country where everything is super expensive) and I am a pretty poor person. What are some ways I can look more formal and fashionable without spending so many benjamins, or maybe non at all.
+Bear Norman search for how to dress like a gentleman on a budget ;)
Wow i love this!! You are very knowledgeable
Wow! You are rare commodity. Very well informed & beautifully presented. I think you are very well dressed.
You guys are so helpful. Just got my cashmere cardigan in the mail today and I Always clean anything from China (long before 2020)

Brilliant video best Ive seen . Thank you . I’m just struggling to get stains out of 3 cashmere jumpers but I know how to wash it just got ingrained stains - any tips would be appreciated but I’ll see if you have any more videos on this as well . Ruth in UK
This video is gold!
Very informative, thanks!
pls add a video about silk garment. Thank you so much for the information.
Another Great video…I no longer buy cashmere jumpers as find they shrink after a few hand washes but have a few cashmere blankets from Ralph Lauren that are worth every penny.
Anybody wearing cashmere has taste! great video overall .... fine wool from a fine part of the world.
Thank you, Ive learned a lot
Great video dude
Awesome, educational tutorial (as always) ! Quick note: Any & all hand-wash sweaters should be done inside-out !
Thank you Sven,
Your advice matches what I have been hearing from the classy Hungarian lady I am with.
I'm starting to understand.

Expertly done, extremely informative Thank U…
Very nice and informative video as always! I wonder what you think about Suitsupply´s cashmere coats? Are they any good?
Outstanding video!🤗
hmm started at "how to break in motorcycle gloves" and ended up here. such is life.
Thank you very useful., some info you do not find easily
Very informative. Would you kindly do a video Naadam vs Npeal cashmere. I'm curious as to why the price difference. Thanks.
I am from Kashmir, where from it started. We made Kashmiri handmade products here too. They have more quality then made out side Kashmir
Excellent video.
Thank you very informative
very informative thank you
Mr. Schneider I was wondering what are your thoughts on pashmina and do you know any good suppliers? have a wonderful day.
Really good video. It is always a strange thing when we see more and more of what we see as a luxury item appearing at lower and lower prices. Instinctively you think something must surely be wrong, but often we do not have the specific knowledge about why.
Excellent comments. Thank you.
Super informative! Great video, even for a Lady. 😉
I bought a new cashmere sweater. It’s got pilling already after 1 day of wear (under arms, along entire friction area of torso and arms actually). But I was also kept warmer than even a one-sided fleece jacket (think hoodie with zipper). Should I try to wash it to get the shortest fibers out? Or is it a lost cause and just return it? It’s my first cashmere item. I can see the individual threads/knit, there’s visible light see-through. So not the densist knit. But it was also inexpensive (for cashmere), and I do like the cut.
I liked your video. But you forgot to mention the de-pillers. There are a variety. I've tried them all. Some do more damage than good. But the Conair battery powered hand held is the best. What a difference!
thanks for making this video
Are you planning on making an article or video on Escorial Wool?
Excelent video, thanks
Another fact that wasn’t mentioned is that the name Cashmere is British spelling of the name Kashmir which is a region where actually the wool was span into fabric. Here we don’t call it Cashmere (that would be weird). We call it Pashmina. The British came across this fabric in Kashmir for the first time and hence the name.
Also Kashmir itself is very famous for its shawls and carpets. And there is even a higher quality wool than Cashmere aka Pashmina called Shahtoosh but it is very rare to find now as there is a ban on acquiring it. In Kashmir, the shawls are still made traditionally entirely with hand. And the “original” Cashmere can be very expensive when exported in west.
very interesting. i actually learnt something new. Did not know about Shahtoosh and I am glad I do now. Had thought until now that Vicuna was the king of wools, but it is actually Shahtoosh, although the latter is banned.
@@SpirithunterBOMB Yes Shahtoosh can’t be acquired atleast legally because the mountain goat is endangered. In Kashmir we have a lot of cultural association with Cashmere fabric. Shawls made from it are wedding gifts as well as a mark of respect.
He literally said that the Cashmere comes from Kashmir. He meant region, but pronouncing both the same is easy to infer when it the video says it originates there.
I'm looking for a quality blazer and I have seen some "100% cashmere" jackets. This contradicts the advice given here. What would be your view on these... Are these something I could seriously consider, or something to definitely avoid or even a con?
👍 I ❤️my Sand Copenhagen cashmere coat camel color. And I own 2 Hugo Boss scarfs in 100% cashmere👌
The best cashmere I have, is the one from my grandma... doesn't pill, soft as heaven, the most salmony salmon pink, and apart from minor wear on the sleeves(currently at the tailor) it is the best piece I own.
I love watching Raphael videos especially as 17 year old I want to keep working on my style.
What do you think about pure cashmere knitwear from Suitsupply?
Could you make a video for lining materials
I asked a company with a royal seal about their cashmere and they basically said they don’t share any information about the cashmere. Super fluffy and itchier than wool
thank you sir!!!
Who would dislike this video? It was very informative.
Do a video about Vicuna, espec vs Kashmir in tearms of quality is it so much better or 10-20% like i think
Nothing can take the place of the luxury of true cashmere.
i've got a few questions, first of all. is there a place where i can find shell cordovan loafers for under 400 dollars, and do you need a different type of shoetree for boots then for ordinary dress shoes?
I bought a Johnston’s of Elgin turtle neck and it’s not as soft as my Aritzia pullover... even though the JOE sweater is pure cashmere. Why? Will it soften?
Nice video I ❤️ my cashmere coat 👍🇸🇪
Are Burberry Italian-woven cashmere coat worth buying?
I have a overcoat that prob from the 40's or 50's it says imported cashmere .Its black has a thin collar 3 buttons on the front . the silk lining is coming apart in a couple places and I have been thinking of taking it to a tailor to get it altered if that's possible . Its a little boxy but the shoulders and sleeves fit me well if I could get it taken in a bit . Im thinking this may be a real quality overcoat .Its very warm and soft .No pilling . I never knew cashmere was from goats ? I also didn't know dry cleaning was bad for them either .
I'm new to cashmere but is a cashmere overcoat for 500 dollars worth it. Is it good for everyday use, or should it be just a once in a while dress up coat?
What are some cashmere companies I should be looking at. Reliable quality brands?
i don't own cashmere but i will see to it thanks again
I've been watching your videos for over a year now and it only just occurred to me that your surname means "tailor". Nomen est omen!
thank you for your video! I'm watching while waiting for my cashmere sweater to dry... Bad day today, my cat peed on the sleeve of it while it was drying overnight.. horrible smell!
Hi, I'm a woman, but I find this channel very interesting. How did you get all this knowledge?
Hello Rafael what do you think of the quality of a 10% cashmere 90% wool overcoat
King Geek i got this overcoat for €500.
Would a sports coat made of wool, cashmere, and silk be a quality garment?
I like my burberry novak check scarves and my vicunja scarve
I have to say that cashmere sounds more trouble than it's worth!... Hard or even impossible to find good quality, pills easily (even the good stuff) & goes strangely hard after washing. Yikes!... I think I'll stick to fine merino wool - easy to find, reasonable prices, never pills, & even comes in superfine summer-weight fabrics these days (which is machine-washable!)..... Thanks for this fabulous info - I was thinking of venturing into the unknown world of casmere. Now I will be ultra-cautious! 🙂❤️
Quality concerns notwithstanding, even lower quality cashmere products - such as, I suspect, the jumper I am wearing right now, a 100% cashmere jumper made in Madagascar - can be extremely warm, soft and comfortable to wear.
UncleDumu its not itchy like other wool
Are cashmere blazers and coast susceptible to the moths that can damage the fibers? I did have this problem with one of my cashmere sweaters now I'm super careful. I just thrifted a beautiful pale pink 100% cashmere blazer for $7. I took it to the dry cleaner to make sure I did not bring any moths or their larva home with me.
Where did u buy this all cashmere clothes ?
What about james perse brand?
I saw a 100% cashmere scarve from muji that only recommends dry cleaning, hand wash not recommended. Why is that and what will happen if i hand wash it?
I love this material because it is kind to my bad skin I find lambs wool itchy and scratchy only trouble cashmere is very expensive in England 🙁
how does Cashmere compare to merino wool?
